Chaplains Corner Dear Brother Knights, The month of May is traditionally the month that is set aside to honour and celebrate our beloved Mother Mary. Over the centuries, the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary has been a very strong Catholic Tradition that

truly emphasizes God’s great love for humanity and His desire to redeem it through Jesus Christ and with the intercession of one of our own. God chose Mary from amongst all women to be the mother of Christ and Mary truly rose to that beautiful responsibility by a life lived in complete service to God and a beautiful model for all of us. There is an old French hymn which translates: “This is the month of Mary and this is the most beautiful of all months.” There is some truth to that as we come to celebrate our own hope and redemption through Mary’s complete yes to God. May is also the month when we celebrate Mothers Day and a wonderful opportunity to high-light the wonderful women in our lives who have loved us, guide us, nourish us, accepted us and most of all have been there for us. May this Mothers Day

{May 10th} be a true moment of celebration and grati-tude to our beloved mothers, both living and those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. For those who no longer have their mothers with them here on Earth, just a reminder of a special memorial service @ Ste-Anne’s Cemetery @ 2:00 p.m. on Mothers Day to commemorate their presence and their memories in our lives. And finally, we end the month of May on a high note by celebrating the Feast of Pentecost on the last day of the month {May 31st}. Pentecost is the last day of the Easter Season and thus the beginning of the Season of Ordinary Time. Pentecost is also the celebration of the birth of the Church, where we become empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of Christ to the world by our words and our actions. Let us continue to pray that we may be worthy witnesses both inside the council and in our parish and in our families.

In Christ,

Fr. Robert G. Couture, Chaplain

District Deputy’s Message Brother Knights May is the month when we hold the elections of officers of our Council. The men that we elect are the leaders of the Council, and they oversee the operations and projects that will take

place during the coming fraternal year. Only members in good standing as Third Degree Knights are eligible to be elected to the Executive Board. Each officer is elected for a one year term. There are some exceptions. the Council's Chaplain is selected by the Grand Knight, the Deputy Grand Knight, and the Trustees subject to the approval of the diocesan bishop. The Trustee is elected for 3 years. The Financial Secretary is appointed by the Grand Knight; as is the Lecturer, who is responsible for the

education and good will of the Council. The Grand Knight and the Deputy Grand Knight also appoint the committee chairs who will lead their com-mittees in the important work of the Council. It is mainly through these committees that the Council will achieve its goals.. I extend my good wishes for a successful new frater-nal year to the new executive board. To all of our ladies, I wish you a very happy Mothers Day. Keith Campbell, District Deputy District 76

Grand Knight’s Message Basking in the rays of Easter’s Renewal….… Dear Brother Knights…

Hopefully, the feeling of the promise of the Easter victory which we have celebrated in faith but a few shorts weeks ago still remains in a personal way with all. Feelings of rebirth and renewal should encourage us as we adapt to the new season and the ever-changing landscape of our lives. Likewise, many ‘life giving’ events have taken place since you were reading our last bulletin. Permit me to recap a few as we anticipate forthcoming club functions and activities. Our second Annual Easter Coloring Contest saw great par-ticipation with the involvement from Jr. K. to Grade six and beyond in four local schools as well as the community at large with entries that were made available from the council and Ste. Anne Church. Of the close to 2,000 sheets dis-seminated, 249 fine entries were submitted. Thank you, again this year, to the St. Anne Youth Group leaders for selecting the winners. Thank you as well, to the teaching staff at St. Pius, St. Peter’s, Ste-Marguerite and St-Antoine Schools for promoting participation. The annual Good Friday Fish Fry went over the gunnels with about 700 meals served. Thanks to all for the skill in the kitchen and for ample crew on board. Being involved with this level of volunteerism and witnessing community support for this event is most encouraging. Indeed, our es-tablishment is quite a community anchor. On Saturday April 25th, Chancellor Len Dawe and I had the opportunity to attend, on behalf of Council 4375, a Mass and meeting of the Diocesan West Association Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Church in LaSalle. Fittingly, the morning began with a Mass cele-brated by Bishop Eugene Larocque with words of thanks and encouragement for the varied works of the Knights. A presentation and video by the Windsor Police highlighted

