MILWAUKEE'S LAKE PARK FESTIVAL GREETS THE MIDWEST VOCAL EXPRESS July 24, 2006 by Rich Kirwin, MVE lead Milwaukee, WI…5:00pm on a hot, sticky Monday in July and picnic tables are being loaded with cheese, crackers, sandwiches, potato salad, and wine. “Pop!” go the corks to 90 minutes of that evening's “Musical Mondays” show in Lake Park, on Lake Michigan immediately north of downtown. A wide variety of music is heard each summer in this picturesque open-air setting as the regular audience of hundreds of appreciative music fans gather for classical, j azz, folk and more. Tonight's program is 90 minutes of great a cappella entertainment presented by the Midwest Vocal Express, and friends. The series' longtime music director, Thallis Hoyt Drake exclaimed, “It was the best concert of the summer!” Under the direction of Dr. Chris Peterson, the MVE started the evening with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a catchy arrangement of “Puttin' on the Ritz”. The “Rain” medley displayed traditional barbershop singing style. It was at this point that master of ceremonies, Jim LaBelle, explained that men and women can sing close harmony, too. This segue allowed him to introduce “Heart to Heart,” a mixed voice quartet (who just won the Buckeye!) They wowed the crowd with their vocal jazz and kazoo tinged arrangements of “Seaside Rendezvous,” and “Operator.”. As “Women sing Barbershop, too” was announced, the Milwaukee Showcase Chorus assembled on the risers. By this time, more people had crossed the “Musical Monday's” stage than anyone could remember. July 24, 2006 by Rich Kirwin, MVE lead

Milwaukee, WI…5:00pm on a hot, sticky Monday in July and picnic tables are being loaded with cheese, crackers, sandwiches, potato salad, and wine. “Pop!” go the corks to 90 minutes of that evening's “Musical Mondays” show in Lake Park, on Lake Michigan immediately north of downtown. A wide variety of music is heard each summer in this picturesque open-air setting as the regular audience of hundreds of appreciative music fans gather for classical, jazz, folk and more. Tonight's program is 90 minutes of great a cappella entertainment presented by the Midwest Vocal Express, and friends. The series' longtime music director, Thallis Hoyt Drake exclaimed, “It was the best concert of the summer!”

Under the direction of Dr.

A couple of Gershwin put the crowd in their hands.

Buffalo Bills-Era Quartet Contest will be held. This contest, which promises to be a trip down memory lane, is open to any new or existing quartets. They will be encouraged to sing songs from and in the style of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. A double panel of judges from the past in the former judging categories of Harmony Accuracy, Balance and Blend, Voice Expression, Arrangement and Stage Presence, will set about to determine, from a field of ten finalist quartets, the finest performers of songs from a different day and a different way. There will also be two timers and a panel secretary, and the quartets will be asked to perform two songs in a time frame of a minimum of four minutes and maximum of six minutes. It costs only $20.00 to enter, and competing quartets will receive two CD's containing a diverse cross-section of great songs as performed by past International champs from that era, including the Buffalo Bills. The contest is sponsored by the Barber-shop Quartet Preservation Association, a subsidiary of the Barbershop Harmony Society. More information about the Buffalo Bills-Era Quartet Contest can be found on the Society web site, www.barbershop.org.

COTS

Our district COTS (Chapter Operations Training Seminar) is planned for January 13 and 14, 2007, in a wonderful facility at the University of Wisconsin Stout campus in Menomonie, Wisconsin. COTS contin-ues to deliver the best training of any volunteer organization, and each year new features are incorporated into the classes. It's also an opportunity to network with other chapter officers in your position, and to pick their brains about what does and doesn't work for them. Please urge all of your incoming officers to attend.

FUND RAISING BY OBTAINING A CORPORATE

SPONSORSubmitted by Dale Montgomery

If your chapter is looking for a way to obtain direct funding for chapter projects, be sure to send a representative to this Convention session.

A short, 1 hour, fund raising seminar will be held in conjunction with the Fall Convention held in Rochester, MN. The seminar, conducted by LO'L Grants Instructor Dale Montgomery, will review how to determine possible corporate sponsors, chapter responsibilities and requirements needed to work with a sponsor and methods for working out sponsorship details. The short sessions will describe strategies and techniques for acquiring corporate sponsorships for chapter activities.

Two repeated sessions will be held, the first on Friday, October 27, at 4 pm at the Mayo Civic Center, Mc Donnell Room. The re-peated session on Saturday, October 28, 4 p m. will be held in the Presentation Hall. Handouts will be provided and sample sponsorship materials will be reviewed.

