Rev. Owen Chandler, Chaplain (CPT) has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM). This medal may be awarded to any member of the Armed Forc-es who distinguishes himself by heroism, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service. The ARCOM can be given for hero-ism in combat or noncombat and for achievement or service during peacetime or wartime.

It's getting to be fall! Of course, a few of you have informed me that it won't get cool until November, but I'm going to choose to ignore that and assume I live in a part of the coun-try that recognizes seasons besides hot and extra hot.

It's fall! Fall means many things to each of us, but we share a few of those - going back to school, tailgating at football games (or maybe basketball? y'all are weird), coming back from summer vacations hopefully more rested than when you went, and getting back into the yearly routine. It also means a lot of us are coming back to church and being wel-comed by old friends and some new faces.

In order to reconnect and reground ourselves, we're putting on a small group series called Arroyos. It will begin Septem-ber 14, and it's a chance to come together and really get to know and share conversations with those in our church fami-ly. The groups will consist of five to seven people, and each week for six weeks different groups will meet at different times. We've staggered the group meetings - one on Sunday night, one on a night during the week, and one during a weekday - so that we can find a slot that will fit your sched-ule.

Please join us and be refreshed and rekindled for the year to come. Some of the best conversations start in a series like this, and I'm excited to see what new friends and what new ideas are made over the next couple of months.

So, I'll see you there! Grace and peace.

    Shelly

Once, while a student minister in Seminary, I confidently chimed in during a Board meeting that the church should change the order of service. There was an uncomfortable silence which seized the room. The Chair promptly told me to go stand in the corner until I was ready to come back to the table and apologize to the church for mentioning the word CHANGE. Now, that story is an exaggeration, but it captures the reality Ive experienced in ministry these last eleven years. Change is difficult. It can be treacherous to those that propose it. It can be alienating to those not prepared for it. I lacked a lot of per-spective early in my ministry. I used to believe that people opposed changes because they didnt care about the future of their church. Over the years, Ive learned the error of those early misconceptions about why people struggle with changes in the church. I need for us all to understand a couple of things: 1. I never change things for the sake of change. Within churches, this is seldom helpful and not worth the gray hair it causes.

    2. All changes we implement are a result of the conditions on the ground and are as thought out as prayerfully possible seeking as much input as possible within the time frames we work.

    3. Change is inevitable and healthy. 4. I know enough to realize each change should be treated as a work in progress. Helpful and con- structive input is always appreciated. Ill listen as long as you are willing to listen as well.

I love this church. I know you love this church. Lets never doubt this about each other.

    Dear Church Family,

For the past several months, as I went through surgery and rehabilitation, I felt blessed to be part of such a loving church family. MANY of you sent cards and notes with loving and caring thoughts, called, brought a home cooked meal and prayed for me too many to personally thank each one of you, but I can assure you that you helped me through some difficult times.

And a special thank you to our ministers. Owen was at the hospital bright and early on the day of the surgery to pray with Frank and me, and he and Shelly visit- ed me during my hospital stays. I thank

God for all of you! You helped bright - ened many long days during this time.

    Love, Jackie Presson

A special thank you to Bill Hanson who has been the coordina-tor for the school supplies for Steele School Project (Backpack Blowout). He collected all the donations, delivered them to the school and has followed up with any additional needs the children of the school might have. We appreciate his willing-ness to do this very important mission project of Saguaro. Bonnie Logan Moderator

  • National Benevolent Association XPLOR Program

NBA is initiating a faith-based, 10-month Residency for 21-to 30-year-olds who want to consider lives of care and service. Through XPLOR, they will partner young adults with Disciples congregations and their communities impacting neighborhoods, congregations and the young adults.

There are four cornerstones of the XPLOR program: Hands-on Service/Justice Work: Working in and among neighborhoods to empower local mission efforts while gaining

awareness of systems of injustice Simple Living in Community: Learning and practicing faithful, intentionally simple and culturally competent communal

living Spiritual Discernment on Vocation: Striving through spiritual disciplines to discern the purpose for which ones soul is

made Disciples Leadership Development: Living out ones Disciples identity and unleashing ones leadership capacity

Residents live under one roof with a diverse community of peers, where they engage in communal and personal spiritual prac-tices ranging from prayer to simple daily meals together. They care for and learn from others in community-service internship and they relate to a host congregation. The participants will experience four days of learning/experience in Service Site, time set aside for personal and collective spiritual reflection, free time for personal care and about six hours a week serving with the Host Congregation.

XPLOR candidates include young adults who want their lives to make a difference but they may not be certain what steps to take in that direction. Maybe they have finished an undergraduate degree, but classroom education wasnt enough to make their path clear. Maybe they are feeling a call to ministry of one sort or another, but going to seminary or pursuing a not-for-profit or social work degree seems premature. Maybe they started work right out of high school and they want a restart that affords time to really consider how they want to engage in the world. They have one thing in common: they need some focused time to figure our their wisest way forward. The program gives preference to Disciples candidates and will welcome others as space permits.

Residents do not pay for their time in XPLOR. Houses are set up to allow Residents to live modestly on a monthly stipend and complementary housing/utilities for the Host Congregation. Residents are encouraged to receive no other funding from fami-ly or friends.

