Guide for selecting suitable tubingTheselectionofthecorrectsizeoftubingisoftenbasedonexperience,withnogreatthoughttooptimizingenergyeffi-ciencyandcylindervelocity.Thisisusuallyacceptable,butmakingaroughcalculationcanresultinworthwhileeconomicgains.
The following is the basic principle:1.Theprimarylinetotheworkingvalvecouldbeoversized
(thisdoesnotcauseanyextraairconsumptionandconse-quentlydoesnotcreateanyextracostsinoperation).
.Thetubesbetweenthevalveandthecylindershould,however,beoptimizedaccordingtotheprinciplethataninsufficientborethrottlestheflowandthuslimitsthecylin-derspeed,whileanoversizedpipecreatesadeadvolumewhichincreasestheairconsumptionandfillingtime.
Thechartbelowisintendedtohelpwhenselectingthecorrectsizeoftubetousebetweenthevalveandthecylinder.
The following prerequisites apply:Thecylinder load should be about 50%ofthetheoreticalforce(=normalload).Alowerloadgivesahighervelocityandviceversa.Thetubesizeisselectedasafunctionofthecylinder bore, thedesiredcylinder velocityandthetube lengthbetweenthevalveandthecylinder.
Ifyouwanttousethecapacityofthevalvetoitsmaximum,andobtainmaximumspeed,thetubingshouldbechosensothattheyatleastcorrespondwiththeequivalentrestric-tiondiameter(seedescriptionbelow),sothatthetubingdoesnotrestrictthetotalflow.Thismeansthatashorttubingmusthaveatleasttheequivalentrestrictiondiameter.Ifthetubingislonger,chooseitfromthetablebelow.Straightfittingsshouldbechosenforhighestflowrates.(Elbowandbanjofittingscauserestriction.)
1) The“equivalentthrottlingbore“isalongthrottle(forexampleatube)oraseriesofthrottles(forexample,throughavalve)convertedtoashortthrottlewhichgivesacorrespondingflowrate.Thisshouldnotbeconfusedwiththe“orifice“whichissometimesspecifiedforvalves.Thevaluefortheorificedoesnotnormallytakeaccountofthefactthatthevalvecontainsanumberofthrottles.
