As most of us already know, each year during the first week of September the skies over Western Illinois are filled with Boeing Stearman Model 75 aircraft. Their familiar rumble is reminiscent of Harley Davidson motorcycles. They are distinctive. You don’t have to see them to know they are there.

We are accustomed to the sights and sounds of Stearman aircraft in Galesburg. But, how much do we really know about these iconic biplanes? With a lot of help from Wikipedia I will try to enlighten us all.

According to the National Museum of the United States Air Force there were 10,346 manufactured in the U. S. but this includes the equivalent airframes in manufactured spare parts. Wikipedia puts this number at 10,606.

Widely known as the Stearman, Boeing Stearman or Kaydet, it served as a primary trainer for the USAAF, the USN (as the NS & N2S), and with the RCAF as the Kaydet throughout World War II. After the conflict was over, thousands of surplus aircraft were sold on the civilian market. In the immediate postwar years they became popular as crop dusters, sports planes, and for aerobatic and wing walking use in airshows.

The Kaydet was a conventional biplane of rugged construction with large, fixed tailwheel undercarriage, and accommodation for the student and instructor in open cockpits in tandem. The radial engine was

usually uncowled, although some Stearman operators choose to cowl the engine.

According to a book by Peter Price entitled “Red Baron Stearman Squadron”, the oldest civilian air team in the United States included 5 vintage Stearman biplanes. The Red Baron Squadron was established in 1979 as a promotion for Red Baron Pizza. The squadron flew Stearman biplanes modified with 450 hp engines. A separate 38 foot support vehicle followed with spare parts and engines. They attended airshows throughout the country and flew formation aerobatics. Their base of operations and air museum was at the Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport in Marshall, Minnesota. In 2007, after 28 years of flying, the company announced the retirement of the squadron.

Variants of Stearman biplanes were used all over the world in countries such as Iran, Israel, Peru, Cuba, Canada, Greece, The Republic of China and the Philippines. They were trainers, medical aircraft, crop dusters, mail planes and more.

After World War II, the thousands of PT (primary trainer)-17 Stearman were auctioned off to civilians and former pilots. Many were modified for crop-dusting use, with a hopper for pesticide or fertilizer fitted in place of the front cockpit. Additional equipment included pumps, spray bars, and nozzles mounted below the lower wings. A popular approved modification to increase the maximum takeoff

weight and climb performance involved fitting a larger Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine and a constant speed propeller.

While investigating the Stearman aircraft over the first weekend in September, remember to attend Art in the Park in Standish Park on September 6th. This juried fine art fair is an excellent companion to the Stearman Fly in. This fine art fair featuring painters, sculptors, potters, weavers, basket makers and jewelers as well as food, entertainment and a children’s art project booth is sponsored by the Galesburg Civic Art Center.

On Sunday, September 7th attend the Cardboard Boat Regatta and Galesburg Public Schools Foundation Duck Race. You can see all the different clever designs in the Regatta and even build your own. At the same time, you can adopt a duck and see if you are a lucky winner. There are a number of prices as well as a chance to win $2,000. Sign up at Lake Storey or at one of the adoption centers around Galesburg. The proceeds will benefit our students in Galesburg.

You can follow the Galesburg Area Convention and Visitors Bureau on Face-book, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and at VisitGales-burg.com.

Entrepreneur to Own and Operate Sears Hometown

Store in Galesburg

Galesburg, IL (August 29, 2013) — Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHOS) is providing Galesburg area inves-tors the opportunity to own and operate their own Sears Home-town Store.

"We're looking for a highly-moti-vated member of the Galesburg community who wants to operate a successful business and is customer-service oriented," said Ed Sosniak, Regional Develop-ment Manager for Sears Home-town Stores. Sears Hometown Stores typically occupy between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet of space and offer a wide-selection of top appliance brands such as Kenmore®, Maytag®, KitchenAid®, Whirl-pool®, Bosch®, Frigidaire® and GE®, plus a large assortment of lawn and garden equipment, Craftsman® tools, fitness equipment and mattresses, at guaranteed lowest prices, by the Company’s price match policy. Through in-store kiosks, Sears Hometown Stores are able to offer the local community the full breadth of selection available on Sears.com. "We believe our program is a winner for everyone involved. The owner has a chance to build a successful business, our customers can shop closer to home and our brand reconnects with local consumers."

The local owner is responsible for start-up and on-going operating expenses associated with the store, including: building or leasing a facility, providing in-store fixtures, hiring and training employees, payroll and insurance. school receive tuition-waiver scholarships toward the completion of associate and bachelor's degree programs at Carl Sandburg College and Knox College, respectively.

According to Captain Derek Perry, the Galesburg Fire Department has responded to almost twice the number of burn complaints already this year than it did all of last year. This has also resulted in more tickets for violation of the City’s burning regulations. He states: “We want to put out a friendly reminder to the citizens to help keep them safe. We don’t like writing tickets but more importantly we want people to understand the hazards associated with burning anything other than dry seasoned fire-wood. Many harmful chemicals are produced and released into the air when trash and leaves are burned. Some of these chemicals are toxic to people, animals, and plants. Additionally, failure to maintain proper distances from anything combustible when recreational burning can end in tragedy and that is something we are definitely trying to prevent.”

Recreational fire rules as stipulated in the Galesburg City Code: • There are two types of recreational fires. o Those in an outdoor fireplace or fire pit do not require a permit. o Recreational fires on the ground require a permit from the Galesburg Fire Department provided free of charge.

• Only dry seasoned firewood shall be burned. This means the wood has no greenery (leaves or growth) and may not be longer than 24 inches when used. • Household waste, landscape waste, garbage, refuse, construction waste or materials, or hazardous waste shall not be burned as fuel in any recreational fire. • All outdoor fireplaces shall be constructed of brick, metal, clay, or other non-combustible materials commercially manufactured and specifically designed for the purpose of recreational fires. • Outdoor fireplaces shall have at least five feet of clearance from walls and fencing. They also shall not be placed on combustible landscaping (bark, wood chips or mulch) • Outdoor fire pits are ground level units constructed on-site by the owner/occupant. • Pits shall have a minimum of 10 feet of clearance from the edge of the pit to buildings, property lines or other combustible material. • The opening of the pit shall not exceed two feet. • The sides of the pit shall be enclosed and constructed of bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal, or other non-combustible materials acceptable to the Fire Chief or his designee. The height of the enclosure shall be a minimum of

two feet from grade. • When requesting a permit for fire on the ground, also known as a wiener roast permit, the Galesburg Fire Department will inspect the site and provide you with a copy of the rules and permit. • A garden hose attached to a water supply or other approved fire extinguishing device must be readily available at the location of the recreational fire. • The fire must be attended at all times by a person over 18 years in age. • The fire must be extinguished if it becomes offensive to others or if not under supervision by an adult. • All fires are subject to extinguishment at the direction of the Fire or Police Departments. • Violations of the Recreational Burning Regulations may result in a minimum fine of $75 per occurrence.

If you have any questions or need additional information please contact, the Galesburg Fire De-partment at 309/345-3757.
