NOTES FROM DENNIS

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS? A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a

whisper of it. Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when

deep sleep falls on men, fear and trembling seized me and

made all my bones shake. A spirit glided past my face, and

the hair on my body stood on end. It stopped, but I could not

tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a

hushed voice Job 4:12-16.

In this passage from the book of Job, Eliphaz (one of Job’s

friends) saw a Ghost (a spirit). It glided past his face and

scared him. It made his hair stand on end and it stopped but he

couldn’t quite tell what is was. The ghost then spoke to

Eliphaz in a hushed voice. That pretty well sums up most

ghost sightings. Of course, there are often more embellish-

ments such as the room turned icy cold or certain items moved

by themselves, etc. I sure heard my share of ghost stories

growing up because my father was a firm believer in ghosts.

He would go into great detail about the experiences he had

with ghosts. Most of the stories involved someone he knew in

the past who was now dead. Those experiences were generally continued on next page

In Our Thoughts And Prayers continued from front page

very frightening to him and to us as well. Except for my

mother because she didn’t believe in ghosts. On the sly she

would tell us that we had to realize that my father had those

ghost experiences while he was intoxicated. My father was

an alcoholic and he saw spirits (ghosts) while he was under

the influence of spirits (alcohol).

I don’t believe in ghosts either. I certainly believe in a

spiritual realm. I don’t believe dead people are walking

around haunting. I do believe that some have been kind to

angels but they didn’t know they were angels (Hebrews

13:1). They were just being kind to another person, they

thought. But they didn’t realize that “person” was actually

an angel. Even Satan’s servants (demons??) can

masquerade as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians

11:15). If these servants are his demons, to us they would

appear as servant of righteousness by deceiving us. So we

would not even see them as demons but servants of right-

eousness. Fortunately, we can know they are deceivers

because of their message. In fact, evil spirits cannot harm

us by overpowering us “because the one who is in you is

greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4b).

Certainly, the devil can influence us and tempt us and

deceive us and that would harm us but we would have to

give in to that temptation. And we don’t want to minimize

that influence at all. Satan is powerful in that way but Jesus

is much more powerful.

What about Eliphaz? He was lying! He did not see a

ghost and it did not speak to him. He was trying to win an

argument with Job and his argument was weak and he used

the age old trick of making up an experience to prove his

point. It is very difficult for us to tell when someone like

Eliphaz is lying but it is very easy for God. God said to

Eliphaz, “I am angry with you and your two friends,

because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my

servant Job has.” (Job 42:7b).

So, the next time you hear a good ghost story sitting

around the campfire, laugh and enjoy it but keep it in fiction

section where it belongs.

Lord our Lord, your name is the most wonderful in

all the earth! It brings you praise everywhere in

heaven. From the mouths of children and babies come

songs of praise to you. They sing of your power to

silence your enemies who were seeking revenge. I look

at the heavens you made with your hands. I see the

moon and the stars you created. And I wonder, “Why

are people so important to you? Why do you even think

about them? Why do you care so much about

humans? Why do you even notice them?”

But you made them almost like gods and crowned

them with glory and honor. You put them in charge of

everything you made. You put everything under their

control. People rule over the sheep and cattle and all the

wild animals. They rule over the birds in the sky and

the fish that swim in the sea.

Lord our Lord, your name is the most wonderful

name in all the earth! Psalm 8:1-9.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CLASS

The elders are considering having a class for young

married couples and young singles and need your

input. First, would you be interested in having a

class? Second, when would you want the class to

meet? Some suggestions might be during the Sun-

day morning Bible class time (9:45 a.m.) or during

the Noon class. Let Jim Ball know if you have a

preference.
