CHAAR SAHIBZAADE The martyrdom of the Chaar Sahibzaade (four sons) is an important part of Sikh history and the occasion of their martyrdom is remembered and commemorated both with great strength and very acute sadness, by large numbers of Sikhs, every year in December.

The 21st and 26th of December are days that hold very dear memories for Sikhs around the world, for it was on

these days in 1705 that the older Sahibzaade Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji first set off for their

heaven abode on the 21st and then on the 26th, as the delicate and tender light of the younger Sahibzaade, Baba

Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji was cruelly and inhumanely extinguished by the Mughal ruler of

Sirhind.

Their names are respectfully preserved in Sikh history and are recalled every time Sikh Ardas is recited to honour

their ultimate sacrifice as ‘Char Sahibzade’, the 4 princes of the Khalsa warrior order.

At Seva School, collective worship assemblies were held during the final week of term across the different phases

of the school to commemorate this very important event in Sikh history. Mr Chandla, led the assemblies and sung

religious hymns along with staff and students to mark this auspicious occasion.

Ajit Singh Ji was martyred

at age 18, on December 7th

1705 A.D. at Chamkaur,

when he volunteered to

leave the besieged fortress

the enemy on the battle-

field.

Jujhar Singh Ji was martyred at

age 14, on December 7th 1705

brother, Ajit Singh Ji.

Zorowar Singh Ji was martyred at age 9, on December 26th 1705 A.D. at Sirhind Fatehghar with his younger brother Fateh Singh Ji. They were both captured with their grandmother, Mata Gujr Jii, the mother of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Chhote Sahibzaade were im-prisoned with their grandmother and put to death by cruel Mughal rulers who attempted to suffocate them inside a brick enclosure.

Fateh Singh Ji was martyred at

age 6, on 26th December 1705

Singh Ji. Both siblings survived

being bricked up alive, but then

the order was given for them to

be beheaded. Their grand-

TESCO TREAT

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT ON CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY

3

Thank you to everyone who helped raise money on behalf of ‘Save the Children’ on Christmas Jumper Day (15th December 2017). We are proud to announce that we have raised over £300.

Save the Children is an international non-governmental organisation that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.

It was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 in order to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, war, and other conflicts.

The staff and students were honoured to take part in this worthy and important cause.

As part of their healthy eating topic, year 2 visited Tesco on 5th December 2017 to find out about healthy eating and where our food comes from.

We had a look behind the scenes and saw their huge storage rooms. The freezer and fridge were room sized and very cold.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and experienced lots of interesting things.

This is what some of them had to say about the event:

Carter: “We made a yummy pizza”.

Hartegh: “It was a very good day, I learnt lots of things like why foods is put in the fridge”.

Jaskaran: “I had a good time and I shared my pizza with my partner”.

EYFS AUTUMN TERM 2: LEARNING JOURNEY CONTINUED

4

Week 4: The Magic Porridge Pot / Frozen

We have been learning ‘magical spells’ to make the porridge cook. We have learnt the rhyme “cook, cook, little pot…make me porridge piping hot.”

Week 5: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs / Shrek

We have been learning more rhyming words. We have also put the seven dwarfs in height order from the shortest to the tallest.

Weeks 6 – 7: The Christmas Story

Last week we performed our ‘First Christmas Nativity’ with KS1. The children were amazing and remembered all their lines in the performance. Also, a huge well done to EYFS & KS1 for singing so beautifully to all the songs of the Christmas story.

Next term we will be learning about ‘People who help us’ and are excited to have special visitors coming to visit us to discuss the im-portant roles they do to help the community.

We have been continuing learning about various magical traditional tales as part of our half term topic: ‘Who lives in the land of make believe?’

ART STUDENTS’ PICTURE PERFECT MOMENT

5

We are pleased to announce that our talented GCSE Art students Ruman Johal, Ria Jandhu, Mya Kaloti, Kamalpreet Kaur, Parampreet Kaur and Navdeep Kaur have been accepted into a competition affiliated by The Royal College of Art in London, in collaboration with the V&A art gallery and Cancer Research UK.

