Making the Best Better!
COOKE COUNTY 4 -H
We are on the Web!
www.cooke.agrilife.org
Hello and Happy Spring Everyone!!
Another 4-H year is winding down, and it is almost summer
vacation time!!! I bet you all can’t wait! Lots of places to go,
people to see, and things to do. I hope you will make room in
your plans for several 4-H activities that will be taking place
this summer. First, mark your calendars for the 3rd annual 4-H
Project Day, scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 20th in
the morning. I hope many of you will be able to come to the
County 4-H Camp which will take place from June 29th thru
June 2nd at the Cross Point Camp in Kingston, OK. We are
going to a new camp this summer! It promises to be a great
time for all! If you are interested, come by the office and sign-
up. Parents who want to come help chaperone at camp are
very welcome and encouraged to attend. Then if you become
an officer in your club next year make plans to attend the
county wide officer training, cookout and pool party from 4 til
9:30 on Thursday, July 30, 2015.
Remember that June 26th is the “deadline” for project record
forms and record books. Award applications, and scholarship
forms will be due on July 10th. Please visit our website, after
May 1st, for requirements for the banquet and all necessary
forms. If you would like to have paper copies before then
they will be ready and in the office April 21st. Remember too
that if you are in need of a ribbon to attend the banquet, the 4
-H Project Day or the County Pet Show on May 9th will be
two options.
Finally, during the week of April 12th thru the 18th, please
thank the volunteers who have helped you succeed in all areas
of your life!! I want to thank all of the volunteers who help
make the Cooke County 4-H program so successful!! The
little poem I have included is dedicated to each and every one
of you!! Thanks again!!
Valuable treasures like you make us beam,
Outstanding is the help you lend to our team,
Loyal in your tireless efforts all year,
Upbeat and always full of good cheer,
Notable for your compassionate touch,
Thoughtful in ways that mean so much,
Ever prepared with a welcoming smile,
Eager to go the extra mile,
Reaching out to those in need,
Supportive in every word and deed.
Until next time—Phyllis

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Michaela Blakesley, Kaylee Sicking, Jacqueline Smith and Victoria Smith proudly display their 1st place banner, belt buckles and trophy in Houston.
For the second consecutive year, a Cooke County
4-H Team has won 1st place at the Houston Live-
stock Show and Rodeo’s Ag Product ID Contest .
Three judging teams consisting of four members
each, along with two alternate contestants,
brought home 1st, 5th and 6th place awards. A total
of 64 4-H and FFA teams totaling 225 individuals
from across Texas competed in the event which
tests the contestant’s knowledge of agriculture
products ranging from artichokes to eggplant and
persimmons to tomatillos. 20 products are select-
ed and exhibited at separate stations where the contestant has 40 seconds to correctly identify the
product and answer one multiple choice question
pertaining to the product on display.
First place team members included Victoria Smith,
Jacqueline Smith, Michaela Blakesley and Kaylee
Sicking. The girls each received a personalized
engraved belt buckle, team trophy & banner and
certificate. Fifth place team members were Sadh-
vika Chitoor, John Kilpatrick, Thomas Kilpatrick
and Caitlyn Taylor. They too earned a team trophy
and banner. Sixth place team members consisted
of Amelia Becker, William Lewis, Grant Wilson
and Lizzy Wilson.
The Ag ID contest also recognizes individual high
scorers and Cooke County once again led the way,
having six contestants place in the top 25 of the
225 total individuals competing. Taking home the
top award was Lizzy Wilson, earning 1st Place High
Point Scoring Individual. Jacqueline Smith 5th,
Michaela Blakesley 9th, Sadhvika Chitoor 12th,
Grant Wilson 20th and Kaylee Sicking 25th were the
other Cooke County participants placing in the top 25. Eleanor Smith and Nick Fisher served as alter-
nate team members.
Team competition doesn’t come without the help
of others. The Ag ID teams are coached by 4-H
Adult leader Beverly Fleitman who accompanied
the teams to Houston. Phyllis Griffin, Cooke
County Extension Agent for 4-H & Youth Devel-
opment also assisted on the trip along with parents
and siblings of team members.

THE COOKE COUNTY CLOVER CONNECTION Page 18
This Month we would like to recognize another very important adult volun-teer in our 4-H program and her name is Beverly Fleitman. Whether it be cooking for the spaghetti dinner, planning 4-H camp, planning for the achievement banquet or overseeing the 4-Hers that are members of the Livestock Club, Beverly Fleitman has a constant presence. Perhaps her big-gest influence has been the development of the Agriculture Product ID Teams. For two consecutive years now, two different teams she trained have won top honors at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo contest. Beverly tirelessly gives of her time and knowledge to help train these 4-Hers and as if that wasn't enough, she is the club manager for the Livestock club and is diligently working on forming a meats judging team that will
compete for the first time next month.
Cooke County 4-H is blessed to have such a caring and giving volunteer.

The Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador and Equine Ambas-sador Programs strive to provide high school aged 4-H members the opportunity to develop and practice advanced leadership skills related to mentoring other youth. Students completing the requirements become accountable to his/her County Extension Agent, their community and the program. Selected students in the Livestock Program are exposed to rigorous college level animal science “short courses” on the campuses of Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University. Equine Ambassadors “short courses” take place right here in Cooke County at Lone Oak Ranch & Retreat. Deadline to apply for the Equine Ambassador program is May 1, 2015 with notification in early June. The Livestock Ambassador program application deadline is June 1, 2015 with notifica-tion of selection by June 26. Both of these programs are excellent opportunities for a State level leadership position. Please contact the extension office for details on how to apply.
