I vaguely remember running my first charity 5km as an inexperienced runner, having done no training for it what so ever it was quite a challenge but crossing the finish line hand in hand with my mum felt like the best thing in the world.

The feeling I receive when approaching the finish line of any race still gets me now; the buzz, the emotions as people you don’t even know start cheering for you, the atmosphere, it’s amazing. Today as a more experienced athlete I now know the importance of regular training and would like to help you train for your first 5km. Running a 5km is a great goal for new runners. You will gain lots of motivation and enjoyment from taking part in the race and the 5k distance (3.1 miles) is perfect for race virgins.

As well as the psychological benefits that running brings, regular aerobic exercise will help to improve your cardiovascular health, boost energy levels and help you lose weight. Before beginning any exercise programme it is important to check with your doctor to rule out any potential medical conditions

allowing you to start your training with confidence.

So lets get started. For the complete beginner, spend the first few weeks of your training walking and running until you can run non stop for 10 minutes. This may mean running for 30 seconds, walking for 1 minute and so on until you can increase your run periods and reduce your running intervals.

The slow build up and easy pacing will allow your body to adapt to running 5km continuously. The next step will be to build up your endurance and eliminate the walking breaks.

The table to the right is my recommended 7 week programme to get you running a complete 5km. The planis very flexible. If you are finding it too easy just skip to the next week. If you are finding it a bit too challenging just repeat the previous week you are on until you are ready to progress.

It is also important to rest and cross train on the days between runs to allow for recovery.

Once you have completed the above programme and are ready to run your first 5km race.

You only get to run your first 5km once in a lifetime so make sure you enjoy it. Soak up the atmosphere, run for the finish rather than the finish time and celebrate your accomplishment.

Yes you will be nervous, I still get pre-race nerves, it’s natural and proves that you care enough to be nervous.

Once you cross the finish line you will be overwhelmed by emotions, (believe me). You will feel a combination of exhaustion, exhilaration and have achey legs. Regardless of your time or the number in which you finish you should feel a sense of accomplishment.

You have completed your goal of finishing the 5km, and i’m sure within a very short period of time you will ask yourself “When can I do this again!”

-Becca has run several 5km and 10km events and finished as first lady in most of them!

At Gosling we aim to give everyone who plays tennis at the Sports Park a fantastic tennis experience.

Working in partnership with Herts LTA, the LTA and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council we have been able to resurface all of the courts and replace the backdrops.

Players will find that as well as looking prestine, the courts will be brilliant to play on. Courts 1-9 will be the speed and colour of the US Open courts, whilst the courts in the bubble will be the same speed as those found at the Australian Open.

The new surfaces will play signficantly slower than the old courts which will increase the length of the rally and so increase the physical, mental, tactical and technical demands on our players. This will improve the quality of the matches in the short term but also increase the ability of our players to compete against players from outside of Gosling.

The courts are available for everyone to use.

To book call 01707 384307 or visit goslingsports.co.uk for details of our Tennis Memberships and our money-saving 72 hour offer!

Under Article 15.3 there are two trustees retiring by rotation. These are Dave Kenyon and Trevor Elliot. As an Independant Charitable Trust, it is crucial that the Board of Directors, whom are volunteers, continue to offer a diverse range of business skills and experiences to help direct the Sports Park.

Many of us need to follow an exercise program, in order to remain healthy. Below, you’ll find several good reasons why you should start exercising now.

1Contributes to Fat LossIt is well proven from scientific research all over the world that

physical exercise contributes to weight loss. If you burn morecalories than you consume through nutrition, you’ll lose weight. Whenyou exercise, you burn more calories than when you don’t. It’s really simple - the more you exercise, the more weight or fat you’ll lose.

2Prevents DiseaseThe chances of developing several various diseases has

been proven to decrease when exercising. These diseases include heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and strokes.

Around 4 out of 5 deaths caused by heart disease and cancer, are linked to factors that include stress and lack of exercise. We all know that diabetes

diabetes increases the chance for heart attacks and strokes. What this shows is that many of the risk factors and diseases caused by not exercising are working in conjunction to damage your health. To preventthis from happening, start exercising.

3Improves DiseasesMany severe and minor diseases can be improved or

even healed through regular exercise. These even include the diseases listed above. By following a regular plan, you can also decrease HDL cholesterol levels, decrease triglyceride levels, and decrease your blood pressure as well.

Exercising on a regular basis will also reduce the risk of prostate cancer for men, breast and uterine cancer for women, and much more. All of this is scientifically proven, which is why you should start exercising today.

4Enhance Your State-of-MindEveryone knows, from the many scientific studies, that

regular exercising will lead to an

increased release of endorphins in the body. These chemicals will fight depression and make you feel happy. The body releases these endorphins only 12 minutes into the workout.

There is another chemical known as serotonin that is increased during and after a workout. The increased levels of serotonin in the central nervous system is associated with feelings of well being and decreased mental depression. The chemical can also help you sleep better at night.

5Enhances Your WellnessWhen you are in great shape and really fit, you’ll have more

energy and you’ll notice that your overall mood is improved. You will have experienced that you can stretch beyond your own limits and you know that you can do more than you thought possible.

6Develops PersistenceExercising regularly will give you more energy, which can

help you be more productive at home and at work. Exercising can help give your new goals a sense of purpose and give you something to focus on and aim for. This can help you increase your persistence and prevent you from going off track while you aim for your goal.

7Enhances Your Social LifeAfter a workout on a regular basis you can boost your

self esteem. This can help you look better and you’ll be more comfortable as well.

Exercise will also help you to become more active and meet new people, which will prevent you from feeling isolated and unsupported. Exercise will also increase your interests in sex, and can help you to improve your marriage or your partner relationship.

After knowing all of these tips and reasons to exercise, you shouldn’t hesitate to get out there and exercise. 30 minutes is only 2% of your day. Spending that 2% of your day on increasing your fitness levels means you’ll feel better than ever before and your body will thank you.

At Gosling Health Club we believe in fitness being a journey. Call01707 331 056 and get your’s started today with a unique program.