The students have produced some fantastic pieces of work this half term and will go on to produce a piece for the competition as part of their GCSE coursework. Winning entries will be showcased in the V&A in London, in the new year. This is a very exciting time for our students, please encourage and continue to support their achievements.

SECONDARY ASSESSMENT UPDATE

All students in Years 7 – 9 have been busy completing their end of term assessments in all their subjects over the past couple of weeks.

Staff have worked extremely hard to mark and moderate these in a very short space of time and have also updated the current ‘working at’ grades onto our new online data system. This will enable us to provide a much more accurate measure of progress in the New Year-for all our children against their baseline targets; something we are planning to report on during the next half term.

More information will be provided in the New Year.

Year 5 +Sport Move & Learn Sessions

'The Year 5 children have been really fortunate this half term taking part in a 6 week programme called +Sport Move and Learn led by 2 external coaches.

They had the theory element and physical PE sessions side by side and learnt the importance of exercise and fitness, the human body and important organs, the importance of diet, nutrition and hydration as well as learning how to calculate the energy provided by food and drink (calories)

They really enjoyed developing their skills in Handball, Dodge Ball and Football; as well as team-building activities and good sportsmanship.

FORM 7E SHOW EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE

Superb creative projects by students of form 7E.

6

As part of their Biology topic on ‘Organisms’, form 7E were tasked with the challenge of creating a model of a plant or an animal cell for their homework project.

The students researched thoroughly on the facts and resources required to meet the success criteria of the homework project. They were also told to be as creative as possible.

Mrs Thandi, a Science teacher with over 20 years experience stated: “ The results produced by the students were nothing short of being absolutely outstanding. It was about being creative as possible, and they most definitely delivered. I am so proud of their hard work and effort and they are credit to the school”.

ENTREPRENEUR INSPIRES TOMORROW’S FUTURE

In Business Studies, year 9 students have been working on topics such as the qualities of successful entrepreneurs such as Lord Alan Sugar, Sir Richard Branson and many more, setting up your own business, risks and rewards and finding gaps in the market.

The classes had the pleasure of meeting Shani Dhanda who is an award winning international event manager, global voyager, successful entrepreneur and disability role model & campaigner.

The students were very inspired and motivated by her story and her new business idea that is currently gathering a lot of positive media attention.

STAFF GOODBYES

PRIMARY LEADERS SPREAD FESTIVE CHEER AT LOCAL HOSPITAL

Our Primary Leaders became Santa’s helpers for the day on Tuesday 19th December 2017 when they made a special

delivery of seven huge sacks bulging with Christmas goodies to the city’s University Hospital at Walsgrave.

A BIG thank you to all the pupils and parents of Seva School who donated the gifts for sick youngsters who will be in

hospital over Christmas.

Every year since the school opened in 2014, at Christmas our school community have made this kind act of selfless

service to the hospital’s children’s ward. Seva is a Sanskrit word meaning selfless service.

Head teacher Mr Chandla said: “It was wonderful to see our pupils and their parents get behind our appeal this

year. It brings to life the ethos of our school, and one of the key elements of Sikhism, which is all about the

importance of giving without expecting anything in return. I’m very proud of our pupils and the teachers who

organised this”.

Alison Hanson, charity administrator at the hospital, who received the gifts from the pupils, said: “These brilliant

presents will make a big difference to the boys and girls who will sadly have to be in hospital over Christmas. It’s a

wonderful gesture by Seva School.”

HALF PRICE BOOK FAIR – A HUGE SUCCESS!

6th – 12th December 2017

Thank you for generously supporting the Scholastic Book Fair from the 6th-12th December. It was a tremendous success and greatly popular amongst our Primary and Secondary pupils alike. There was approximately £1500 in sales, of which there will be a profit to purchase additional books and resources for our school Library.

A very special thanks to all of the pupil monitors who volunteered during break and lunch times – see Mrs Gill in E1/E3 for a small reward.

Please also note that some books were out of stock for reordering. If this was the case for your child’s order, which was paid for, then they will receive a full refund.

Do not hesitate to contact Mrs Gill (Secondary English department) should you require any further information.

