Grand Knight’s ReportMy Brother Knights,

I hope that you all had a great summer. As we started our Columbian year we were faced with the unexpected news that St. Joseph's Parish wanted to start their own KOC Council. 2015-2016 O"cers Installation

The installation of our council's 2015-2016 officers took place after the 5pm Mass at St. George on Saturday, August 29th. Presiding

over the installation was our District Deputy, Brother Tom White. All of the officers were present, except for three and we had a couple of other Brothers fill in for two of those. Fr. Jesus was also on hand and although he had no idea of the proceedings, did a wonderful job for us as Chaplain with his parts of the ceremony and in blessing the Jewels of Office. Thanks to DD Tom White, Fr. Jesus and all of the officers and family

members who were present to honor our new officers.

Corporate Communion

On the day following our Officers Installation, our council held a Corporate Communion at the 9am Mass at St. George. The event had been scheduled for some time prior and it was a matter of scheduling issues that the installation was the evening before and as such couldn't be avoided. Due to the back-to-back nature, the turnout was a little light for Mass, but we did have five of our Sir Knights in Color Corps regalia to lead us and the clergy into Mass. Brother Michael LaPre' made a brief announcement at the outset of how/why our council was attending the Mass as a group with our families and he then pointed out and explained the various council items that were on the Altar, such as images of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, our founder, Fr. McGivney, our current Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson as well as our Council Charter and council banner.

After Mass most of those present adjourned to the Iron Skillet to enjoy some breakfast and some enlightening conversation. We are going to try and schedule the next Corporate Communion at St. Anthony's but it most likely will be after the first of the year depending on the church's schedule. Watch for future announcements regarding the date & time. A larger turnout would be wonderful.

Intellectual Disabilities Drive

That time of the year is once again upon us. That's right Brothers, it's time to don that bright yellow and red apron and solicit donations for the Knights of Columbus' annual ID Drive and of course, hand out some chewy Tootsie Rolls in the process. Our state's entity, the Columbian Foundation Supporting People With Intellectual Disabilities, Inc., is hoping for a really successful campaign this year. Overall statewide, the amount collected has been on a slow decline for several years now, even though some councils have seen increased amounts collected, as has been the case with our council. It may be a little tougher for us this year to increase our amount collected, as we are now down to two parishes plus the time at Stater Bros.

The dates for the order-wide event this year is October 16, 17 and 18. We will be in front of the Stater Brothers Market at Mountain

and 16th Street in Upland on Saturday the 17th from 10AM until 2PM. We are cleared to be there on Sunday the 18th as well for the same time frame but that is not confirmed yet. We are also hoping to be in

front of the Stater Bros. Market in Rancho Cucamonga in the center at Carnelian and Baseline, like last year on the 17th and 18th, same times, but that is not yet confirmed. The dates for St. Anthony are Saturday October 24 after the 5PM Mass and Sunday October 25th after all Masses. We are confirmed for the weekend of November 14th/15th at St. George after all of the Masses.

We have ordered additional candy and we will need as many of us as possible to schedule equitably at all locations and times. Remember brothers, every dollar we collect helps people with mental and physical disabilities and as in the past, our support is in support of OPARC, based in Montclair and all those that they assist with their great program.

Then There Were Two

In late June we were notified by our District Deputy that he had received a request from the pastor at St. Joseph Church in Upland, Rev. Jerry Ochetti, of his desire to form a new council there. He asked for a meeting with our DD, Field Agent, Brother Joel Clelland and our newly elected GK, Brother Peter-John Mafnas. The meeting was scheduled, with the previously named. In addition, Jesus Maldonado, the Director of Liturgy & Ministry and a Brother Knight from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council along with another Brother Knight who is helping to spearhead their effort, Sal Chabolla from Council 14007 in Walnut, but a parishioner at St. Joseph, were also present.

At the meeting our DD, Brother Tom White questioned Fr. Jerry and Sal as to why the request for a new council was being pushed when the Ontario Council was already in place and seemed to be doing a good job in support of the parish. Fr. Jerry thought that our council could be doing more and have a greater presence in the St. Joseph community. He brought up that we could be hosting pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners etc. Sal agreed with Fr. Jerry but also mentioned that the Ontario Council had been doing a "good job", he just thought there could be more. Our GK, Brother Peter-John then mentioned that our council had been serving the parish for many years and that every time a request for a donation or help had come to us, that we had responded positively. That we had been helping at the parish's Fall Family Festival for over ten years by staffing the hamburger/hot dog booth, had our members available to help with other parish functions and made substantial donations to the parish over the years. That was acknowledged but it evidently wasn't enough. Father Jerry has been headed in this direction for a couple of years now and when he effectively killed the Lenten Fish Fry there several years ago by severely limiting our serving time to put on a more austere soup supper, the ability of our council to serve St. Joseph's to the same level as in the past was put in jeopardy, despite our best efforts to do so from a manpower/involvement standpoint. We were already gearing up to once again, staff the food booth at their upcoming Fall Festival, but in early July we were told that our services were not expected.

