What the Bible Says about Gifts
The Apostle Paul - “Now about spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be ignorant.” 1 Cor. 12 :1
Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gift : A Definition
A SPIRITUAL GIFT is an endowment of motivation and ability, given by the Holy Spirit to every believer, to be used to minister to others and therefore build up the church (Body of Christ).
Spiritual Gifts
An Endowment
It is really a supernatural endowment. A gift that cannot be used up - and it is beyond my ability to understand or to explain - it is driven by the Holy Spirit
Spiritual Gifts
Gift’s Motivation
An inner desire to serve God in a certain way.
I must...replaces I should…or I ought to
Spiritual Gifts
Gift’s Ability A special capacity to serve which originates with the Holy Spirit
I get the gift, the motivation and the ability all in the same package.
Spiritual Gifts
The Difference between The Fruit of the Spirit from Spiritual Gifts is…“The fruit of the Spirit reveal Christ’s contribution to our character, while our spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make to God’s kingdom.”
10 Truths about Spiritual Gifts
1. Only BELIEVERS have spiritual gifts. 1 Cor. 2:14
2. Every Christian has at least one (1) SPIRITUAL gift. 1 Cor. 7:7
3. No one receives ALL of the gifts. 1 Cor. 12:27-30
Spiritual Gifts
10 Truths about Spiritual Gifts
4. No single gift is given to EVERYONE. 1 Cor. 12:29-30
5. You can’t EARN OR WORK FOR a spiritual gift. Eph. 4:7
6. The HOLY SPIRIT decides what gifts you or I get. 1 Cor. 12:11
Spiritual Gifts
10 Truths about Spiritual Gifts
7. The gifts I’m given are PERMANENT. Rom. 11:29

C. RECOGNIZE THAT YOU & YOUR TEAM HAVE BOTH A PRIMARY AND A SECONDARY MINISTRY THROUGH YOUR CHURCH…
Spiritual Gifts
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
Your & Your Team’s PRIMARY MINISTRY commitment should be in the area where you are GIFTED.
Your & Your Team’s SECONDARY MINISTRY includes serving in any other area of the Body when you are NEEDED.

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
1. Don’t confuse gifts with natural talents
Example :Public speaking is a natural talent or
ability, but when another is encouraged through your spoken word, that is a spiritual gift (i.e. exhortation)
Spiritual Gifts
2. Don’t confuse gifts with the Fruit of the Spirit. Gal.5:22-23
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
“The Fruit of the Spirit reveal Christ’s contribution to our character, while our spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make to God’s kingdom.”
3. Don’t confuse gifts with Christian Roles.
Examples : Evangelist, Pastor etc. In other words, gifts = functions not office
4. Be aware of the “gift projection” tendency.(Expecting others to serve the way you do and have similar results.)
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
5. Don’t feel your gift makes you in any way superior to others. 1 Cor. 12: 21
6. Realize that using your gifts without love is worthless! 1 Cor. 13: 1-3
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
7. Yours or anyone’s Spiritual Gifts are not confirmed in isolation.
Personal inventory tests alone cannot determine your gifts. Your gifts are confirmed within community. Others within the church must see and recognize your gifts.

Monitoring My Heartbeat
The Bible defines the “Heart” as:a. “The organ that pumps your blood”
b. “Your emotional constitution or disposition”
c. “The vital force or driving impulse”
Heart
“Passion (heart) is the fuel of life. It is the great source of energy and drive. It’s what makes us explore new vistas, develop new relationships, and seek solutions to perplexing problems.” Bob Buford, HalftimeRees, Erik (2006-08-22). S.H.A.P.E.: Finding and Fulfilling Your Unique Purpose for Life (p. 53). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.
Monitoring My HeartbeatMy heart determines....
· Why I SAY the things I do
· Why I FEEL the way I do
· Why I ACT the way I do
My heart is the REAL me!
Heart
Monitoring My Heartbeat
Why has God given each person a UNIQUE “heartbeat ?”
Because you can do God’s will and serve God’s purpose by letting your heartbeat MOTIVATE you for ministry!
Heart
Heart What is your heart telling you
about Disaster Relief Ministry? When do you find yourself
saying, “I must do this”, or, “I’m looking forward to doing this”, not, “I ought to do this”?