A VALUED SCHOOL MEMBER

Darshan (his name meaning auspicious sight) is our school tortoise. He travels around each classroom in our primary phase and visits all our students in their classrooms on a two weekly rota. Our teaching staff and students enjoy his company and learn about his eating, sleeping and living habits. Students experience having a class pet, remembering to feed and wash him.

Recently, Darshan has found company, on his days off from Seva School, with no less than ten other tortoises at his new residence.

Mrs McCormick, our newest administration support assistant, is a keen owner of tortoises and turkeys. Darshan travels to her home for respite and to touch base with his own kind. He truly is a very blessed member of our school community, who gives so much back in return.

A huge thank you to Mrs McCormick for supporting us with his care.

The colourful sights and sounds of Victorian London were recreated with great originality, while the lyrics and

music filled us with joy. Students enjoyed the Gothic horror elements of ‘Scrooge’ with the appearances of the

three ghosts, as well as light hearted moments of comedy and dance. As a recent review stated, “It was a rich

family friendly ‘plum pudding’ of a show!” It certainly put us all in the festive spirit!

This was an educational trip designed to supplement the study of ‘Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens in year

7, which commenced this term and will resume in January. It is also a key GCSE text that students will also be

exploring in later years.

Thank you to all the parents who waited patiently to collect their sons and daughters at the end of the day.

Hardeep Singh Bhatoe’s review of the musical and the novel:

In ‘Scrooge’ we have an old man who is a mean character and dislikes Christmas and everything about it. I liked

the part when Marley appears – he is a ghost who haunts Scrooge and was his best friend in real life. When he

appears there are big bangs of smoke bombs that I found exciting!

The storyline of Scrooge is trying to tell us that if a person is spiteful and horrible, terrible things might happen

to them in real life. It also taught us that we should not hate others. Near the end, it showed us how Scrooge

learns from his mistakes, starts to love Christmas again and begins to give away his money to people who need

it. This shows us that people can change.

Pupils in year 7 were treated to the musical extravaganza ‘Scrooge’

on Wednesday 13th December at the Curve Theatre in Leicester.

With an entertaining cast, superb staging and incredible illusions,

it kept us spell bound for two hours.

Pupils in Years 6, 7, 8 and 9 have started a new programme called ‘Accelerated Reader’. As part of the process, all students have completed the online ‘Star Reading’ test to determine their chronological reading ages and reading ability range. This information has now been shared with all students, so that they are aware of the books they need to choose and read over the holidays as part of their reading task.

The books they have chosen have been determined by their ZPD scores, (The Zone of Proximal Development which suggests the book-level range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading without frustration). Pupils will be able to choose books in the range of the ZPD scores they have been allocated. They will also be able to choose books from public libraries. The following website will enable them to look for books that are appropriate for them: www.arbookfind.co.uk

Before we finished for the end of term, all students in Years 6, 7 & 8 had the opportunity to select a reading book from the secondary library based on their individual ZPD scores. Year 9 have been encouraged to identify a suitable book using the website, a book that is line with their own ZPD score. This can then be borrowed from any of the public libraries in Coventry.

We are expecting all of our students to read their books over the holidays and then complete an online quiz which will test their knowledge and understanding of the text they have read, on their return to school in the New Year. Once the quiz has been completed, students can then choose another book and the process will start again (see page 11 for further information about the Accelerated Reader quiz).

The purpose of this programme is to not only test comprehension skills, but also motivate students to read as many books as possible. Reading regularly and for pleasure is, we believe, the key to lifelong learning. Your help and support will be vital in enabling them to expand their reading comprehension skills and their repertoire of vocabulary. Please encourage them to read for at least 20 minutes a day / minimum of 20 pages, so that they can perform well in their quizzes and enjoy the books that they read.

We expect all students to have completed this reading task by Friday 5th January 2018. Thank you for your support.

Next term, Secondary students will be periodically taken out of English lessons in order to have library lessons. This will give them an opportunity to continue to choose books and complete the online quizzes to determine the progress they are making in reading.