Consult the Convention Program for the location of the meeting rooms. There are no costs for the seminar. Members can register in advance by contacting Dale Montgomery at [email protected]. Walk in attendees are welcome.

THE HEART OF HARMONY CHORUSARRIVES ON THE SCENE!

Submitted by Ron RankVP Music & Performance, West Allis Chapter

The newly licensed West Allis Chapter conducted a Vocal Workshop on Tuesday, thAugust 8 . Over 120 men on the risers, with POWerful direction by George Gipp

and incomparable coaching by Don Clause, Rick Spencer and Ev Nau, worked on Ed Waesche's beautiful arrangement of “All Alone”. A viability poll was taken and the overwhelming response was to enthusiastically continue the process to chartering.

Nearly 40 men of the Lake Geneva Chapter (Country Gentlemen Chorus), our sponsoring chapter, arrived by bus to add their voices to the mix.

Voices Only (current LO'L Division One Quartet Champs) graciously made themselves available as a teaching tool, and then later wowed the crowd with 15 minutes of absolutely wonderful entertainment. This is a quartet that is definitely carving a course for success!

LO'L District's Jim Lee, Tom Weber, and Terry Elliot along with BHS' Todd Wilson and Charlie Davenport were also on hand to lend their encouragement and support.

Mayor Jeanette Bell welcomed us to her community, and expressed hope that we will bring singing to the streets of West Allis.

Family and friends played “audience” for the evening and our “Sweethearts of Harmony” provided “coffee and …” during the break.

ndOur inaugural chapter meeting was held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 22 at th1212 S. 117 Street in West Allis, WI.

Weekly chapter meetings continue on Tuesday nights with time devoted to learning Barberpole Cat songs and tags, having fun with tag quartetting, and, of course, building our performance and contest repertoire. Holiday performances in December are being scheduled, and a spring show is being planned. Many of the Heart of Harmony Chorus will be in Rochester, eager to sing a song or tag with you!

Here is a picture of the CHIPS quartet while singing live on the "Garage Logic" radio show with Joe Soucheray on August 31. This was at the Minnesota State Fair while we were competing in the Talent Contest (made it to the semifinals).

"Garage Logic" is the largest local talk show in Minnesota; it originates out of KSTP-AM 1500 and is rebroadcast on 23 radio stations throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We got 15 minutes of air time, including three songs (one of which had to be "God Bless America," - Joe's favorite song), and also including some question and answer about the history of barbershop quartets.

Director Frank Marzocco then proceeded to show that conducting and singing go hand in hand, providing the lead in the senior's quartet “Easy Days.”

Wearing their bronze medals won in Indy, the men of the MVE returned to the risers to cool down the 90 degree night with “Jingle Bells,” (after all, it was Christmas in July!). Classical music lovers in the audience were pleased with a virtuoso performance of “Kazoo Koncerto” with it's many popular themes.

“African Trilogy” (in the Zulu language,) “Shenandoah” and “Orange Colored Sky” allowed the MVE to show they're not limited to strict BBS arrangements (or English). The Greendale quartet “Tetra” delighted everyone with traditional songs, ringing harmony, and coaxing the crowd to join in on “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”

The MVE brought the concert to an emotional close singing a very special salute to America in the “Armed Forces Medley,” with veterans standing and accepting applause when their branch's song was sung. As this full evening of acappella entertainment came to a conclusion in the great outdoors, the chorus gave the audience a deserved encore with “Let Me Fly.” This special arrangement was done by one of the MVE members, Jim Franklin, and is an example of how broad the musical horizons of the Midwest Vocal Express are.

Then it was time to pack up the picnic baskets, fold up the chairs and blankets, and head for home with a song in their heart.

Not resting on their laurels, the MVE is currently honing their “County Fair” set (Salt Lake City) for a show in Baraboo, WI

It's that time of the chapter year again to elect and report your slate of officers for 2007. District by-laws require chapters to hold their elections and report those results in October.

We will again publish a LO'L District Directory and we need those election results sent to International so they can be included in the 2007 edition. Please pay attention to submitting CORRECT INFORMATION including the up-dating of the email information. The data that is included in the District Directory is taken directly from international records that the chapter secretary reports.

Also, it has been requested that all chapters have a YIH (Youth In Harmony) Vice President. Your immediate cooperation makes this publication easier to publish if all chapters do their part in holding their election as required and promptly reporting those results to International.
