A Message From Our PresidentDear Fellow Serrans, I can’t thank you enough for your prayers, donations and masses for my husband, Dick, and all of the support given to me. It is most appreciated. Now down to business, we are busy making plans for our golf tournament in May. I hope you’re thinking about donations to the auction, along with persons to play golf in the tourna-ment or you may want to sponsor a priest to play. Our location had changed this year to Tapawingo National Club off Gravois near the Meramec River. More information to follow. The Officer Installation Mass and dinner will again be held at Mary Queen of Peace church and Westbor-ough Country Club on June 25th. Our Cardinal baseball game will be September 2nd. Sincerely, Anita
Pastor’s Luncheon
Prayer Is the Most Important IngredientThe Serra Club of Saint Louis Pastors Luncheon February 12, 2014
By Serran Tom Fasl
Wednesday afternoon February 12th, Archbishop Robert Carlson, and Clergy from the
Archdiocese of Saint Louis joined the officers and members of the Serra Club of Saint Louis for the annual Pastors Luncheon at the Saint Louis Club. The afternoon began with welcoming remarks by our President Anita Mulligan, opening prayer by Father Chris Martin, Director of the Archdiocese Office of Vocations and the invocation by Archbishop Robert Carlson. The one hundred ten in attendance enjoyed a wonderful lunch of Veal or Salmon “Thank You Jane Gerritzen”! When lunch was completed Anita Mulligan introduced our guest speaker Archbishop Robert Carlson. Archbishop Carlson began his remarks with an acknowledgement of the success of the recent Catholic Men for Christ conference and its principal guest speak Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He reminded all present that in April the Church will canonize two popes; Blessed Pope John the XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II. It was John Paul II in 1978, during the inauguration of his papacy, who declared “Open wide the doors to Christ” the Archbishop recalled. The Archbishop also reminded us that it was John Paul II who declared that “Serra is the vocation arm of the Church”. The Archbishop recalled a study that young people, discerning a vocation ,will experience the
call to serve Christ at two distinct times in their lives, one is at eleven years old (6th grade) and the second is during their 11th grade school year. At the invitation of Father Chris Martin, Archbishop Carlson spent the day with 600 sixth graders of the Archdiocese recently. He asked them to open wide the doors of their hearts to the calling of God. “It was a delightful experience” stated
Archbishop Carlson. The Archbishop stressed that it is important for Serrans to understand the need for our vocation prayers. In addition to our prayers the Archbishop asks that we also extend an invitation to those we know who might be candidates for a vocation. The question is not “What are you going to do when you grow up?” The question is “What is God calling you to be”. Archbishop Carlson did not forget about the Eleventh grade students during his remarks. The Archbishop told us that he always reminds them that dating is the way to help the other individual get to heaven. That way may be thru marriage, single-life, consecrated religious life or ordination to the priesthood. The Archbishop affirmed that at the key to vocations is Discernment and Prayer. Of the 100 men who will enter a college seminary program 30 will reach ordination because of their Discernment and Prayer. As Serrans we have an opportunity to work with our Pastors to help young people discern what God is calling them to do at an early point in their lives. Archbishop Carlson ended his remarks with a request. He asks that each Serran spend five minutes in prayer during the upcoming weeks. The Archbishop asks that we pray that someone in our Parish family will reflect on a religious vocation and then come forward, because “Prayer is the most important ingredient”.

“Put on Christ: He awaits you in the Sacrament of Penance, to heal by his mercy the wounds caused
by sin. Do not be afraid to ask God’s forgiveness! He never tires of forgiving us, like a father who
loves us. God is pure mercy!” – Pope Francis, World Youth Day in Rio, 2014.
Mr. Nick Lee, a seminarian at Kenrick-Glennon, is a very grateful beneficiary
of a scholarship from our Hoflich Fund, and credits FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) for very much influencing his vocation. (Stay tuned for the full article related to Mr. Lee’s talk next month.)
