H EALTH C OMMENTARY BY J ABECCA B ANKS There are three com- ponents to a well rounded exer- cise program: Cardio, Resistance, and Flexibility Training, of these three, resistance training or strength training is one that is most overlooked. Most don’t feel it’s as important as cardiovascular training, i.e. walking, running, swimming, biking, etc. Did you know that around the age of 20, most begin to lose about ½ pound of muscle each year? Well strength training helps to slow that muscle loss down and even reverses the mus- cle loss. What’s so cool about this is, it doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 65, when you begin strength training, you still reap the bene- fits. The goal of resistance training is to gradually and pro- gressively overload the muscu- loskeletal system so it gets stronger. So not only does resis- tance training benefit your mus- cles, it’s also good for your skele- tal system. Overloading the mus- cles is the key. As a trainer I hear it all the time; “I don’t need to lift weights, I lift boxes on my job everyday” or “I’m always picking my children up and carrying them, isn’t that good enough?” Those activities are a part of your normal everyday routine, so there’s no “overload” involved. Overload means pushing your body beyond what it’s accustom to. When we incorporate resistance training in our workout regimen, this helps make our everyday activities of lifting, reaching, bending, etc, much easier. Not only does resis- tance training help make your muscles and bones stronger, but check out some of the other bene- fits: Controlled Body Fat. Building muscle actually helps to more effectively burn calories; muscle burns three times the amount of calories that fat burns. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn when you’re sitting still and even sleeping Decreased Risk of Injury. Im- proving muscle strength increases flexibility and balance, which decreases the risk of falling and other related injuries Improved Body Image. Studies (Continued on page 3) WZU PSTATE . attitudes and relationships and usher in God’s presence through the songs that are performed.

Many are amazed at the harmony this kids choir executes as well as the extremely high energy that is displayed for the sake of Christ, boldly and unashamed.

Some also consider it amazing that well over 100 children can display positive attitudes in one setting, as well as behave in a disci-plined manner.

Pure-N-Heart was blessed to release their freshman project entitled “Keeps Liftin’ Me Higher” in 2003. This was an innovative moti-vating high energy project that fea-tures many of the Pure-N-Heart members.

push-ups, squats, bicep curls, etc, when we’re doing them, but we ALL love the RESULTS. Lastly, most of you are probably thinking, I want to start resistance training, but I don’t have a gym membership and I don’t want to join a gym. Well, you don’t have to join a gym at all. I’m sure most of you have some dumbbells lying around the house. Pick those up and grab a towel and a chair and check out this website: http://www.fitstep.com/Library/Begin/exercises.htm . This site provides you specific instruc-tions of how to do some basic exer-cises, in the comfort of your home. Now that you know resistance train-ing can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in your overall health and well-being, and you have some exercises to help you get started, the rest is up to you! When training, I often use the phrase, “It’s all in the Mind”. So often our state of being, whether it’s physical, financial, relational, or spiritual, has to do with our deci-sions and choices we’ve made in our life. So I challenge you, make a decision and start your resistance program TODAY!

Reduction in Disease Symptoms. Many people who have arthritis, depression, dia-betes, obesity, and osteo-porosis have reported a decrease in symptoms of these diseases when they routinely participate in strength training.

Think about it this way. As Chris-tians, if we never experience any trials or hardships, we would be-come complacent and we’d never mature. James 1:2 tells us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” This doesn’t mean that we should be all happy when we’re going through a trial. But when we think about the benefits we derive, such as, purity, understanding, patience, kindness, and love. Thereby, improving our character and making us better Christians. That’s what brings us joy. I don’t know too many people who love

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Matthew 4:19-20 In the above passage of scripture, Jesus called Peter and Andrew (fishermen by trade) to follow him on this journey of being a Disciple. I often wonder that as Christians, where does our priority lie when we are out witnessing to those of the world. Is our priority to find those that are lost or to bring those people into our churches. When I was a student at Florida A&M University (and after I graduated), I did some recruiting of students (to attend FAMU). Was not being compensated for what I was doing, but I just felt compelled to reach back and help someone coming behind me. When I would speak to students, my primary focus for speaking with them was to get them to have the desire and the passion to go to college. My prior-ity was not to get them just to FAMU, but to get them to anyone’s college. A junior college, commu-nity college, a university, etc. My passion was to get them to college. My second passion when speaking with them was to get them to one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). My reason-ing for that was because there are some significant differences in at-tending an HBCU and attending a

predominately white university (and this didn’t matter the race of the student I was speaking with). There are just some experiences that one receives at an HBCU that are not available at a predominately white university. Finally in my recruiting efforts, I would try and convince the student to attend Florida A&M University. If I’m recruiting for FAMU, why would I make that the final sell. Let me tell you, the greater good was getting these stu-dents to college, not getting them to FAMU. My priority was getting them to college and if all fell in line, then getting them to FAMU. Every-one is not ready, willing and able to go to FAMU. I liken my college re-