Abilities
5 Misconceptions About Abilities1. MYTH: People aren’t born
with skills. All skills must be learned by experience.
This simply is not true. There are a number of talents which seem to be inborn, or are developed very early in infancy. When people say “He just seems to have a natural talent for it” it’s probably true!
Abilities
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
2. MYTH: Those skills which must be learned, are learned primarily in the classroom.
Actually, some of your most basic skills were learned at home, “in the street”, or somewhere else outside the classroom.
Abilities
5 Misconceptions About Abilities3. MYTH: If you have certain
abilities, you will be very aware that you have them.
Again, this is not true. You are probably using a number of talents or skills that you are not even aware of! You need some process of skill identification.
Abilities
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
4. MYTH: Skills that I use at work are only usable in that environment. I couldn’t use them in D.R. ministry.
Hopefully, by the end of this class, you’ll see the fallacy of this idea. Be creative!
Abilities
5 Misconceptions About Abilities5. MYTH: Most people only
have a very few abilities. Does anyone really know all of
John Scoggins’ abilities? The truth is that many national studies have proven that the average person possesses from five hundred to seven hundred skills!

A Rabbit On The Swim Team“Once upon a time, the animals decided to do
something meaningful to meet the problems of the new world. So they organized a school. The adopted an activity curriculum of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming; in fact, better than his instructor. But he made only passing grades in flying, and he was very poor in running. Since he was slow in
running, he had to drop swimming and stay after school to practice running. This caused
his web feet to be badly worn, so that he was only average in swimming. But average was quite acceptable, so nobody worried about that- except the duck.
Personality
The rabbit started at the top of his class in running, but developed a nervous twitch in his leg muscles because of so much make-up work in swimming.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing, but he encountered constant frustration in flying class because his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He developed Charlie horses from overexertion, and so only got a C in climbing and a D in running.
Personality
The eagle was a problem child and was severely disciplined for being a non-conformist. In climbing trees he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there.”

The study of human behavior was first developed by the Greek Scholar Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, around 400 BC. He identified four body fluids that he believed determined a person’s behavior.
In A.D. 149 a Roman physiologist by the name of Galen proposed a temperament theory that built on Hippocrates observations. His four temperaments:
Personality Development
“CHOLERIC”: extroverted/task-oriented type, “SANGUINE”: extroverted/people-oriented type,“PHLEGMATIC”: introverted/people-oriented type, “MELANCHOLY”: introverted/task-oriented type.
Personality
Scientific research shows that, as individuals……we are “powered” by either our:
outgoing or our reserved approach to life,
…our direction is “steered” either towards: tasks or toward people.
Most human behavioral scientists either agree with Hippocrates & Galen or have only tweaked his basic findings slightly (sometimes only by changing the terminology)
Personality Development
Personality
In 1928, William Marston, a psychologist authored “The Emotions of Normal People,” which introduced the D.I.S.C. letters in describing the four temperaments.
In 1977, John G. Geier & Dorothy E. Downey developed the “Performax Personal Profile System,” which was a personal assessment used by business & industry, & based on Marston’s D.I.S.C.
Personality Development
Personality
35% of your personality is genetically based (Nature) (In 1979 the University of Minnesota conducted a study entitled “Twins Reared Apart,” which revealed convincing evidence that much of our personality is inherited. A similar study at Indiana University produced the same results.)
Another 50% of your personality is shaped in childhood development up to the age of 6 (Nurture) (Parents have a great influence on their children’s personality; beware of attempting to make all of your children act the same.)
The remaining 15% of your personality development comes from the rest of childhood & adolescence.
The Holy Spirit of God is the only influence that can effect change in your natural temperament or your nurtured personality.(Unfortunately most Christians never allow God to “completely change” their temperament to His standards… see Galatians 5:22-23)
Personality DevelopmentNature vs. Nurture
Personality
Your past influences your personality, but doesn’t have to control it, the choice is yours. You are capable of growth and change.
Major events or crises in your adult life can have a permanent effect on your personality.
In order to succeed in family, personal, ministry & business relationships, people learn to adapt & adjust their style.
These learned skills are not a person’s normal or natural preference, but they are necessary for their life needs.
Holy Spirit is working in the lives of Christians to conform them to the image of Christ (Romans 8:9, 2 Corinthians 3:18).
Personality DevelopmentNature vs. Nurture

