NO. 5 - SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 201590TH YEAR OF PUBLICATION

Dear Brothers and Sisters,Summer is almost over and

I’m sure we are all looking for-ward to another long winter and snow. We should all be look-ing forward to getting back to work in our respective Lodges and getting together with our Brothers and Sisters.

On August 16-23, I along with our 16 national delegates attended the National Conven-tion in Bonita Springs, Florida. The weather was great — if you like 90 degree heat and humidity — but that’s Florida in the summer. At our State Convention, a motion was made and passed unanimously that our 17 delegates support our Brother Joseph Russo for the offi ce of National President. I nominated Brother Joe and our State First Vice President Denise Furnari seconded the nomination. In her nomination speech, she asked all the del-egates from Massachusetts to stand in support of Brother Joe; 11 of us did stand for him, and 6 did not. I, along with the other 10 delegates who cast votes for Brother Joe, felt that the National President’s seat was a Massachusetts seat, and that it was our turn to have a National President. The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts is the second-largest Grand Lodge in our Order, and yet we’ve only had one National President in the last 30 years. I personally think that the reason this has been going on is because everyone at the National level is under the impression that Massachusetts is divided. I do not agree with that assessment; a few people do not make this Grand Lodge divided. However, this type of action is what makes National think that we are divided.

As State President, I had two appointments for National Foundation trustees. My two appointments were approved

by new National President Dan Longo and the President of the Foundation. When all the appointments were brought up on the fl oor for a vote, one of our delegates made a motion to change one of my appointments to one of his picks, even though this was highly irregular. The vote was taken and the vote was 2 for his motion and 38 for my two appointments.

Our new National officers are National Fourth Vice President Joseph Boncore, National Trustee John Sala-dino, National Commission for Social Justice President Kevin Caira, and National Foundation Trustees Albert DeNapoli and Philip Privitera. I wish them all the best.

On August 29, the Grand Lodge held its Lobsterfest at the Sons of Italy in Hingham. This event was a great success — the lobsters and steak were excellent and everyone enjoyed the day. I would like to thank everyone that attended. I extend a special thank you to my Lodge Brothers, John Argiro, Pasquale D’Elia, Joe Laugelli, Vin Perri, and my two grandsons Tommy and Patrick, our kitchen com-mittee Florence Ferullo Kane, Frank Guidara and my wife Marieanne for their hard work to make this an enjoyable day, and to Paul and Adriana Guida for all their help.

As you know, October is Italian Heritage Month, and the kickoff for the month-long calendar of events will be held on October 1 at the State House in Boston at 6:00 P.M. All mem-bers are welcome to attend. As the largest Italian organization in Massachusetts, we should have a strong attendance at the State House. The Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo will be our master of ceremonies for the evening.

The Grand Lodge will continue

its tradition of participating in Columbus Day by marching in the Columbus Day Parade in the North End on Sunday, October 11. It is imperative that Lodges participate in this event by sending representatives to march in the parade, as it is an important opportunity for us to remind the community that the Sons of Italy is a vibrant and signifi cant organization within the Italian American commu-nity. Visit the Grand Lodge website for the registration form and more information.

On October 17, the Grand Lodge will host the Heritage Month Dinner Dance at the Winchester Sons of Italy. The event includes a complete, homemade dinner. Tickets are available at the Grand Lodge or can be purchased via the website at OSIAMA.ORG for $35.00. Please join us and cel-ebrate Italian Heritage Month with your Brothers and Sisters.

We have finally received copies of our historical book published on behalf of the Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts. I encourage each Lodge to purchase at least one copy to donate to their local library, as well as libraries in the sur-rounding areas that may not have a local Lodge. Copies are available for $21.99 each by contacting the Grand Lodge, or by visiting the website at OSIAMA.ORG. I would like to thank Sister Theresa Farina, the Historical Commission, and Brother Anthony Sammarco for the great job they did on this book.

Brothers and Sisters, if there is anything that I or the State Council can do for you please let us know. We are here for you. Let us all get back to work and make our Order stronger.

Fraternally,Antonio SestitoState President

On Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at 10:00 A.M., Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, in collaboration with the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 of Brockton and the Italian American War Veterans, celebrated Italian Republic Day at Brockton City Hall. This marked the 154th anniversary of Italian citizens voting to replace the mon-archy with a republic.

