Good Morning North Central Ohio! How are you today?Warmer winds are blowing and it is finally staying warmer. I can now get my hands dirty in the garden. I have already decided on the varieties of tomatoes I want this year. Juan and I are excited to be able to sit on the back yard swing and watch the dogs play.

My hope is to be able to sit in the garden with my hands covered in dirt, planting vegetables and flowers alike. It is not uncommon at my house to see tomato plants where there are normally flowers, because tomatoes are more tasty to eat.

I have also been in a fight to save some of my fruit trees and grapes and have decided to use a fungicide to treat them. I hope it works becuase for the last two years my grapes have died on the vine. I love to be in the garden. I had to stay away from it for the last couple of years because I had to get my knees replaced. Not a fun thing to do. Will have to learn how to garden without being able to kneel down - time to get creative :o)

If you have any tips or ideas, please let me know.

Usually I write my articles with information for the public so they may have more knowledge about their pets and to answer some common questions we are asked in the veterinary world. The subject of ticks though is serious for both humans and their furry dog companions. With the warm winters, we have been having above normal temperatures causing the tick population to become an epidemic.

A 2017 study shows that Lyme disease this year will escalate by 360% in humans. Lyme disease is transmitted by the black legged tick and is the most common of all tick born diseases. The State of Ohio, until 2013 averaged a reported 54 cases of Lyme disease annually. In 2014, reports of Lyme disease shot up to

119 reported cases according to the Ohio Department of Health. The numbers might not seem that alarming to you, but consider our neighboring state of Pennsylvania, where the black spotted tick has migrated to us from. Pennsylvania has an annual report of nearly 5000 cases of Lyme disease a year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The first symptom to look for if you have been bitten by a tick is the tell-tale bull’s eye rash that will develop at the site of the bite between 2-32 days afterward. The rash is typically 2 to 3 inches across. Only 40% of people bitten will get the rash though. If you start to have a fever, rash, joint aches or chills you should go see your medical professional and let them know that you have been bitten by a tick. For dogs, you will notice symptoms of lack of appetite, depression, joint pain and lameness in the leg where the tick may have attached itself. The dog may also become lethargic and anemic and may have substantial blood loss that could result in death if there is an infestation of ticks feeding on the dog.

There are 3 types of ticks found most common in Ohio, American Dog Tick, Blacklegged Tick or Deer Tick and the Lone Star Tick. The Brown Dog Tick although uncommon, is

the only tick that lives in homes and in kennels with dogs. Ticks have a life cycle that includes the egg and three stages. The stages include: larvae, nymph and adult

ticks. All 3 stages of ticks feed off the blood of mammals. If you are unable to identify the type of tick you have found, you can take it to your local health department and they will identify it for you. Just put it in a small hard container with a lid and a few blades of grass inside.

Tick bite prevention for us is following a few simple measures. Be careful in wooded areas tall grassy areas and around road edges. There are tick repellents available over the counter and their directions should be followed very closely. For your dog, there are many safe products available from your veterinarian. Never apply a tick preventative that is made for dogs to a cat because you can kill them. The chemicals used in dog tick preventative are toxic to cats. It should be written all over the label to not use on a cat. This is very very serious.

Tick Removal Here are steps to remember: Do NOT use a hot match this could cause the tick to burst or burn you

Do NOT apply any liquids to “stimulate” the tick to detach. This actually could cause the increase in risk of disease transmission.

Use tweezers to grab an embedded tick body as close to your skin as possible and by the tick’s mouth parts. Using a steady pressure pull straight out. Do not jerk it out or twist it around. You want to try to get the mouth parts out with the whole tick body but if you don’t do not fish around in the wound for those pieces. This may lead to a secondary bacterial infection. Your body will try to push these parts out like it would a splinter. I know for years we were told you had to get this part out or you would get sick but it is an old wives tale. (My husband is shaking his head at me as I write this and I’ve shown him the

studies. He still finds it hard to believe our not supposed to try to get the “head” out. My husband hunts and fishes and we live in the country so the knowledge of ticks is something he grew up with.)

After removing the tick proper disinfection of the bite site is very important to prevent any secondary bacterial infection. You should treat the area with a topical antibiotic and wash and scrub your hands and tweezers with disinfectant.

Save the tick in case you come down with any symptoms and your healthcare professional might want to see it or have it tested.

I know this article has a lot of information but these nasty, blood sucking little buggers are here. They are already on our pets and our families and it’s disgusting. Let’s arm ourselves with knowledge so they can’t make us sick or harm us or even worse.

Our Spotlight for this issue of NCO Events Magazine is a hidden gem in our own backyard. One of the main Christian attractions in the United States is located right here in Mansfield.

BibleWalk first opened its doors on August 15, 1987. The original museum consisted of nineteen life-size dioramas (a three-dimensional full-size model), utilizing museum quality fiberglass figures. The first 7 scenes were from the Old Testament and the remaining 12 scenes were from the New Testament. 30 years have quickly passed and BibleWalk has grown tremendously. Right now they offer five tours which consist of seventy-eight scenes featuring over three hundred life-size wax figures. In addition to the five tours,

(soon to be 6, they are currently working on a tour called The Kingdom of God), each with an accompanying non-denominational audiovisual presentation. they also have eight one-of-a-kind exhibits plus a Dinner Theater, “Dinner With Grace.”

Have you ever been there? Most of the local people I have talked to didn’t even realize that Biblewalk was that close to them. This is a major Christian attraction across the United States.