Cinderella’ Pantomime Trip @ Belgrade Theatre

On Tuesday 19th December 2017, our Year 8 students visited the Belgrade Theatre to watch the Pantomime ‘Cinderella’. Students were very well behaved and it was a lovely end to the term, rewarding them for their hard work and it was also a great way to get into the Christmas spirit! The performance was comical and entertaining and had many of us in fits of giggles throughout.

DEBATING: COLLABORATIVE SCHOOLS PROJECT

Here a few comments from our pupils:

‘Fabulous!’

‘Very enjoyable.’

‘It was really funny!’

‘A great spin of the traditional Cinderella!’

‘Very entertaining – it was great being part of the audience.’

Seva School have teamed up with the Finham Park Schools, Lyng Hall and West Coventry

Academy to participate in a collaborative venture that will enhance our students’ debating

skills. On Wednesdays, a select group of year 9 pupils have begun meeting during

‘Enrichment’ to select topics and to form teams in preparation for this. Those students will

need your support as parents in preparing their speeches and rehearsing them at home.

This term we have selected our topics and students will be required to conduct some

research in preparation for next term. Next term we will be researching these topics

further, writing our speeches and rehearsing them.

This will culminate in a coaching session held at Finham Park on the 5th March. The

coaching session will be delivered by Finham Park Sixth Formers. The best team will be

put forward for a inter-schools competition which will take place on 19th March at Finham

Park School. All of the teams will travel to Finham Park to watch this competition.

As part of this project, all of the participating schools will be receiving £200 to purchase a wide range of ‘Accelerated Reading’

non-fiction books. This will add to our Secondary Library and will all be books focusing on a range of topics such as ‘Crime

and Punishment’, ‘Animal Rights’, ‘Globalization’, ‘The Rights of Big Businesses’ and ‘Health’ ‘Freedom and Security’ all of

which will enable students to have materials to prepare effective arguments and speeches. We will be using these books for a

Scheme of Learning on ‘Writing and Delivering Speeches’ that year 9 will be embarking in their ‘Literacy Rotation’ lessons

next year.’

This project will prepare students for the ‘Spoken Language’ unit of their GCSE English Language in which they will be

required to deliver an oral presentation. It will also be an useful preparation for GCSE English Language Paper 2 ‘Writers’

Viewpoints and Perspectives’ in which students will be required to construct arguments and write to argue and persuade.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation with this. We will give you further updates in the New Year.

SECONDARY LIBRARY UPDATE

Our Secondary library has purchased a wide range of books from Peters the book publishers to supplement students’ study

of a range of topics in school. This will enhance their understanding of units covered in a range of subjects.

Exciting developments also include the introduction of Accelerated Reader and the Book Fair organised by Mrs Gill. The

Book Fair has generated a real buzz in school and enabled students to purchase books from a diverse range of genres. Please

read the reviews of books your teachers have read on their classroom door!

There is also a Book Club that meets on Tuesday afternoons to discuss books, read excerpts from books and to explore film

adaptations of books. This term we have been looking at the ‘Divergent’ series of books by Veronica Roth and ‘Geek Girls’ by

Holly Smales. Next term we will be looking at introducing students to a few of the Classics and Carnegie Book Award

winners.

In January all year 7 and 8 students will have a fortnightly ‘Reading’ lesson in which they will be taken to the library to take

books out, read silently and complete a range of activities organised by the English department. Years 7, 8 and 9 will be

required to write book reviews and other tasks in a ‘Reading Log’ that will be issued to them in January.

Please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes every day in order to expand their reading comprehension skills

and to widen their repertoire of vocabulary. Reading a number of good quality books over the Christmas holiday will also be

good preparation for them.

Finally, a big thank you to all the library monitors who have helped in labelling books, cataloguing them and issuing them

out to students this year. You will be required to help Mrs McCormick in the library during lunchbreaks next year. You are a

real asset to the school!