The event commenced with a welcome from Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, and a presentation of a proclamation making the day “Italian Republic Day” in the city of Brockton. This was fol-lowed by short remarks from the Italian American War Veterans Past National Commander George Cataldo. Lodge Vice President and former City Councilor Todd Petti gave a short welcome to the crowd and introduced Lodge President Jacquelyn Bonarrigo. She gave a short speech on the events leading up to Italy’s change from a monarchy to a republic and then explained how Italians and Italian-Americans have contributed to our world in every way imaginable.

Due to the inclement weather that day, the Italian fl ag could not be raised outside, but was raised in the rotunda of City Hall. All stood solemnly as the Italian nation anthem was played. The morning concluded with everyone enjoying fellowship, hot coffee, and Italian cookies.

During the June 8, 2015 meet-ing of the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411, members gath-ered to present eight deserving high school graduates with scholarships. Four scholarships were awarded by our lodge, and four families awarded memorial scholarships in memory of their departed loved ones.

The Lodge hosts many fund-raising events annually, includ-ing the popular Wednesday pasta night dinners, porchetta dinner dances, fl ea markets, bake sales and other profi t gen-erating and festive events, all of which make these scholarships possible.

The following four gradu-ates received the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 Schol-arships: Travis Morazzini, Jessica Federico-Grome, Joseph Zonghi, and Philip Rodino.

The Faustino Piccioli Memo-rial Scholarship was awarded to Faustino’s grandson, Nicholas Piccioli, by Nicholas’s grand-mother Milly Piccioli and Aunt Diane Piccioli. Faustino “Tino” Piccioli joined the Lodge in 1994 and was highly respected among the members.

The Francis Cristofori Schol-arship was awarded to Marie Moncata, who will follow in her father’s footsteps. Thirty-nine years ago, Sam Moncata was awarded a scholarship from the Middletown, Connecti-cut Lodge, and like her dad, Marie will attend Holy Cross. Sam and Kathleen Moncata are members of the Frances-co DeSanctis Lodge #1411and are, of course, very proud

of their daughter. Lindsay Lombardo was the recipient of the Pearl Oliva Scholarship. Fran Cristofori’s son Mark pre-sented both memorial scholar-ships to the students.

“Friendly Fran, the Pasta Man” managed the Wednesday

pasta nights for many years. A scholarship recipient himself, Fran attended Northeastern University upon returning from service as a WWII pilot and was a recipient of the Golden Lion Award. A retired school teacher and valued lodge member, Pearl

Oliva Cristofori, who married Fran later in life, hosted a weekly Sunday morning, all-Italian local radio program for many years.

The Anna Massa Memorial Scholarship was presented by Anna’s husband Robert, and

was awarded to Dylan Jones, who will attend Tufts Univer-sity in the fall. Anna joined the Order in 2004 and will always be remembered for her beauty, dedication and tireless efforts in promoting the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge.

On June 29, 2015, members of the Samuel J. Musumeci Junior Lodge #2693 held an outing at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire. Members of the Junior Lodge, as well as their siblings and parents, enjoyed the various rides, games, and food under sunny skies. The Lodge hopes to make this an annual event in recognition of the many hours the members of this Junior Lodge have spent helping the Methuen Lodge #902 with events and in supporting local charities.

MOVIE: Perlasca: The Courage of a Just Man (Perlasca: Un eroe italiano). 7:00 PM. The real story of Giorgio Perlasca (Luca Zingaretti). During the 1920s, he was an Italian Fascist supporter fi ghting in Africa and in the Spanish civil war where he deserved a safe conduct for Spanish embassies. After some years, disillusioned by fascism, he is a fresh supplier for the Italian Army. In the war years he is in Budapest for his business. He lives an easy life there, well introduced into the Hungarian high society, without any problem coming from the war situation. When the Nazi’s occupied Hungary, in 1944, instead to leave (Italy had already surrendered to the Allies) he escaped to the Spanish embassy in Budapest using his old safe conduct and becoming a Spanish citizen, changing name into Jorge Perlasca. He starts working as a diplomat here. When Sanz Briz (Geza Tordy), the Spanish consul, is removed, Perlasca immediately substitutes him, like if he was offi cially appointed from Spanish authorities. All the Nazi, the Hungarian authorities believe him. In his new fake assign-ment, he starts immediately to hide, shield and feed a lot of Jews (thousands!) issuing Spanish (fake of course) safe conducts for the Jews of Sephardic origin. He is in contact with another Hero of that time, Raoul Wallenberg. The two, together with other volunteers, running incredible risks had saved thousands of Hungarian Jews from a tragic death. Incredibly Perlasca succeeded to save two boys directly from the hands of Adolf Eichmann at the train station. This hero, after the war, was completely forgotten, and his story comes out just in the 1980s because some of the Hungarian Jews wanted to meet him again. Cast: Luca Zingaretti. Heat oil in a skillet. Add chopped onion and celery. Simmer until onion is opaque. Remove onion and celery from skillet and place in a bowl. Add eye roast of beef to the skillet and sear all sides to retain juices in the meat. Cut a wide piece of aluminum foil in which to bake the roast. Place foil in roasting pan. Place seared roast in center of aluminum foil, or in a roasting bag. Gently add the oil from skillet. Place chopped onion and celery over the roast. Salt to taste. Cover roasting pan with aluminum foil to fully seal roast and contents (or place in a roasting bag). Bake in 350°F preheated oven for thirty minutes.

