SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

PASSION/PALM SUNDAY; MARCH 20, 2016

8:30 & 11:00 A.M.

OPENING PRAYER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Merciful God, as we enter Holy Week and gather at your house of

prayer, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, to the life, death, and

resurrection of Jesus Christ; that united with Christ and all the

faithful we may one day enter in triumph into the city not made

by human hands—the new Jerusalem, eternal in the heavens,

where with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in glory forever.

Amen.

PROCLAMATION OF THE ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM

LUKE 19: 28–40

After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When

he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount

of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead

of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never

been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are

you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” So those who were

sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying

the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They

said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to Jesus; and after

throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along,

people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now

approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole

multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice

for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king

who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the

highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,

“Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these

were silent, the stones would shout out.”

*PROCESSION INTO THE CHURCH

Liturgy means “the work of the

people.” Our task today is to

make the move from Palm

Sunday’s shouts of “hosanna”

to Good Friday’s shouts of

“crucify him” when we are

confronted with the reality of

our parcipaon in the

betrayal, trial, and crucifixion

of Christ Jesus.

The Lenten banner leading the

processional today was

designed by Jim Eikner, whose

service of witness to the

Resurrecon we celebrated

yesterday, and was endowed by

Jim and Margaret Ann Eikner. It

was then made by Shari Tucker.

Thanks be to God!

*OPENING HYMN

“ALL GLORY LAUD AND HONOR” VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN

*PRAYER OF THE DAY MS. ABEL LAMAR

Everlasting God,

In your tender love for the human race you sent your Son to take our

nature, and to suffer death upon the cross. In your mercy, enable us to

share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his

resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

These stanzas for Palm Sunday

have been selected and

translated from a much longer

Lan poem wri3en by a bishop

who was the leading theologian

in Charlemagne’s court. They

are sung to a 17th century

German chorale, as adapted for

these words in the mid-19th

century.

.We invite young children to

come to the front at this me.

Each week children bring

quarters to put in educaon

scks, so that young girls

around the world might have

the opportunity for an

educaon. Just $275 (1,100

quarters) provides scholarship,

supplies, and empowerment for

a young girl. As our children

come forward for the Children’s

Time, please pass them

quarters to share.

The children lead the

congregaon in The Lord’s

Prayer (using “Forgive us our

debts as we forgive

our debtors”).

Following the Children’s Time,

three-year-olds through senior

kindergartners may go to C3.

Parents, please take your

children out to the hallway, by

the T.K. Young Room, and sign

them in. Helpers will escort

them to Room 203W in the

Jones Building. If you have

babies, toddlers or two-year-

olds, you will take them to the

nursery area (2nd floor east,

Jones Building).

“Come Inside” was

commissioned by Idlewild

Church in memory of Margaret

Montgomery, mother of Steve

Montgomery.

It is based upon the biblical

emphasis on hospitality that,

when Abraham and Sarah

welcomed strangers, they

turned out to be angels.

It also reminds us of the vision

of Idlewild, that “all who enter

find a home.”

WELCOMING PRAYER

This beauful English

paraphrase of a German

meditaon on Christ’s Passion

bears tesmony to the

unobtrusive poec skill and

musical sensivity of a future

Poet Laureate of England,

Robert Seymour Bridges. The

associated chorale is no less

carefully craEed and rewards

singing in parts.

The sermon is a reflecon on

the day’s scriptures, suggesng

implicaons for our faith

and life.

The Nicene Creed is the oldest

of the Chrisan creeds, wri3en

in A.D. 325 at a council that

was called together by the

Emperor Constanne shortly

aEer he won control of the

Roman Empire. He elevated

Chrisanity to favored status in

the empire, but there were sll

strong theological differences

within the church. What was

the relaonship between God

and Jesus? The creed states

that Christ is of the same

substance as God… fully God,

fully man. It is the most

ecumenical of all creed,

affirmed by most Protestants,

Catholics, and Eastern

Orthodox churches.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH DR. MONTGOMERY

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from

true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through

him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate

of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death

and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his

kingdom will have no end. (from the the Nicene Creed)

We bring to God our

celebraons and cares, praying

for the world, the church and

those close to us.

Doxology literally means

“words of glory.” Doxologies

have long been used by Jews

and Chrisans to praise God.

Here we honor and thank God

“from whom all blessings flow.”

The invitaon to the Lord’s

Supper is extended to all who

desire to follow Christ,

remembering that access to the

communion table is not a right

conferred upon the worthy, but

a privilege given to the

undeserving who come in faith,

repentance, and love. Even one

who has doubts or whose trust

is wavering is invited to the

table in order to be assured of

God’s love and grace in

Christ Jesus.