cruiting efforts to the way we should handle recruiting people to come to Christ. As we witness to people, our primary objective should be to get them SAVED!!! Not what de-nomination they become affiliated with or what church they attend, but just getting them SAVED. Salvation is the key to Christianity. Not how one dresses, now what denomina-tion they become, not whether they are sprinkled or dunked, its about getting them to accept Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior and allow-ing the Holy Spirit to lead them thereafter. To much time and effort is put into members of churches trying to gain membership for their church. They want you to come to their church and support their minis-

try, but forget that its about the Salvation. I strongly feel that if you can show them enough Jesus in the way you walk, talk and act that once they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they will find their way to where you worship God and join you in worshipping Him. Even if they don’t join you at your worship spot, just be content in the fact that you were able to be a fisher of men and that you caught one of God’s lost fish and brought him to Salva-tion. Now that he has salvation, where he/she ends up should only be relevant if they are being spiritu-ally feed and nurtured. Lets get them SAVED first and let God han-dle it from there.

ENTREPRENEUR –VS- BUSINESS OWNER/MANAGER

So often we make the mistake of comparing ourselves to others, but the Bible teaches very clearly that we are each a unique design and we have different talents. There really is no one else exactly like you, (See Psalm 139:13-14 and Romans 12:1-8.) That’s why I be-lieve it’s so important for you to have a realistic appraisal of how God has made you. Then you exercise your leadership based on your own style and not someone else’s.

I believe He has gifted each of us to do certain things better than anyone else. The questions you need to answer are: “ What is my design?” and “ What talents do I bring to the mix in my organiza-tion?" By having a clear picture of who you are, you are able to lead from your strengths and minimize the negative impact of your weak-nesses. A realistic appraisal of your pluses and minuses can be critical to your long-term success.

An entrepreneur is a

visionary who’s good at seeing a need and then coming up with ideas for new products and services to meet that need. This type of crea-tivity is definitely an entrepreneur strength. They have an uncanny ability to see the big picture – all the way to the end results. Likewise, they are able to see how all the pieces can fit together to get results. They love adventure, are drawn to a challenge, and most of all they like doing something different every day.

Entrepreneurs have some limitations to go with their strengths. They are not good at projecting the actual amount of work and resources required to make his projects become a reality. Also, since they naturally think in terms of the finished product, it’s easy for him to assume away most of the detailed work (which he hates anyway) that is required to make his ideas successful. This contributes to his impatience with others who are working for him.

Most entrepreneurs don’t flourishes at running the day-to-day activities of an established organiza-

tion. Keeping focused on the details are not there strength. They are much better at pioneering something new, rather than operating the old and established. Entrepreneurs contributions are important to the success their business. Yet there are several essential functions that they lack. They need good management help to make there vision a reality.

On the other hand, a business owner is a good manager. They may lack the visionary strengths of someone like entrepre-neurs, but they have other talents that are just as important to success. A business Owner/Manager like to focus on the process of getting things done on a day-to-day basis. They enjoy tracking the details to ensure that tasks are accomplished and schedules are kept, all the while

CHRISTIAN BUSINESS POINTS

PAGE 7 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 6

keeping within budget.

Good business owners/managers tend to be consistent, time sensitive, scheduled, and good listeners – strengths that are not typical for entrepreneurs. As you can see, good business owners/managers are usually different from entrepreneurs in their talents and temperament; yet , both people are equal impor-tant to an organization.

In a recent article that I read on MSNBC, it was noted that the South’s (Georgia, Florida, South Carolina) is on the rise for AIDS cases. The article noted that the HIV infection rates for the African American communities, and high minority populations in the south explains how and why the south’s infection rate for HIV is increasing at rates greater than those of some of the major population states such as New York and California. As the rate of HIV and AIDS grows across the country, the south and right here in South Caro-lina, it is imperative that we become more educated on HIV and AID’s and be sure to take the necessary precautions to defend against the spread of this disease. Education is key. Along with testing, knowing about the disease (how you can catch it, what you can do to avoid catching, and how you can help someone with the disease is key. Get tested, know where you stand with the disease and then learn all you can about the disease and how it can and will im-pact your environment. Know that just touching someone is not going to get you the disease. Know that sharing needles, unprotected sex and other irrespon-

Also, in an a speech by Earvin “Magic” Johnson to the CDC, he indicated that AIDS, which use to be a gay white male disease, has become a black and Hispanic disease and that the black churches need to take action to help bring the new AIDS cases down. He stated that once the black churches can get in-volved, it will have an impact in the communities. One thing that is constant in the African American communities are the black churches and it is important to get the black churches involved sooner than later.