CREATIVE WRITING ENGLISH PRIZE

The English department have chosen three outstanding pupils in years 7,8 and 9 as nominees for the

‘Creative Writing’ prize. They are Tamara Vangaby in year 7, Harnish Johal in year 8 and Nemsa Dutt in year

9. The overall winner will be announced next term.

We have included an excerpt from Nemsa’s work below. Their task was to write about a prison inmate’s first

day in a jail, to supplement a unit of work on ‘Justice, Crime and Punishment’ for their GCSE English

Language Paper 1.

‘First Day’ by Nemsa Dutt—Year 9 It was as if the world had fallen silent. Motionless. As I stared blankly at the grey, steel walls of my imprisonment, not a sound was heard through the prison.

The echoing of heavy footsteps had faded into the ice cold air; the orchestra of loud aggressive voices giving into their exhaustion. Even the rattling of the pris-

on guards’ weapons against the iron bars had stopped.

My eyes become heavy with fatigue as a strange darkness crept into my cell: tugging at my eyes it slowly engulfed the entire concealment. One by one, the lights

that illuminated the eerie paths were dying away, flickering frantically until their bitter end.

A loud bang shook my cell, forcing me out of my paralysis of thought. Turning as quickly as my reflexes allowed, I noticed a man with a tall and muscular fig-

ure. Half of his face was hidden by a shadow and the other was highlighted by a frightening glare. An aura of dominance and authority radiated from him as he

looked down at the other inmates. He brandished his cane and swung at the iron bars. “Get up!” His booming, stentorian voice lingered in the cell as I left it.

The guard seized my hand with an uncomfortable force as I was taken to the last room I would see in this lifetime.

The next thing I remember was opening my eyes to having a blindfold ripped off my face and sitting in a chair connected to an unusual mass of multi-coloured

wires. The room was filled with smoke and shadows of people who were standing too far from the light for me to recognize.

“Any last words?” asked one of the faceless men. I had no reply.

I was too busy trying to comprehend what was happening. Lights flashed and lit the last faces I was to see. I closed my eyes and let the sound of buzzing electri-

cal wires burn away my last thoughts.

YEAR 7 RESIDENTIAL TRIP TO PGL OSMINGTON BAY ADVENTURE STUDY, MARCH 2018

Seva School has booked a three-night, four-day weekend residential trip in response to the questionnaire that many of you completed. The trip will be between Friday 23rd March to Monday 26th March, 2018 incl. Please note that this residential has a Mathematics theme. All students will benefit from this course regardless of ability. The more able will begin to see further potential in maths and its many practical applications, while for the less able, it will be their chance to see how maths is applied in the environment. As such, we would sincerely like to see as many Year 7 students as possible support this trip. Indeed, we would like to see the entire cohort sign up to participate. Residential trips are an invaluable part of the National Curriculum. Research has shown that students gain

enormous benefit from the experience, both educationally and socially. We feel certain that the course we have

chosen for our students will prove to be both enjoyable and very worthwhile for their personal development.

Another important aspect of the visit is that it is organised for whole tutor groups to be able to go away together at

the same time, accompanied by their teachers. This will facilitate the building of trust, the strengthening of

relationships within the individual tutor groups and will also enable Seva School teachers to get to know their

students much better.

The approximate cost of the residential will be £130.00, which will include travel, insurance, accommodation and

all meals. This low cost really does represent excellent ‘value for money’. The students will leave during the

morning of the 26th March, and will need to bring a packed lunch with them for that day. Although the final time

is yet to be confirmed, students will arrive back at Seva School during the day on Monday 26th March 2018.

ONLY A FEW PLACES REMAINING

We will require payment of a £50 deposit to secure your daughter/son’s place on the trip. The deposit will need to be paid as soon as possible. As usual, the payment will need to be made online via ParentPay. The remaining balance will then need to be paid by February, 2018.

For further information please contact the School Office and request to speak to Mr Patria.

BEHAVIOUR & EXPECTATIONS

Having a safe, positive and welcoming climate at Seva School is something we all pride ourselves on. We believe it’s not just the responsibility of the school to uphold this culture, but should be a collective responsibility between the school, parents/carers and the children themselves.

Our expectations of our students are underpinned by the values that are at the heart of the Sikh faith; tolerance, compassion and selfless service towards all — regardless of their faith, gender or colour.