With all of that, it was decided that we needed to remove our equipment/supplies that has been stored at St. Joseph's for the past ten years, along with the custom-built storage "coffins" that held all of this. In late August, nine different members of our council moved the items to storage at St. George and several days later the two "cofffins" were moved to a new, larger and more costly off-site storage space.

DD Tom White has filed the paperwork with our State and Supreme Councils to establish a new council at St. Joseph. Thus far, two recruitment drives have recently been conducted at the parish and two First Degree Exemplifications have followed and a third was planned. Along with the new First Degree Knights and a number of transfers from other councils, it appears that the proposed new council has the required number necessary to move forward and be chartered.

While we are disappointed with all of this, we know the wishes of the administration at St. Joseph to make a change, is something that we will not go against. We know we have been of great service to the St. Joseph Community for many, many years and that is something to be proud of. Many of our current members are still parishioners at St. Joseph and involved in several of the ministries there. Their involvement with those ministries is not likely to change, just because our council is no longer of service to the parish. They will continue to serve as they have committed to do.

We wish the new council, reported to be St. Joseph Council1 16293, all the best on its start-up and pray for their success. If

the officers of the new council have any questions, they need only to ask for assistance in getting those answers. It should be noted, that our commitment to St. Joseph School and the staff and students there will not be affected. We will continue to support Sr. Mary and the staff and students in any way possible.

This change leaves us serving two parishes, St. George in Ontario and St. Anthony in Upland. Our commitment to both of these communities remains steadfast and we are dedicated to serve them both in any way we possibly can.

Fish Fry 2015

Our 31st Lenten Fish Fry endeavor, finished up the six-week run at St. George Church, on Friday, March 27th. Overall, the results were the best since 2011, with good crowds every night. We never fell below 200 and almost broke 300 on week three. We changed up a few things this year, most notably, the dinner tickets were slightly revamped with a change in the nomenclature and some minor price adjustments. Example being the adult dinner now known as the 2-piece dinner. Likewise the child dinner is now the 1-piece and the super plate is now the 3-piece dinner. This was accepted well by the customers as there was no confusion now as to what is included in a specific dinner. The only area that seems to be an issue is when we get a large rush of customers, we can't get enough fish cooked in a reasonable time frame to keep from having a long line of hungry customers waiting for food. Having two serving lines

doesn't help if we can't have fish there to serve. We have kicked around a few possible remedies for next year, with the easiest and most logical being a propane fired deep-fryer outside the kitchen. This can be used to cook additional fish during the initial crunch time in the first hour. After that first hour, the crowd usually slows down to a less hectic pace. We'll have to see what else we can work out.

Some numbers that might be of interest: We dished out 350 servings of our homemade clam chowder, an average of 48 per week. We also donated a crock pot of chowder each week to the soup supper up at St. Joseph's. We usually prepared 12-14 servings of baked fish each week. We sold out every night except the first two weeks. This is due partially to a group of seniors who started frequenting our event starting with week three. They are also partly responsible for the increase in numbers this year. We'll have to adjust our baked fish servings upward a bit as this group stated they would be returning next year. Our 2-piece dinner accounts for the bulk of our sales and that was over 650 dinners this year. It should be mentioned that another area where we do very well is the desserts. These are all donated by our members or their family members. We even have a few customers who bring in items for us to sell on the dessert table. This is very generous on everyone's part and accounts for a fairly sizable part of our proceeds at the end of the six weeks.

As in the past, this six-week adventure would not be possible without the hard work and long hours put in by many of our members and quite a few volunteers. Every