Meanwhile, add a beef bouillon to one cup of water and bring to a boil. Stir and turn off burner. Check roast after thirty minutes. Add a small amount of beef bouillon liquid and baste the roast. Cover and continue baking, basting every 15 minutes. Bake to tender-ness of beef desired. (Approx. baking time — about 90 minutes).

LODGE NEWS

On Wednesday, June 3, 2015, fi fteen scholarships were awarded by the Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 of Brock-ton at a celebration dinner at George’s Café in Brockton, Massachusetts. President Jac-quelyn Bonarrigo welcomed the scholars, their families, and guests.

On behalf of Scholarship Committee Chair (the late) Mary Santoro, Vice Presi-dent Todd Petti, Orator Gloria Cesarini, and President Jacky Bonarrigo presented scholar-ships to the fifteen talented recipients by reading a syn-opsis of their biographies de-scribing their amazing athletic and academic successes and their many accomplishments. Ten of the fifteen recipients were in attendance: Jenna Alfonso, Michelle Altieri, Andrew Ciulla, Joseph Hrenko, Abigail Howes, Samantha McGraw, Matthew Minichiello, Nicole Petti, Alexandra Nedell, and Lila Williams. Those that were

unable to attend were Nicho-las Colon, Rebecca Golding, Amanda Purnel l Michel le Robinson, and Maxwell Studley.

President Bonarrigo stressed two important issues to these young people: fi rst, to be proud of their Italian heritage while they are attending college and not to let anyone disrespect their culture or stereotype them for their heritage; second, to remember the kindness of the Sons of Italy and after gradu-ation pay it forward — to join a Sons of Italy lodge and per-haps even be part of a scholar-ship committee offering help to others needing assistance.

The Scholarship Committee consisted of Chair (the late) Mary Santoro, and members Sandy Bishop, Gloria Cesa-rini, Danielle Ross, and Lucille LaFranchise. The Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 sends congratulations to each re-cipient and wishes them much success in their coming years of study.

On Sunday, May 31, 2015, at White’s Restaurant in Westport, Massachusetts, the members of Vittorio Veneto Lodge #1035 met to honor the Lodge’s future by awarding scholarships to fi ve recipients. The tone was set clearly from the beginning by Fall River’s new Mayor, Sam Sutter. In his remarks, the Mayor encouraged the recipients to “come back and apply the knowledge[they] gained in [their] education to the future of Fall River.” Several people offered remarks following the Mayor, including Immediate Past President and current Scholarship Chair Robert Sousa.

The recipients of this year’s scholarships are: Dylan Almeida, Alexis D’Adamo, Erica Dube, India Rose Timpani and Arianna Gagliardi. Erica Dube was the recipient of a scholarship in memory of Angela Jean. The Alfonse F. Saulino Jr. Scholarship, named for the founding chair of the

Lodge’s scholarship program, was awarded to Alexis D’Adamo. The scholarship was donated by his sons, John and Michael Saulino. She also received the Robert F. Stoico First Fed Charitable Foundation Scholarship. Dylan Almeida was the recipient of a scholarship in memory of Anthony D’Adamo. The Vittorio Veneto Lodge # 1035 scholarships were awarded to Amanda Donovan, India Rose Timpani, and Arianna Gagliardi.

Lodge members voted not to hold the Scholarship ceremonies at the same time as the Lodge’s Installation ceremonies, as it had been in the past, but rather to honor the future of our Lodge as a separate event, and it was well attended. Congratulations to all the recipients, and remember Mayor Sutter’s encouragement to share the fruits of your education with Fall River, and especially with the Vittorio Veneto Lodge #1035.
