Session 3 – The Draw

Student Guide

General Draw Considerations

• Speed is a result not a goal.  Remember, slow is smooth and smooth is fast, but some-times, slow is just slow, so train with purpose.

• Maintain muzzle awareness at all times, the muzzle always points at the Threat.

• The elbow and wrist of the Primary hand controls muzzle alignment left to right, this is our Shooting Platform and we must keep it aligned

• Biggest Problems to keep in mind:

o The weapons presentation is presented in steps but performed in one smooth motion.

o The gun moves to the head, not the head to the gun, try to keep your body quiet while the firearm is moving

1) Position 1 – Presentation Push/Pull

a) P1 starts with the firearm in alignment but pulled backward 4 to 6” from the final shooting position depending on your flexibility

b) Sights are aligned, Finger ON the trigger - slack out

c) Fully extend to the final shooting position, body tightening, arms are pushing and pulling, wrists/forearms are tightening

i) Do NOT start crushing the firearm - Keep the Vice Grip the same!

d) Goal is break the shot in the last inch of travel to final shooting position

i) Flash or Combat Sight Picture (Focus - See - Concentrate)

(1) Adjust the amount of concentration on sights as required to meet the standard of accuracy!

(2) More speed, less concentration on sight alignment, if the Threat is very close as an example. More accuracy, more concentration on sight align-ment, if the Threat is far away as an example.

2) Position 2 – The Hockey Stick

a) Shooting Platform (Gun - Wrist - Elbow) is in alignment

b) Primary hand is just about pec muscle level, wrist has BARELY broken the plane of the body

c) Primary hand has a solid Vice Grip

d) Support hand is positioned with index finger under the trigger guard touching the trigger guard AND middle finger of the Primary hand

6) Use good training tools if possible, at Sealed Mindset we use the SIRT Pistol from Next Level Training

General Rules for ALL Courses of Fire (COF)

• All targets are an 8.5x11” sheet of paper on the upper chest of a silhouette or simply taped to the wall

• Insure that you know what is beyond that wall incase you have a NEGLIGENT DIS-CHARGE

• We suggest using a wall that doesn’t have an adjacent room or building behind it

• Distance to target is assumed to be 15 - 21 ft

• Speed is always, and should be for all COFs, very very slow and definitive

• Your accuracy should be very high during ALL of these COFs, no speed is necessary, you can make it your goal to keep all of the shots in as close a grouping as possible, if you’d like. HOWEVER, at Sealed Mindset, if the shot is on the 8.5x11” sheet of paper, that was an “accurate” shot

1) COF #1

a) Student will say the checklist and get into position

b) With sights aligned, slowly engage the trigger to the releasing of the trigger mecha-nism, freeze after the shot, keep the finger to the rear and consciously recognize that your finger stayed in place

c) IF YOU ARE USING A LIVE FIREARM - Fake the reset as the slide did not cycle and therefore the trigger mechanism will not have reset

i) If you have a SIRT Pistol, watch for the laser to be a pinpoint and not move while you pulled the trigger

d) Conduct two more trigger pulls

e) Reset

f ) Assess - Finger OFF of the trigger as the sights are no longer aligned

g) 360 Degree Check

h) IF YOU ARE USING A LIVE FIREARM - Cycle the slide to reset the trigger for your next practice shot

i) Continue to repeat this COF until shooter can consistently keep their finger to the rear following the release of the mechanism

2) COF #2 - SIRT PREFERRED

a) If you do not have a SIRT or a Double Action Only firearm, this COF will be much more challenging as your firearm will not reset after the first trigger pull

i) You should not reach up and cycle the slide between trigger pulls either as this can build a bad neural pathway

ii) Should you have a shooting partner, they could manually cycle the slide for you after each trigger pull, while you hold body position and sight alignment

h) Assess - Finger OFF of the trigger as the sights are no longer aligned

i) 360 Degree Check
