12:00 PM People of the Parish
BY THE WAY . . . Jumping the Gun . . . . During my live stream Mass last Sunday, I announced that we would be reopening the Church for weekday Mass on Monday, June 1, and for weekend Masses on June 6-7, following the instructions Bishop Serratelli had communicated to us. That was based on assurances that the Bishop’s Office had received from staff members in the Governor’s Office that Governor Murphy was going to announce a relaxation of his Order last Tuesday. That did not happen. As a result I and many other pastors across the diocese are left with egg on our faces! So, the church is not being reopened for Mass next week. Please do not show up. We will continue to livestream Mass at 10:30 each day. However, we do know the parameters that will be in place when the church does eventually reopen. Our staff has been stockpiling, rehearsing and preparing for this day. As part of that preparation I am including below a list of what you can expect to experience when the church does reopen for Mass. Please read them over. Changes in the church building: No holy water will be available. Everyone must enter and exit through the main front door. Hand sanitizer will be available at the doors of the church, or you may bring your own. Hymnals and missalettes have been removed. Half the pews will be cordoned off to promote social distancing. The confessional will not be used. Bathrooms will not be available. Changes in the liturgy: There may be music, but there will be no congregational singing. There will not be a collection, nor an offertory procession. Baskets will be set up at the entrance, and donations may be placed in them upon entering or exiting the church. Electronic giving is encouraged. The Exchange of the Sign of Peace is to be shared without human contact. The Precious Blood will not be administered for the foreseeable future. Holy Communion should be received in the hand only. For the time being, no altar servers will be utilized. If a lector is present, he/she should volunteer for the readings. If a Communion Minister is needed, the celebrant will ask for a volunteer. Changes in the congregation: We will be limited to 25% occupancy. This means no more than 100 people at any given Mass on a “first come, first served” basis. Once that number is reached you may be turned away. Everyone over the age of 2 must wear a face mask while in the church. Social distancing must be respected. Family groups may sit together, but others must respect the proper distance. No one is to hold hands at any time during Mass. Everyone must follow the directions of the ushers with regard to receiving Holy Communion, and with regard to prompt but socially-distanced exiting of the church.
Everyone must leave the church immediately after Mass so that it may be locked and cleaned in preparation for the next Mass. General Considerations: The lifting of the Sunday Mass obligation is still in effect. People with a cough or fever of any kind should stay at home. People particularly vulnerable to the corona virus, either by age or underlying medical conditions should stay at home and follow Mass by live stream. The 10:00 AM Sunday Mass as well as the weekday Masses will still be live streamed. To leave room for others, you may want to attend Mass on a weekday, rather than Sunday, Generally speaking, the church will not be open in between Masses, nor during the week. The times for the Sacrament of Penance will remain on Saturday afternoon. The confessional will not be used. Follow the directions for the location. General Disposition: This is a “work-in-progress”. While some of these provisions may be permanent, presumably many of them will be ameliorated gradually as time goes by. It will be a great blessing to be able to re-open our church for liturgy even under restricted conditions, and we thank God for the opportunity, especially of receiving Holy Communion. But it will require a lot of patience and understanding on the part of everyone to make that happen as smoothly as possible. Today, Pentecost Sunday we will have the pleasure of celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism-Confirmation-First Eucharist) for the men and women in our parish R.C.I.A. program. They should have received these sacraments at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, but we were prevented from doing that because of the pandemic. Now, finally, on Pentecost we will be able to celebrate with them. I am grateful to them for their patience, and grateful to Sister Batty Ann Martinez, F.M.A. and her team who have worked with these good people all through the year. There have been many articles on the effect of the Corona19 lock down on wildlife. The animals in the Bronx Zoo wonder where everyone has gone. Animals who have become used to rummaging through restaurant trash are not great fans of “take-out,” and empty streets and squares of towns are beginning to see more wildlife present. I am happy to announce that Saint Anthony’s is not immune to this phenomenon. We now have a red fox inhabiting the property. I have seen him several times, and this morning when getting the newspaper, I observed him having his breakfast by the school flagpole.
During this time of sheltering in place, Saint Anthony’s offers Holy Mass, livestreamed, every morning at 10:30 A.M. (Tuesday marks the 80th day we have been livestreaming since Saint Patrick’s Day). I am grateful for the many people who join us each morning, and for the many positive comments we have received from our parishioners, and those around the country and abroad who choose to join us each morning, as well as those who pray with us later in the day through various media platforms.
On Tuesday mornings at the conclusion of Mass, we offer the prayers of the Saint Anthony Novena. Our parish has been praying this Novena on the nine Tuesdays before the June 13 Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua for many years now, and we are happy to continue that custom through our livestream capacity. The Novena prayers may be accessed through our parish web site.
In anticipation of the arrival of our new bishop, Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Father Ray has been offering a series on Wednesday evenings on the Bishops of Paterson. This week we will look at the life and times of the sixth Bishop of Paterson, Most Rev. Frank J. Rodimer (1977-2004). Join us livestreamed from the church at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening. I have read several stories about the tremendous spike in business at hardware stores and home gardening centers. It seems that everyone is using the extra time to plant, fix up, upgrade, etc. I understand there are lines at Home Depot, and totally full parking lots at gardening centers. In light of that I offer the following Seedtime Blessing for all those of you who are gardening. Heavenly Father, you promised your servant, Noah, that as long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest shall not cease. Faithful to your promise, you give us a time to plant and a time to harvest. We ask you to bless our gardens and the crops we plant in them. Preserve them from destruction, defend them from harm, and increase them for our well-being. Grant that these crops, the gift of your goodness, may fill our needs on earth and prepare us for the joys of heaven. We ask this blessing through Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless you all. Keep safe. Father Ray

FEAST CORNER
IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!
Our 40th Anniversary Feast had been scheduled for June 10-13th, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be able to hold our Feast in the manner we are used to. However, we hope to do something in the summer or early fall to keep the tradition going-even if it is just sharing a zeppoli! We just do not know the specifics at this time due to the current pandemic along with vendor restrictions and various other concerns. We will keep everyone informed as soon as possible.
We thank you for your patience and support during this time.