This is what Roadside America wrote about BibleWalk - “Ohio’s Only Life-Size Wax Museum” is the impressive centerpiece of this earnest attraction. It has over 300 wax figures in 70 religious scenes, and it was all built by the congregants of the adjacent nondenominational Diamond Hill Cathedral. - See more at: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2187#sthash.NtiqrikR.dpuf

were, stepping back through time to look into the Bible. This year, BibleWalk is celebrating 30 Years and would like to make a special offer to our local residents. BibleWalk is a half-mile north of US 30 off of 545. Also displayed are collections of rare Bibles, American votive folk art and wood carvings and three animated scenes. Walk of the Parables features large-scale paintings representing Christ’s parables.

Rooting : is the process to allowing users of smart phones, tables and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to obtain privileged control. As Android uses the Linux Kernel, rooting an Android device gives similar access to administrative (superuser) permissions as on Linux or any other Unix-like operating system.

Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices. Thus, rooting gives the ability (or permission) to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized applications (“apps”) that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device’s operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.

Root access is sometimes compared to Jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system. However, these are different concepts: Jailbreaking is the bypass of several types of Apple prohibitions for the end user, including modifying the operating system (enforced by a “locked bootloader”), installing non-officially approved applications via sideloading, and granting the user elevated administration-level privileges (rooting). Only a minority of Android devices lock their bootloaders, and many vendors such as HTC, Sony, Asus and Google explicitly provide the ability to unlock devices, and even replace the operating system entirely. Similarly, the ability to sideload applications is typically permissible on Android devices without root permissions. Thus, it is primarily the third aspect of iOS jailbreaking (giving users administrative privileges) that most directly correlates to Android rooting.

Advantages of rooting include the possibility for complete control over the look and feel of the device. As a superuser has access to the device’s system files, all aspects of the operating system can be customized with the only real limitation being the level of coding expertise. 1. Check the selling prices of other homes in your areaDo a quick search of actual multiple listing service, or MLS, listings in your area on a number of websites, including the National Association of Realtors.

2. Find out what your total monthly housing cost would be, Include taxes and insurance in your cost. In some areas, what you’ll pay for your taxes and insurance escrow can almost double your mortgage payment. To get an idea of what insurance will cost you, pick a property in the area where you want to live and make a call to an insurance agent for an estimate.

3. Find out how much you’ll likely pay in closing costs. The upfront cost of settling on your home shouldn’t be overlooked. Closing costs include origination fees charged by the lender, title and settlement fees, taxes and prepaid items like homeowners insurance or homeowners association fees. Check out Bankrate.com’s annual closing cost survey to see what closing costs average in your state.

4. Look at your budget and how a house fits into it.Fannie Mae recommends that buyers spend no more than 28 percent of their income on housing. Push past 30 percent and you risk becoming house-poor.

5. Find lenders and get preapproved. Getting preapproved for a mortgage helps you bargain from a position of strength when you are house hunting. The institution where you bank and a local credit union are good places to start your search.

Local business holds charitable event to help Shriner’s childrenBabies are a celebration, and what better way to celebrate than having your first baby born on the Fourth of July. That is exactly how proud parents Aaron and Stephanie Levandusky felt four years ago when Luke was born on Independence Day. During the birthing process, Luke’s right arm was broken, and within a few hours he was transported to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

Once at Rainbow’s, the doctor said she believed something else was wrong with Luke. Along with the broken arm, they found he had craniotabes (soft skull) and a fracture in his lower right arm. These three issues prompted her to take additional x-rays due to her concern of Luke having Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or brittle bone disease.

The next day the doctor shared her findings. Stephanie and Aaron were shocked to hear that Luke’s x-rays came back “extremely abnormal.” All four limbs showed bowing, or curving, due to his bones being weak. They also discovered additional fractures throughout both legs, and had to cast the right leg.

The family was soon sent home with a fragile baby that they did not really know how to care for. The next four months were filled with confusion and heartache. Luke’s bones continued to break, even with minor manipulation. The doctor broke his femur while circumcising him, Stephanie broke both of his tibias while putting on his shoes. It continued like this until two years ago when a social worker told the family about Shriners Hospitals for Children where they could seek help. The hospital that could help Luke was in Montreal, Canada. The Al Koran Shriners

paid for the family’s transportation, food and lodging during the trips to Montreal. Luke was put on a medicine that made his bones much stronger, while waiting for future surgeries, and he was not breaking as many.

“Thanks to Al Koran Shriners and Shriners Hospital for Children, Luke has received two surgeries in the past two years in Montreal. These amazing procedures put metal rods in his femurs and tibias, which help support his weight and prevent Luke’s bones from breaking. We all hope Luke will soon be out of the wheelchair and walking on his own,” said Stephanie. Luke’s dad, Aaron, shares, “Luke is going on five years old now. He is a very happy and active boy, does great in school and has many friends. He’s even going to play T-Ball this summer!”

If you know of any child who may need help, please refer the family to the Al Koran Shriners. Shriners is a free hospital for families with children needing medical help, but the hospital survives on donations alone. Please help support the Al Koran Shriners on May 6th at a Kentucky Derby Cruise-In Car show. All are welcome and spectators are free. The event will take place at Next Level Auto Detailing at 4001 Towpath Rd. (at Broadview Rd.), Broadview Hts. from 4:00-7:30PM. Come out and meet Super Hero Luke and his family. There will be real horses at the event, and the Derby will be televised live where you can bet on your favorite contender. There will be prizes for the best hat and bowtie, music, food, 50/50, door prizes and more. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Al Koran Shriners and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For more information, and to pre-register, please call Karen at (216) 310-5481 or Shawn at 440/476-9282.
