VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLEWHITE PINES GOLF COURSE ANNEXES BACK INTO THE VILLAGEHistory of White Pines Golf CourseOver 15 years ago, a personal feud between the Village of Bensenville and the Bensenville Park District caused the Park District to disconnect the White Pines Golf Club from the Village of Bensenville. REDMOND RESERVOIR EXPANSION PROJECTOver the last several months, construction crews have completed extensive improvements on the Redmond Reservoir located at the Redmond Recreational Complex. This 100% federally funded project includes increasing the storage capacity to approximately 6,500,000 gallons, resurfacing the path around the reservoir, mechanical and electrical upgrades to the pump station, native plant-ings, rock toe installation and shoreline stabilization. The substantial completion date for this project is October 30, 2018. The final completion date of this project will be May 31, 2021 due to the maintenance and monitoring necessary for native plantings being installed as part of this project. For additional information, please visit bensenville.il.us or contact our Public Works Department at 630.350.3435.
DOWNTOWN STREETSCAPE UPDATEPhase II of the downtown street scape is currently underway with the reconstruc-tion of Railroad Avenue and the Metra commuter lot. The project includes new hot-mix asphalt pavement, stamped sidewalks, curbs and gutters, driveway aprons, planter boxes, benches, striping and landscape restoration. The Metra commuter lot will be reconfigured to allow a PACE bus stop as well as bus layover space. The parking spaces will be reconfigured and one of the existing entrances on Addison Street will be closed permanently.
As a result of this project, the Commuter Lot will be closed starting August 15th for improvements within the Metra commuter lot between the Village Hall and railroad tracks. At this time, we anticipate the commuter lot will be completely closed from Aug 15 to Oct 15. During construction, we ask that you please utilize parking along Main Street on the Northwest side of the railroad tracks. We apologize for the inconvenience at this time. For additional information, please visit bensenville.il.us or call our Public Works Department at 630.350.3435.
2018 RESIDENT ONLY BRUSH & BRANCH REMOVALDO NOT BUNDLE BRUSH OR BRANCHES. The remaining 2018 brush pick up dates are:September 4 (out by 7 am on Tuesday due to Labor Day Holiday) | October 1 | November 5
VILLAGE CREWS collect larger brush on the first full week of each month from May through November. Place cut ends of brush and branches towards the street. Individual branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or ten feet in length. Brush may be placed on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week, but no later than 7 am on the first Monday of each month. Each street receives a single collection during a scheduled week; placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no pickup.
REPUBLIC SERVICES collects April through November: individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collec-tion day from your regular collection point. Place in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached. Yard Waste Only stickers can be picked up for free at the Village Hall. Republic Services collects these branches with other residential yard waste.
To discard root balls, break them up into small enough pieces to fit into your trash container for Republic Services to collect.

BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2YOU BELONG @BSD2!District 2’s 2018-19 theme proclaims that ‘everyone is welcome here!’Last fall, Nashville singer/songwriter Steve Seskin and fourth and fifth graders from W.A. Johnson School teamed up to write and perform a new song titled I Belong. The song proclaims that everyone is welcome here and we are stronger together, and it was inspired by Blackhawk Middle School’s 2017-18 theme, I Belong @blackhawk_ms.
Later that winter, the song was recorded by Pete Sallis – another Nashville singer/songwriter – with backing vocals provided by the Blackhawk Middle School Chorus.
Now, it it is the inspiration for Bensenville School District 2’s theme for the 2018-19 school year:
YOU BELONG @BSD2!You can check out the lyric video for I Belong on the District’s new website at www.bsd2.org, and over the course of the coming school year, you can use the following hashtags in your social media posts to tell the world why you belong here:

RISE & SHINE!$3 million grant will make Bensenville schools places where everyone belongs.Over the next five years, Bensenville schools will receive $3 million to fund critical community schools initiatives through the Illinois State Board of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants program.
What are community schools?
“They’re schools that reach out to the entire community, making them places where everyone belongs,” said Dr. James Stel-ter, District 2 Superintendent of Schools. “They’re not only places where students get an education. Families are also there, getting the services and resources they need to succeed, too. They’re incredibly valuable assets for the entire community.”
In Bensenville, these community schools will be known as RISE Academies, with RISE standings for Resources Invested in Community Enrichment. This grant will provide $150,000 a year for the next five years to fund RISE Academies at each of Bensenville School District 2’s three schools and at Fenton High School.
Their programming will focus on such topics as...• Academic Enrichment • Technology • College and Career Readiness• Arts Integration • Social-Emotional Learning • Parent and Family Programming
District 2 and Fenton are partnering with the Frida Kahlo Community Organization to operate the RISE Academies. The Frida Kahlo Community Organization has many years of experience providing similar programs for Chicago Public Schools, and has already offered several after-school arts and dance classes for BSD2 students over the past two years.
In addition to Frida Kahlo, seven other community-based organizations have also signed on to provide programming for the RISE Academies. Those partners include College of DuPage, Metropolitan Family Services’ DuPage Center, Bensenville Community Public Library, Mindful Practices, Columbia College of Chicago’s Department of Science & Mathematics’ Scientists for Tomorrow Program, University of Chicago’s Logan Center for the Arts, and Learning Dimensions.
Look for more details about the exciting opportunities to be offered through these Rise Academies in the weeks and months to come.
DO YOU CARE?Project CARE Welcome Day is September 7Give just one hour of your time each week, and you can make a big difference in the lives of District 2 students!
As a mentor with Project CARE Plus, you will mentor K-8 students in reading, math, science, or other subjects.
To become a mentor, join us on Friday, September 7, at 10 am for a brief training session at the Educational Administration Center located at 210 South Church Road in Bensenville.
Project CARE kicks off on Monday, September 17
To volunteer with Project CARE or for more information, please contact Lara Schwarz, Community Liaison and Project CARE Plus-Coordinator, at 630.766.2605, ext. 3202 or [email protected].
‘TRUNK-O-TREAT’Don’t miss all the Halloween fun onTuesday, October 30Put on your costume and join us for Halloween fun for the whole family.
Bensenville’s community Trunk-o-Treat will be held Tuesday, October 30, from 4-6 pm at all three District 2 schools: Blackhawk Middle School, Tioga School, and W.A. Johnson School.
Each location will be hosting festive trunks giving away candy and Halloween goodies, and shuttle buses will run every 15 minutes between the schools until 5:45 pm. All riders must be at least 3 years old, and no strollers will be allowed on the bus.
The event will take place rain or shine. In inclement weather, activities will move indoors at each of the schools.

ANDDON’T FOrGET...
Doing laundry is most likely part of your every day routine. But did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire.
Dryers should be properly grounded.
Check the outdoor vent flap to make sure it is not covered by snow.
Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn, like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.
Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similarsolvents should be laid outside to dry, then can bewashed and dried as usual.
FACT• The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them.
!
KKK Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
KKK Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
KKK Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum.
KKK Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time.
KKK Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.
KKK Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
KKK Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly.
KKK Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.
KKK Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
