What are we attempting to understand?

Can utilities deploy software in an effort to offset the

investment in traditional assets?

vsDigital Asset Traditional Asset

8 www.esbnetworks.ie

What are we attempting to understand?

• 70 years of optimisation

• 300% increase in instantaneous demand

• Localised – we need sensors and vision

• Transform sensor data into knowledge

• Share this with all actors to:• Avoid congestion

• Control voltage

• Advise on frequency

• Procure services

• Avoid traditional investment

Servo – What is it?

Implementation of Common Information

Model in ESB Networks

Project SERVO - System-wide Energy

Resource and Voltage Optimisation platform

11 www.esbnetworks.ie

What is it?

• Implementation of IEC Standard Common Information Model

• Captures all Distribution assets and data in single model

• Enables many use cases

• Asset Management – Load visualisation, Asset reporting

• Operations – Increased visibility of LV

• Capacity optimisation – enables DSU participation, investment offset

• System Services - voltage, frequency control

Overcoming barriers

• Benefits to the business need to be demonstrated

• Briefings, presentations across business to inform

• Not replacing existing systems but enhancing them using new

technology and software

• Give examples of what can be achieved

Lessons learned along the way…….

• In a 100% RES environment ICT infrastructures

will be required to be Fast, Reliable, and Secure:

• In the collection of

• Large amounts of measurements from a huge number of sensors

and devices

• In the transmission of

• Commands for voltage and frequency stability management.

SCALABLE ICT FOR ENERGY SYSTEMS WITH 100% RES

• Monitored field measurements are based on publish / subscribe

model.

-All collected data is based on a Common Information Model.

• Transmission of Control Commands are based on Policy-Based

Management.

- Grid operators can define their own policies for monitoring & control of

the network, at the highest level.

-Policy as set forth by the operator at the highest level.

• Decisions can be made at the edge of the power network.

- Leading to autonomous and instant policy decisions.

VISION FOR ICT

6/14/2017

Field Measurements are mainly based on a Pull-Push Client / Server

model.

TODAY

Sensors and devices

pull/push their data into

central control units.

Sensors and similar devices

• Problem

- There is high latency in the request–response messaging pattern for

gathering measurement data.

- Measurands are selected at deployment time

- Today, the data from all measurands are sent to the control units whether

they are needed or not.

- Many different proprietary data solutions and silos.

• Solution

- Low latency for getting measurement data to its intended destination.

- Applications can subscribe to just the measurands they need.

- Open data solution.

- Can apply Common Information Model (CIM) to data gathering and data

storage.

FIELD MEASUREMENTS AND MONITORING

6/14/2017

• Policy-Based Management

-A system based on policy rules which are composed of a set of conditions, a

corresponding set of actions and an execution environment.

• Real-Time Control

-Autonomous Policy based management system executing at the edge of the

network.

• Security

-Data privacy and integrity

COMMANDS FOR VOLTAGE AND FREQUENCY

MANAGEMENT

6/14/2017

• 5G Networks provide the perfect platform for the future communications

network, thanks to

- Ultra-low latency (speed)

- Excellent support for huge number of devices (Narrowband-IoT)

- Built-in security and reliability

- 5G Breakout Gateway to de-centralize decisions to the edge of the mobile

and power networks. See next slides.