the scope of this summer’s Special Olympics which are tak-ing place at the WFCU Arena and at sites throughout Win-dsor as about 800 athletes may visit the city to compete. Fourth Degree Knights are encouraged to take part in the opening ceremonies and any knight is able to assist in a ful-filling way as 1,000 volunteers are being sought. You’ll hear more about this province-wide event in our own back-yard. It is encouraging to note that following the term of Gord Edwards as a most capable president of the Diocesan West Association that the post was filled by Hon. Justice Robert ‘Bob’ Daudlin who was a Member of Parliament for the riding of Kent-Essex from 1974 to 1984, after which he was called to the bench as a judge. Bob now resides in the Til-bury area where he is able to practice his love of sailing. (I had heard that at one time he had joined former Prime Min-ister Pierre E.Trudeau while sailing on the St. Lawrence). It is gratifying that someone of Bob’s stature would seek this level on involvement in the K. of C. Furthermore, Bob hails as a former Tecumsehite. On Sunday, April 19th my wife Donna and I joined some other brother knights from our council, Mario Fontanin, Len Dawe, Richard Penn and Carl Baillar-geon at a Mass and Dinner at the Fogolar Furlan Club to honour our past chaplain Fr. Joseph Bagatto on his fifty-years in the priesthood. As a longtime member of the Fogo-lar Furlan, Bro. Mario was a key organizer of this fine event. Our gesture as a council was the compiling of a 14 minute picture-video with some historic photos of Fr. Bagatto’s first mass at St. Angela’s in Windsor and fol-lowed by a mass in his hometown in Italy. Special thanks to his brother Frank and wife Gail Bagatto for supplying some photos. A tip of the ‘Alpini Cap’ to our new member Bro. Dennis Marentette for creating the video. Perhaps we can show the video as a prelude at a forthcoming General Meet-ing. On this same Sunday, our council hosted a Third Degree Exemplification which saw 39 men receive their Third De-gree. A sincere welcome to the eight brothers from our council who received their Third, some of whom were cap-

Due to the fact that the cost of mailing our news letter due to its size has become quite expensive, we now find that we are only able to hand deliver them to members living in the Tecumseh, St. Clair Beach & Ban-well Rd. areas. We also leave a certain number of bulletins at St. Anne’s Church usually on the 1st weekend of the month as well as a number of them at the Council Hall on Lesperance Rd. The bulletin may be obtained by going on the internet at our web page, the address of which is listed above. Inquiries have been made as to whether anyone can have the bulletin sent to them on-line. If anyone wished to have the Council bulletin sent to them by e-mail each month, simply send your e-mail address to the following address: [email protected] In the subject heading state “Bulletin request”.

I would like to wish all the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers and godmothers a Very Happy Mothers Day. On April 2 we presented a cheque to Kim Laports for the M.S. Society. Kim has M.S. and

gave a very interesting talk about her life with M.S that was at times humorous but very inspiring. A group of ladies from our TLC collected pledges and walked for M.S. on April 19. Way to go! The Good Friday Fish Fry was a huge success. 705 dinners were served. A HUGE thank you to all involved preparing on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. A few of us who are usually there were not able to help because of illness, but because of the great job of organizing this event year after year by Lorraine Chevalier, everyone knew their jobs and it ran smoothly. On Wed. April 22, thirty ladies attended the Belle River Social night. Congratulations to Cathy Berthiaume for representing our council as our "Tacky Tourist". Many of our ladies went home with one or more raffle prizes. All in all a fun night. There will be a sign up sheet at our May meeting for the River Canard "Country Idol" fun night. We need some singers for this event. Anyone interested??

We still need more recipes for our Cookbook. We are enclosing a form with this bulletin on page 6 but if you need more ask me or Diane Gerard. Our Social Committee has been working very hard to make the Pasta Fundraiser a big success. CONG-TRATULATIONS to Bev Hutnik and Linda Powers and their Social Committee for all their hard work for the successful Pasta Fundraiser on April 26. Thank you to all who donated door prizes, money and flowers. Thank you to all who helped serve, clean tables and wash dishes. Thanks also to Chef Mike and his sidekick Ivan for the delicious pasta. Our dear friend and member Gail Emery has moved to Maisonville Rest Home on Drouillard Rd re-cently. If you happen to go by that way, please drop in to say HI. Gail has gone through a lot of changes recently since Dennis passed away and needs our friendship. Please also keep Rosie Hennin in your prayers as she recovers from a recent stroke and Betty Sylvestre and she continues her recovery. Betty Russette won the 50/50 draw and Mary Lou St. Louis was our Member of the Month. See you at our next meeting Thursday May 7. God Bless, Maureen

