Economos has fur ther increased the hydrolytic stabil i ty of its H- E('()pur the rmoplas t i c polyur- e thane mater ia l used for manu- f a c t u r i n g Sea l - j e t h y d r a u l i c seals. Tested by immers ion in sy]~thetic ester at a t empera tu re of l l 0 ° C at 315 bar, the mater i al showed signs of ageing after 2000 hours. S t anda rd polyur- e thane sealing materials , when tested similarly at 100°C, suf- fered 50% reduct ion in tensi le s t rength after 500 hours and t o t a l d e s t r u c t i o n a f t e r 1000 hours.

Economos says tha t the re-

suits of its new development shows tha t designers can now confidently specify ecologically s o u n d syn the t i c es te r based hydraulic fluids when appl ied with Seal-Jet seals manufac- tured from H-Ecopur mater ia l and tha t such combina t ions will provide except ional long life in excess of 100 000 cycles. The new ester based hydraulic fluids are fully bio-degradable in soil, whereas t rad i t iona l minera l oils p e r m a n e n t l y con t a mi na t e soil and na tu ra l surface and under- ground water supplies if acci- den ta l ly spil led. In Germany alone, it has been es t imated tha t abou t 35 t housand bil l ion litres of water are pe rmanen t ly con tamina ted every year by the accidental spillage of minera l hydraulic fluids.

H-Ecopur is produced as an inject ion moulded semi-finished rod in diameters from 6 mm to 2000 mm.