Success at work & ministry depends a lot on your people skills.
Success at work & ministry depends a lot on your people skills.
By learning more about your behavior & that of others, you greatly improve good relationships
In Disaster Relief Ministry, there is a great need for people who can relate well to others.
No one is outstanding at everything, you need others to supplement your weaknesses with their strengths.
When two different people don’t get along, it is usually a problem of inflexibility. No one wants to move out of their comfort zone.
Some people believe everyone thinks and makes decisions just as they do. The Bible is very clear that God has made each of us unique.

Plugging in My Personality
What happens when we try to serve outside our personality - How do we feel ?
1. WE FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE
2. IT TAKES EXTRA TIME & EFFORT
3. EVEN WITH THE EXTRA EFFORT, WE FREQUENTLY DO A LESS THAN WONDERFUL JOB
Personality
PersonalityLook for the uniqueness that God
created in you - you are a priceless treasure. Why did you listen to those who demeaned you…and far worse, why did you believe them ? No longer hide your rarity in the dark. Bring it forth.
In one sense, we should not need to imitate others and be comfortable to be ourselves, however… Paul once said: “Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.”

About MinistryMinistry is the heart of the Christian life. (Mat. 20:28)
God has uniquely shaped each individual for specific ministries.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About MinistryGod has given all his children a SHAPE
that can be developed and used in ministry. Everyone is a “10” in some area. Everyone has something to offer. Developing and using your SHAPE and that of your crew is an act of good stewardship and of service.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About MinistryThe evidence of the right match between my “SHAPE” and my Disaster Relief ministry is :
fulfillment and results.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About The Body of Christ!Disaster Relief, like the church, is to operate on the basis of spiritual gifts, rather than elected office. We do not elect people to positions. “A man’s gift makes room for him...” Proverbs 18 :16
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About The Body of Christ!Disaster Relief, like the church is a family , not a business; an organism, not an organization. Therefore we streamline the structure in order to maximize ministry and minimize maintenance. We do not bury ministries under procedures.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About The Body of Christ! The greater good of the whole Body
must always take priority over the needs of any single ministry. There is no place for “turfism” in God’s Family. Disaster Relief Ministry needs to be a part of your church’s overall strategy to make Christ famous.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About The Role Of Blue Hats !The objective is to mobilize and equip an army of servants who are maximizing their unique gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences in a meaningful place of service through Disaster Relief.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About Accountability!Everything in D.R. or Church Ministry rises or falls on leadership. No ministry can exceed the commitment of those leading it.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About Training!
Every D.R. leader and servant is a learner . The moment you stop learning, you stop leading.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About Diversity of Ministry!Just as there are seasons of
Disaster, there are seasons in D.R. Ministry. If an area of service isn’t fulfilling anymore, move to a place where it is. There are no sacred cows and many places to serve!
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
About Diversity of Ministry!Your primary ministry commitment should be in the area where you are gifted. Your secondary ministry includes serving in any other area of the Body where you are needed.

About Performance! We expect excellence in Disaster Relief ministry, not perfection. Excellence is doing your best. God deserves our best.
