Leadership in Service AwardDeadline for 2006 Award is January 31st

The National Office of the Order of the Arrow created the Leadership in Service Award to honor those Arrowmen who provide cheerful service to the council’s camps and to the community. Three separate awards can be earned for service performed in each of 2005, 2006, and 2007. To see more information on the Leadership in Service Award (including the official order form), please visit http://www.nawakwa.org/. If you attended at least one Ordeal and participated in Scouting for Food or the Carillon Service Project in 2006, then you have qualified for this award.

Adviser’s Minute

Brethren,

Start the Christmas celebration with the Carillon Service project held in Byrd Park in Richmond on December 22nd and 23rd at 6:00 PM. It is a good way to finish your requirements for this years Leadership in Service Award. Be sure to wear warm clothes with gloves and a cap or hat. We are needed unless you hear over the radio or TV that the event has been postponed or canceled due to very bad weather. We will also post a notice on our website.

Be sure to attend SR-7A Conclave 2007 on April 27-29 at BSA Camp Lions. It will be a great adventure filled with fellowship, training and fun. Complete and return the enclosed application without delay. We will travel to the conclave by chapters.

This past year was a good one for Nawakwa Lodge thanks to your active support. The challenge and opportunity of the New Year is upon us. We must create a personal positive plan of action to maximize success in the New Year. Your life in action brings meaning to brotherhood, cheerfulness and service. Your actions in living the obligation as a member of your troop fulfill the primary goal of The Order.

The Order is a thing of the spirit and of the individual. You determine its worth or value in your life. Be mindful of the trust and confidence bestowed upon you by your brother Scouts. “He alone is worthy to wear the Arrow who will continue faithfully to serve his fellows.” You are Nawakwa!

May the Peace and Joy of the Holiday Season be yours today and throughout the coming year.

In W.W.W., Mack Ruffin

My Brothers:

Another year has ended with another great Fellowship. Thanks to all Brothers who have served cheerfully throughout the year. I hope to see you all at the Carillon Service Project and at the Service Weekends out at camp in 2007.

Yours in Service, Joe Orr

Tucker Matthews

At the 2006 Fall Fellowship, Brothers participated in many ancient Native American Indian activities. Pictured above is the rarely successfully attempted “Tomahawk Levitation.”

This service is provided as an effort to keep our brothers who may have moved away in touch with the activities of Nawakwa Lodge.

2007 Lodge Dues are Due TODAY!!!If you have not yet paid your 2007 Lodge Dues of $10, then please do so TODAY!. Dues forms can be found on the lodge web site at http://www.Nawakwa.org/dues.pdf or at the Council Service Center. Please check your mailing label to see if your dues are current...if 2007 or later appears on your label, then your dues are current...if 2006 or before appears, then your need to pay your dues immediately. Those who don’t pay by the end of the year will likely cease to receive mailings from the Lodge.

Carillon Service ProjectDecember 22 & 23

7:00 PM until 9:00 PM

We need help on both evenings, so please plan to attend and give your support. This is the Lodge’s only annual community service

project, so please help us get a great turnout.

The Carillon is located at Byrd Park in Richmond.

Please dress warmly, bring a small flashlight, and plan to arrive early for training and possible assistance with crowd control. If

you have any questions, please call Mack Ruffin at 804-262-1834.

Nawakwa Lodge’s Spirit Committee is looking for ideas for 2007. Every year at the Section SR-7A Conclave, Nawakwa Lodge’s contingent seems to be lacking in the spirit department. This year shall be different! We are looking for theme ideas for the Saturday evening festivities as well as ways to coordinate this theme with costumes, noisemakers, etc. In addition, we are soliciting designs for a new lodge flag! If you would like to submit a design, please send it to the Council Office (attn: Nawakwa Flag Design) prior to January 14, 2007.

Stay spirited Nawakwa!

Will Swingle Spirit Chairman

Attention all Brothers!

2006 Conclave: April 27–29 @ Camp Lions Conclave 2007 will be hosted by Blue Heron Lodge #349 at Camp Lions at the Pipsico Scout Reservation. The dates are April 27 through April 29, 2007. The lodge registration fee is $40.00. Transportation will be coordinated by chapters. A conclave is where the lodges of the section (Section SR-7A consists of 6 Virginia lodges) get together for training, competition, and fellowship. Of course, the Saturday night block party is a feast that shouldn’t be missed. Conclave also gives OA members the opportunity to visit the different camps across the state. In order to register, please complete the enclosed registration form (and medical form) and return it to the council office by February 28th. In order to pre-order any of the souvenir items (whether or not you plan to attend the event), please do so on the revised registration form (available at www.nawakwa.org once details are provided by the section and/or host lodge) and return it with your payment by January 31st.

Founder’s Award

James E. West Fellowship

Chris Leech

The nationally recognized Founder’s Award was created and presented at NOAC in 1981 as a means to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to their lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates to fellow Arrowmen that he or she memorializes in his or her everyday life the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman and cofounder Carroll A. Edson.

The 2006 Founder’s Award recipients are (left to right) Jimmy Rogers, Tom Smith, and Rooster Wells.

James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive and served in that position for more than three decades. The West Fellowship award is available for gifts of one-thousand dollars or more to the Council Endowment Fund. This is one of the best ways to ensure that the Heart of Virginia Council can continue to offer outstanding programs and grow to meet the needs of the youth and communities that it serves. Nawakwa Lodge #3 gave its first James E. West Fellowship in 1999. The 2006 recipient of the James E. West Fellowship is Christopher M. Leech. W. Scott Street, IV
