Earlier on this year, you wrote a letter to Santa.

Have a quick think on your own or a chat with your adult about what you can remember about letters.

Can you remember...

What they look like? How they are set out? What sort of information might they include? What might go at the start of the letter? What might go at the end of the letter?

There are many different reasons why someone might write a letter.

Can you think of any?

Perhaps you could have a look at some of the letters you have received through the post, if your adult is happy to share them with you.

Or think about any letters you have seen in the past.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Dear Harry,

My name is Albus Dumbledore and I am the head teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. My amazing school needs you Harry; you are what is missing from Hogwarts!

Firstly, did you know that you are a wizard? Yes, that’s right: a wizard. You are unique and one of a kind. You see Harry; you are now at the beginning of your life as a powerful wizard. That is why you must come to Hogwarts where we will encourage your life-changing talents so they grow and develop.

Furthermore, at Hogwarts, we care about each and every one of our students. We are a family at Hogwarts; a happy family. Every pupil, every teacher, every ghost and even the caretaker agree that Hogwarts is the most precious of families. Come to Hogwarts! Your friends are here waiting for you.

Lastly, at Hogwarts, we have the most eclectic and wonderful teachers. Those teachers, who will take time to get to know you Harry, will encourage and extend your skills and abilities so that you can be the best wizard you can be.

Hogwarts is the only school for you Harry. You are the missing piece of our jigsaw. You won’t ever regret choosing us – and we know we won’t ever regret inviting you.

Yours in hope and magic,

Mr A. Dumbledore

Dear Mr Grills,

I am writing to say thank you to you and your team for the recent trip that I attended with my school. I stayed at the centre from Monday 14th January until Tuesday 15th January. We completed so many different activities ‐ all of which were such fun!

The workshop about the Stone Age in the green yurt was really fantastic. I really liked finding out how they made tools and hunted.  Seeing the bone marrow was really weird and it smelt horrid too.

I especially liked making the fire, then toasting marshmallows and cooking bread on it. I think I will remember the song‐singing and story‐telling around the fire forever.  It was so exciting to be staying in dormitories with all of my school friends. We were all so excited that it took us ages to get to sleep.

I would recommend your centre to anyone who likes having fun and who wants to learn more about the Stone Age.  How did you manage to pack so much fun into a day and half?

I would love to visit again one day.

Yours sincerely,

Avril Venture (Year 3 pupil)

In the video you watched last session, you should have noticed how a letter is normally set out and the types of things they would normally include.

Can you remember any of the features a letter would normally include?

Record your ideas on paper before you look at the next page.

TASK: Print the 'Letter Example' document.Just like we have done before in school, read this letter, then begin to find and label as many features as you can. Use the list below to help you find them all. We have put it in order so the ideas at the top should be easier to find. When you annotate each feature, you could label them using a ruler to draw lines or you could use different coloured pencils to underline (but don't forget to make a key if you do this).

Without looking, how many features of a letter can you remember?

SHORT WRITING TASK

Today, you are going to write a short, informal letter to someone you know. (It could be a family member, a friend, a neighbour: anyone you like!)

We call it an informal letter because you will be writing in a friendly to someone you already know quite well. The words we write will be similar to those we would use in a relaxed face-to-face conversation.

Watch this video:

You may be asked to sign in, so ask your parents to do this if you need to. As you watch it, the teacher will talk you through how to write your letter. He will encourage you to pause the

video at different points so you can write down your own ideas.

You will need to have your paper and pencil ready before you start watching. You may wish to use the Letter Template on our school website or a special piece of writing paper (if you have some). You may also wish to refer to the Success Criteria on

the next page to help you.

Finished?

Read over your letter to check it makes sense. Correct any mistakes and make sure you have included everything you wanted to say.Add extras, such as drawings and photographs, to make the letter extra special.

Speak to your grown up about posting your letter. Perhaps you could deliver it by hand or put it in an addressed-envelope and actually post your letter. Hopefully, you'll get a reply!