year we try to honor a few of these hard working individuals with our annual Fish Fry Awards. This year, the Youth Award was given to Amy Johnson, a student at Pomona Catholic HS. The Helping Hands Award was received by Violet Castillo and the two Fish Fry Awards were bestowed upon members Paul Hoch and Stan Castillo, Jr (see below). Congratulations to them all. There are many others that deserve our thanks and appreciation for all they do to help make the Lenten Fish Fry a success every year. Long hours were put in by many, but especially Xavier Lopez Sr., and Stan Castillo, Sr. along with Ray Hoch. Others who need to be thanked are Dennis Altenburg, David Kotce, Tony Aranda, Shaun Fesler, Richard Foss, Peter-John Mafnas, Lawrence Flynn, Tom Graham, Xavier Lopez, Jr., Jim Jackson, Richard Hess, Murray Johnson, Gilbert Maravilla, Manny Landeros, Bob Leonard, Efrain Aguirre, Jr., Michael La Pre', Carlos Reyes, Mark Ross, David Schaefer, Robert Stout, Don Rybarczyk, Steve Wierzbinski, Rudy Lopez, Victor Arellano and Kevin Cavanaugh. Also, many thanks to Richard Carniello and George Cerisara who besides working the event also did the shopping for us every week. Special thanks go to Robbie Robertson, who every year donates the dinner tickets for our event. We must not forget the wives and other volunteers who helped out in various capacities, especially Sandra Ross, Josephine Gaglio, Cheri Rybarczyk and Betty Cavanaugh as well as Dante and Logan Zappia. Boy Scouts from Troop 311 were also on hand for several of the nights to help set-up, clean-up and help with the dirty work in

the kitchen. Finally, thank you to Fr. Jesus and the staff at St. George for your continued support and allowing us to put on the Annual Lenten Fish Fry in Lucas Hall.

If we have left out anyone, it is by accident and we apologize for the omission. Your contributions are as important to the success of this annual event as those who were named. It takes everyone's input, time and talent. In closing, we need to acknowledge some of our Brothers who in the past have donated tremendous

amounts of time and energy and who for various health issues, can no longer contribute. Brothers Aubrey Irwin, Jerry Vermillion, and Barney Ticich we miss you. Two other brothers who were unavailable this year were Steve Flynn and Richard Williams. Finally, Past Grand Knights Allan Carter and Reilly Flynn. Both of these gentlemen have put in long hours over many of the past years, but despite fighting serious health issues, both were able to visit us for dinner during the course of the six weeks. Sadly, we lost Reilly just three days after our last Friday night.

Just a reminder, to mark your calendars. Our 32nd Annual Lenten Fish Fry begins on Friday, February 12, 2016. That is one week earlier than this year, so you still have some time to rest up.

Growing OldSubmitted by Bob Leonard

Lord, now that I am growing old, keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from the craving to straighten out everybody's lives, make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful but not bossy. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details. Give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and the love of rehearsing them is growing sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet. A sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. And give me the ability to see beauty in expected places and splendor in  unexpected ones. Amen!

I Ain’t Afraid

One Sunday morning, everyone in a bright, beautiful, tiny town got up early and went to the local church. Before the services started, the townspeople were sitting in their pews and talking about their lives, their families, etc.

Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate.

Soon everyone was evacuated from the church, except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy was in his presence. Now this confused Satan a bit, so he walked up to the man and said, "Don't you know who I am?"

The man replied, "Yep, sure do."

Satan asked, "Aren't you afraid of me?"

"Nope, sure ain't," said the man.

Satan was a little perturbed at this and queried, "Why aren't you afraid of me?"The man calmly replied, "Been married to your sister for over 48 years."

From Our Insurance Agent

Dear Brother Knights & Families,

On August 4, 2015, our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson delivered his annual report to the 133rd Supreme Convention being held in Philadelphia. He shared the following milestones of our Order:

*Over $173,000,000 of charitable donations.

*Over 71,500,000 hours of community service.

*Over $99,000,000,000 of life insurance coverage in-force. This amount has more than doubled in the last 12 years, and the Order’s Insurance program has earned A.M. Best’s highest rating, A++ (Superior), for the 40th consecutive year.

*This is the 43rd year of consecutive membership growth at 1,883,598 total members.

*Growth and new councils have expanded the Order into Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, and South Korea.

Additionally, our Supreme Convention was attended by nearly 95 archbishops and bishops, including 11 cardinals, scores of clergy and approximately 2,000 members of the Knights and their families from throughout North and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe. Our Supreme Knight also spoke on membership growth again addressing the attendees. “Most brother Knights say they were asked to join the Knights of Columbus by a family member or friend,” Supreme Knight Anderson said. “Yet too many Knights today rarely ask someone to join us. All of us need to make an extra effort to extend the benefits of membership to more Catholic men, so today I ask every brother Knight to recruit at least three new members this year.” We all appreciate our membership in the Knights of Columbus. We can’t forget to share that fervor with every eligible Catholic gentleman we meet. Don’t forget to carry Form 100 membership applications with you at all times. You never know when you may have a divine appointment with a future knight… Vivat Jesus!!