Are you interested in learning more about XPLOR? Visit www.nbacares.org/xplor.

THIRD QUARTER APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR BRADY OUTREACH GRANTS

Through the generosity of Allan and Marie Brady, a number of endowment funds were created in 2006. One of these is Creative Ministries for Outreach. These grants are awarded in areas including neighborhood, community, world/global, Basic Mission Finance, new church development and ideas which are beyond the scope of our own church development. Requests should be able to show a measurable impact. Preference will be given to start-up/seed projects as opposed to sustaining, ongoing projects. Requests must be submitted on official application forms which are available in the church office and must be returned no later than October 1, 2014. Awards will then be made for the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2014. Questions may be directed to Sharon Jensen at: [email protected]

  • Childrens and Youth Fellowship

Childrens Ministry is excited to announce the kick-off on September 7 for Childrens Fellowship and Youth Fellowship! These two new programs are designed to provide a meaningful Sunday morning experience for SCCs children and youth.

Childrens Fellowship will meet Sundays from 10:00 - 10:50 in room 5. Kids ages 4 years - 4th grade are invit-ed to participate in this time centered around fellowship, learning and developing their faith, and having fun! We will start each morning with singing and the telling of a Bible story that connects with their Worship and Wonder lesson. Then, the kids will be able to choose from a variety of activities that will help them to connect to the Bible story. These activities will give kids the opportunity to engage in fellowship, make lasting friendships, and have fun developing social skills.

Youth Fellowship will also meet on Sunday mornings, from 10:00 - 10:50, in room 2. The youth will work to-gether to prepare and cook a simple breakfast to eat, and will have meaningful discussions about the way their faith intersects with their lives. They will explore diverse topics and encourage each other in their spir-itual growth.

As with all aspects of our childrens ministry, we cant make this possible without support from you! Volunteering is easy. As a class co-leader, all material is prepared for you, and each activity is child-directed. All you need is a willing heart, and to arrive at 9:45 to set up. We would also invite you to prepare a small snack for the children or a simple breakfast for the youth. We invite anyone who is interested in volunteering or in learn- ing more about these exciting new program to contact Judy Dunn, Emily Chandler, or Laurie Cleveland.

    Trunk or Treat!

    Save the Date!

    Trunk or Treat will be

on Halloween night, 6:00 - 8:00. We are

already on the look-out for people to hand

    out candy from the

trunks of their cars, as well as volunteers f

    or games and food.

Watch for more announcements in the upc

  • Saguaro Infant Care and Preschool News

Psst! Can you spare a minute? Saguaro Infant Care and Preschool needs volunteers from our church family and, working with our Quality First Coach, we have generated a list of possibilities: We need someone who will inspect the classrooms and see that the paint on the walls is repaired as needed

( part of1 day every two weeks). We need to have someone check in the rooms for Ones through Preschool to be sure that blocks (not connec-

tive toys) are available and have accessories (cars, people, animals) nearby. ( part of 1 day each month). We need a bibliotherapist who will help maintain the books in all the rooms. This would include collecting

damaged books, using book tape, and the willingness to throw away heavily damaged books (no matter how cute) and giving the Director a list of discarded books for replacement or substitution. ( part of 1 day a week)

We need someone to inventory and report on dramatic play equipment which includes dolls, dollhouses, kitchens and accessories, and dress-up clothes. (part of one day 1 time each month).

We need green thumbs to plant and maintain the planter boxes outside rooms 5 and 6. We need people to share their talents: to teach a game, to do an art project, to read a book, to rock a baby, to

be a friend to a child and to our Staff members. These gifts can be self-paced or a regular part of your routine. Help us in our work toward Quality First goals or just because we are, and have been (for years) a wonderful Ministry for Tucson families. Contact Martha Lee McKiernan if you can help or want clarification.

Rev. Chandler, I would like to take the time to thank you for allowing Pima Commu-nity College (PCC) to offer an Early Childhood class at Saguaro Chris-tian Infant Care and Preschool. Tanima and her staff were very professional and accommodating to the students and me. I was very impressed with the guidance and leadership Tanima demonstrates toward the staff. The level of com-mitment her staff has shown in furthering their education is refresh-ing. It was a pleasure to have some of them in class and have them share their knowledge and experiences. Martha Lee McKiernan has worked with me in the past to help guide their education and was a welcome addition to the class as well. You are very blessed to have such a strong and passionate group of early care and education pro-fessionals at your center. As a member of the Early Childhood profession and adjunct faculty at PCC, I look forward to seeing them in the future at educational events and in more Early Childhood Studies classes. Again, thank you for this opportunity and I look forward to working with you and the staff at the center in the future. Sincerely, Donna Cohn PCC DV CDA Program Director

Upcoming Bible Studies You may notice Brown Bag Bible Series and Chips, Salsa and Scrip-ture on the calendar. These will be two different studies beginning in September. The Brown Bag Bible Series will take place here at Saguaro at noon on Thursdays. Chips, Salsa and Scripture will begin either Thursday, September 25 or Thursday, October 2 dependent up-on the weather. This class will meet at 6:30 at Casa Molina. Watch for more information on these two opportunities.