Thank you to all who came out to support the ‘TLC Family Pasta Event’ a big “thank you” the many who bought tickets, donated money and raffle prize, this was greatly appreciated. The Social Committee who put a lot of work and effort into this function to make it success “Thank you”. Thank you to Mike Wilder and Ivan Del Bianco for do-ing a great job as usual in the kitchen. To our many volunteers who sold tickets, cleaned up, did dishes, the bar, 50/50, served pasta & salad, cutting & serving the cake, our bakers Lorraine, Jan, Maureen and Jessica for the cookies, Jim Cushman for the tickets, it takes many working together to make a success. Thank you! Looking forward to working together at our next event! Social Committee, Bev & Linda

tured in a photo to be published elsewhere in this bul-letin. As both brothers Neil Vaseleniuck and Jim Cushman were in Ottawa, thanks to the others who assisted such as John Rocheleau, Ivan Del Bianco, Marcel Papineau, Frank Gresch, Frank Renaud AND OTHERS. A fine steak dinner under the direction of Bro. Mike Wilder, was served to about 110 who re-mained to ‘celebrate’ with the degree recipients. Brothers…. We are at the threshold of a very impor-tant time in our fraternal year as we prepare for the forthcoming Election of Officers to take place at the General Meeting on Wednesday, June 11th, 2009. The Election Meeting will be preceded by a $5.00 chicken and pasta dinner. If there ever was a meeting to attend, then this would be it…as your presence exudes both interest and encouragement for those seeking office. As G.K., I am completing my second year and am honoured to have had ‘my kick at the can’. I believe this position is one worth experiencing and the posi-tion is open to any Third Degree member in good standing. From this vantage point on the executive, it allows one to see the part of the iceberg that lies be-low the surface and to absorb the many ways in which our council and the membership live out our mandate as knights. It is rewarding to witness the contribution of so many while at the same time dwelling on what could be accomplished with a ‘hands on’ approach be the entire membership of 510! It is with a thankful appreciation of a job well done that we accept the resignation of our Deputy Grand Knight of 3 years Neil Veselniuck who is stepping back for personal reasons at this time in his life. Neil was the protagonist in the establishment of our auto-matic dialing-message system which is the envy of other councils. Neil, we still look forward to seeing you at council functions in the future. Figuratively, from all your friends on the executive… we offer a collectively toast and a ‘Cheer’ to you in your current endevours and perhaps someday you will rejoin us. (Neil is the proprietor of Cheers to You winemaking). Neil is a fine example that as a novice new knight he joined the executive as well as became a member

promptly of the Fourth Degree. Elsewhere in this bulletin and as we look forward with optimism to the works of our council, you will find the results of the Nominating Committee which was comprised of P.G.K.s. If you are sought out to run for a position, please give the request the consid-eration it deserves. We cannot function as is in-tended of a valid council without a full and cohesive executive. On Mothers’ Day weekend May 9th and 10th, we will be seeking assistance to offer the ‘Life Roses’ to all churchgoers at the Saturday evening and at all masses on Sunday at Ste. Anne Church. To volunteer, con-tact Bro, Mike Sales, our pro-life chairperson. Last year’s Rose Sunday proceeds were donated locally to Birthright and Right-to-Life. Incidentally, Supreme has instituted a mandatory levy where three dollars from every member will be sought to assist with the ‘Culture of Life’ endevours in Ontario. A Mothers’ Day Hot Breakfast, open to all members and parish-ioners, will take place at our hall and will be served from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On the 16th, 17th and 18th of May, Bro. Jim Cushman as well as myself and wife Donna will be attending the state convention at the Doubletree Hotel in TO. It is invigorating to witness the commitment of other councils and individuals in the Knights. I’m often kidded by my wife that the pledge at the time of the Installation of Officers was to keep the K. of C. foremost in your mind at all times. In like fash-ion you are asked to keep the Election of Officers Dinner Meeting of June 10th in mind as well as the Awards Night on May 30th 2009. We’ve had a fine response from neighbouring councils and are hoping for a sold-out evening. Get your hands on some tick-ets now… Vivat Jesus Jerry J. Marcotte. G.K.

Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. 'Did you see the paper?' asked Gallagher. 'They say I died!!' 'Yes, I saw it!' replied Finney. 'Where are ye callin' from?'

An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut . The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, 'Sir, have you been drinking?' 'Just water,' says the priest. The trooper says, 'Then why do I smell wine?' The priest looks at the bottle and says, 'Good Lord! He's done it again!'

TO ALL THE GREAT MUMS I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. "Why?" my daughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground and you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably has germs" I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Mummy, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart." I was thinking quickly. "All mums know this stuff. It's on the Mummy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mummy." We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "OH... I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy." "Exactly," I replied back with a big smile on my face.

