Before We Start In one sentence, please write your own definition of team.
Now let’s go around the room and share what our definitions have in common.
What defines a team? A team can be defined as a group of
people joined together to complete one common goal.
A team is committed to sharing authority and responsibility for performance and results.
A team should: Define and set clear goals
Set concise objectives to measure a team’s effectiveness
Define a tool used for team communication
Consult the team, as a whole, before making any decisions
Make a commitment to reach the common objectives
Why Teams Work Teams initiate change by providing
valuable feedback
Teams are a great source of communication and support
Teams are a collection of an organization’s best skills and assets
Stages of Team Building
FormingDuring the Beginning Stage a Team:
Setting and defining goals
Assigning roles
Getting to know one another
StormingDuring this stage, problems may start to arise.
Communication is essential during this stage to express concerns and suggestions to troubleshoot
Employees should use respectful and constructive suggestions to help better the team’s efforts.
Norming and PerformingNorming
During this stage, employees accept team rules and procedures.
Team member start to work together to accomplish the common goal.
PerformingEmployees gain a better understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
The team gains the ability to prevent or work through group conflict and resolve differences.

Ending Exercise: Back to Back Drawing Before we end our training, I want everyone to pair up with the person next
to you. Now please sit back to back with your partner.
For this activity, I will hand one partner a piece of paper with a drawing on it and a blank paper to the second partner. Without showing your partner, please describe the picture.
Your partner is trying to recreate the original drawing using only your communication.
