Falcon Scholars in Action Update

The Falcon Scholars in Action program has gotten off to a soaring start with a total of 25 scholars at 10 Shelby County agencies including: Boys’ & Girls’ Club, Family Connection, Shelby County Museum and Archives, SafeHouse, Shelby Emergency Assistance, Juvenile Detention Center, Owen’s House, ARC, Montevallo Senior Center, and Shelby County Arts Council. Among these scholars is Alex Demers, who is the first Falcon Scholar ever to serve 2 years at an agency. Alex is a sociology major and is currently serving his second year at the Shelby County Museum and Archives. FSIA is also welcoming their new FSIA Ambassador, Kelly Haberstroh, this school year. Kelly is a psychology major who served at Family Connection last year through FSIA. Kelly started her new role as ambassador this July and has been working hard to recruit new scholars.

Many of the Falcon Scholars are in charge of special projects for their agencies. One of these Scholars is Ali Junkins, who is currently serving at Shelby Emergency Assistance. Ali will be assisting with the Shelby Emergency Assistance’s new smoke alarm installation project. This new project will provide and install smoke alarms to low-income and elderly households in the Montevallo area. It is made possible by the collaborative effort of the Montevallo Fire Department, Bob Butterworth of State Farm Insurance, and the Montevallo Rotary Club. Ali will have an active role in taking new applications, presenting information to local senior groups, assisting with installation, and maintaining data of project participation. The kick-off for the project will be on Saturday, October 4th during the Montevallo Fire Prevention Parade.

If you’re interesting in being a Falcon Scholar in Action, applications are always accepted. Visit our webpage for an application.

Speaking of getting your hands dirty…have you seen the beautiful new

mural on the side of the Subway building on Main Street? The UM Office

of Service Learning partnered with the UM Art Department to offer a Mural

Camp class this summer. The camp partnered together UM faculty and

students with Montevallo middle and high school students to spend a part of

their summer making art and beautifying the community. Thanks to a

grant from CAWACO, Professor Collin Williams and Service Learning Director

Dr. Hollie Cost were able to make this dream a reality.

Everyone has been so happy with the results that we hope to host another

mural camp next summer!

Academics & Service: Courses & Community

At the end of the summer, the second Green Fund funded sculptural bike rack was installed by Harman Hall. Designed by UM student Rachel M. Hall as part of Ted Metz’s public art class, the bike rack is “up-cycled” from old pipes.

Service Learning doesn’t just benefit UM students—it also provides great opportunities for other local elementary, middle, and high-schoolers in Montevallo. Our signature programs include: • Montevallo Junior City Council – through a partnership with the City of Montevallo, a

group of MMS students collaborate to improve their schools through fundraising to provide additional support for arts, athletics, and academics. Thanks to the efforts of MJCC, the function of the city’s scout lodge is being expanded to also serve as much needed community center for Montevallo’s youth.

• Students’ Institute – through the David Mathews Center for Civic Life, MMS and MHS students go to field trips, host forums, and attend workshops

• Bulldog Scholars in Action – a new program, modeled from Falcon Scholars in Action, that places 5 MHS students with 3 non-profit agencies in town to serve 5 hours per week at each agency

Thanks to Ted Metz, Rachel M. Hall, the ValloCycle Board, the UM Sustainability

Committee, and the UM Physical Plant for making this dream come to life!

Other needs:

After-school tutoring in math and other core subjects for ELL (English Language Learner) students, located in Montevallo and the surrounding areas. This would be a great opportunity for students studying Spanish, or international students. Contact the Office of Service Learning at [email protected] for more information. Marvin Copes at Shelby County RSVP ([email protected]) needs volunteers to assist with an ongoing project called “Operation Reachout.” Volunteers could assist in the development of promotional materials/website, plan senior volunteer recognition events, conduct a survey measuring the effectiveness of RSVP services, and expand the Yellow Dot Safety Program. This is an open-ended, ongoing volunteer opportunity—please contact him for details. Kathy Miller at the Day Foundation ([email protected]) would be happy to have students who might tutor in grades 7-11 (any core subject); students who might serve as an on-site mentor during our school day, i.e., shoot basketball, talk, etc. This is an open-ended volunteer opportunity—please contact her for details. Andy Ward ([email protected]), the Outreach Hub Leader at Church of The Highlands Riverchase Campus, may have information regarding volunteer opportunities. This is an open-ended volunteer opportunity—please contact him for details.