Tears of a Woman A little boy asks his mother “Why do you cry?” “Because I am a woman”, she answers. “I don’t understand”, he says. His mother hugs him and says, “And you never will.” Later the little boy asks his father, “Why does mommy cry?” “All women cry for no reason”, is all that his father could answer him. When he became an adult he asked God, “God, why do women cry so easily?” “When I created woman, she needed to be special. I created her shoulders strong enough to bear the weight of the world, and soft enough to be comfortable. I gave her strength to give life, the kind that accepts the rejection that often comes from chil-dren. I gave her the strength to allow her to go on when everybody else gives up. The kind that takes care of her family, despite illness and fatigue. I gave her the sensitivity to love her children unconditionally, even when they have hurt her deeply. I gave her the strength to endure her husband in his faults, and to stay at his side without weakening. And finally I gave her tears to shed whenever she needs them to be shed. You see my son, the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears nor is it in her face or in the way she does her hair. The beauty of a woman resides in her eyes. It is the door to her heart; the door where Love resides. And it is often through her tears that you see her heart go by.

Well it is nice to be home even though the warmth of Florida was a welcome refuge from the winter snow and cold. It is nice to be with family and friends once again and get back into a routine. I know that sounds crazy but when you are happy with life as it is, that is an easy statement to make. I was searching around and found an interesting article out of Quebec about a couple’s lawsuit against Montreal Children’s Hospital. In November 2007 a female baby, Phebe, was born at LaSalle Hospital to the couple after a difficult delivery. She was transferred to Montreal Children’s Hospital and put on life support and the parents were told she had little chance for survival and would be deaf and blind. It was suggested that she be taken off respiratory support and hydration. Effectively smother her and dehydrate her to bring on death. Lo and behold when respiratory support was removed it was found Phebe could breathe unassisted. At that point the hospital Ethics Committee allegedly reversed the parent’s decision to withhold fluids and food from Phebe and the lawsuit was launched against the committee. It states the Ethics Committee violated Quebec law and that only the court should be allowed to overrule the parent’s decision. After 2½ months in hospital Phebe was alive and neither deaf nor blind and was released to her parents. She is now 18 months old and even smiles at her parents. She has significant disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, which require constant care but is none the less alive. Had God chosen some other outcome it would have taken place. The reason this article caught my attention is because my wife Shelley has a cousin who started life in a similar manner. The doctors told his parents there was little chance of him living to see his 2nd birthday. He too had Cerebral Palsy and many other health issues. Just to show how the medical field, while sometimes wanting to play God, can be wrong, we are going to London the end of this month to celebrate his 60th birth-day!! 58 more years than he was “supposed” to have I have been around this man many times in the 40 years I’ve known Shelley and he is a great example why nobody has the right to attempt to play God. He enjoys being around people and is quite a prankster. He is confined to a wheelchair but gets around very well and has over the years used many methods for communi-cating. He lives in an assisted living facility and has been known to enjoy a beer or two when socializing. An outsider may look at him and see him as a burden. He doesn’t seem to see his life as a burden on himself. As I’ve said before, in my opinion, sometimes it seems the advocates of euthanasia look too hard at the “burden” side of things and refer to it as “suffering”. They can’t fathom that the life they so strongly want to take away may be that of a potentially happy person. I think too often they are really advocating for the peo-ple who may be “burdened” with the care of the ill or disabled person. That to me is just wrong. Of course if laws pass to allow euthanasia then we will never know who is really being advocated for will we? I just received a letter from Alex Schadenburg the Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coali-tion advising everyone that MP Francine Lalonde of Quebec gave notice on February 11, 2009 that she will again be introducing her Private Members Bill to legalize assisted suicide. There is a deep concern that with the cultural trend today this bill could create a very difficult debate. Anyone with any concern on this subject is asked to contact their MP to voice their opinion. I personally fear the possible implications that this bill could hold. Fraternally yours in Christ, Mike Sales

Never a Better Time to Call Here is the one thing we all have to remember as we navigate these very difficult economic waters: Our view of the financial services industry does not change our need for financial products. Nothing that has happened on Wall Street impacts the amount of money you will need when you retire; or how much life insurance you need to protect your family; or whether a long-term care product has a place in your life. Regardless of whether or not you feel confi-dent in the nation’s stock brokerage or investment firms, remember that your family’s needs have not changed! If anything, your needs have increased. I worry that too many of us are frozen with uncertainty. We are aware of the crisis and aware of the ongoing need to plan and protect, but we are still waiting it out and hunkering down.

The economic crisis does not change our need for financial products By now, you likely know that Knights of Columbus Insurance is doing fine. We still guaran-tee our retirement product interest rates; we still sell quality whole life insurance that has paid a dividend every year (including 2009); and we still have never raised premiums on our long-term care product. We also still have more than 1,400 full-time, professionally trained repre-sentatives willing to offer you and your family the benefit of their wisdom. You are the prior-ity here. Our only clients are members and their families. So don’t be afraid. If you think there is no one you can trust, think again. If you think things just keep going from bad to worse, we can help you. All it takes is one phone call and a con-versation about what steps you can take to protect yourself and our family. There has never been a more critical time to make that call. We can help.
