Dr. Alan Shanks, Professor of Marine Biology at OIMB, will give a presentation on ocean dynamics and how oceans influence our environment and related habitats. The best way to give you a feel for this topic is to read what he says about it in his own words: “Biological Oceanography deals with the interplay between ocean movement and how that movement affects the biology of marine life. Much of my work seems to be at the interface between physical and biology oceanography. I am strongly driven by my curiosity. Early in my career, I discovered that if I was observant and followed my curiosity, I could make novel discoveries. Throughout my career, I have tried to pay attention to my observations and serendipity and to actively follow these leads. When training students (undergraduate or graduate), one of my primary goals is to persuade them to follow their curiosity as this leads to novel and creative discoveries (and besides it is fun).” The Seminar is free to SEA members. A $5.00 donation is recommended for non-members. To reach the auditorium, park at the end of Boat Basin Road and walk past the Coast Guard housing area to the Auditorium. SOLVE SPRING OREGON BEACH CLEANUP, APRIL 1 PORTLAND, OR-- Kick off Earth Month with SOLVE on Saturday, April 1! Oregonians will mobilize along the entire Oregon coast to remove tens of thousands of pounds of litter and marine debris washed in from winter storms. Presented by AAA Oregon, the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup welcomes families, schools, business groups, and volunteers of all ages to join together in cleaning Oregon's beaches. What: Every spr ing and fall, volunteers from across Oregon head to the beach as part of SOLVE's twice-annual coastwide cleanups. This home-grown tradition has benefited people and wildlife alike, supporting clean seas and healthy communities. This year's event marks the 50th Anniversary of the Oregon Beach Bill, which granted public recreational access to beaches along all 362 miles of coastline. This landmark piece of legislation has contributed to what makes Oregon such a unique place to live and visit. Join SOLVE on April 1 to commemorate 50 years of public beaches and help protect the coast for present and future generations! When: The SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 10am to 1pm. Who: This is a family friendly event, and all Oregonians are encouraged to participate! How: Register at one of 45 beach cleanup sites from Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to Harris Beach in Brookings. For more information and to see a list of cleanup site, please visit solveoregon.org or call Kaleen Boyle at 503-844-9571 x332.

Why: Since 1984, over 250,000 volunteers have removed an astounding 3.5 million pounds of debris from Oregon's beaches. This debris comes in many forms, from the single bottle cap littered on the beach to a thousand-pound commercial fishing net. A recent study published in the journal Science indicates that about 8 million metric tons of plastic are entering the ocean globally each year, the equivalent of five bags of trash for every foot of coastline in the world. With this number on the rise, the impacts on the ocean and coastlines are high: "Thousands of pounds of marine debris both from Oregon and across the Pacific basin wash ashore on our iconic beaches each year, threatening the health of our wildlife and coastal communities," said Joy Hawkins, SOLVE Program Coordinator. "While this is a worldwide problem, local citizens have the power to make a difference here on our own shores." Come Prepared: Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. All cleanup supplies will be provided. Volunteers who would like to help make the event more sustainable are encouraged to bring their own reusable bucket and work gloves. The most common items found during this event are broken pieces of plastic
