DEAN’ S LETTER Dear York Chapter Members, The York Chapter, American Guild of Organists is now beginning its 77th year. The Officers and Executive Board members of the Chapter have been meeting regularly during the summer to schedule, arrange and plan the monthly meetings and programs for the Chapter. In addition, the Board has now adopted the York Chapter’s Operating Procedures to better reflect our current structure and needs. . Welcome new members of the Chapter and to returning or lapsed members. They include Jeffrey Cogan and Todd Davis. Two of our student members, Layton Graves and Daniel Rothermel recently performed in recital for the Harrisburg Chapter AGO, Shenk Scholarship recital. Both students received the Shenk organ scholarship which provided summer organ instruction. Layton studies with York Chapter member Richard Frey and Daniel studies with me. Layton and Daniel both gave stellar performances. Congratulations to these talented student members. I encourage you to attend our meetings and programs this year. Some highlights include a September dinner meeting with our new Region III Councilor, a November organ recital at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, York with organist Douglas Bruce of Switzerland, a February symphony concert featuring the Saint-Saëns “Organ” Symphony at the Strand-Capitol with the York Symphony Orchestra and myself at the organ and more programs at St. Matthew Lutheran featuring the new French Symphonic style Cavaille-Coll inspired organ. I hope that you will participate and become involved with the meetings of the York Chapter, AGO. We look forward to seeing you soon.

THANK YOU! , York AGO, Thank you so much for helping me get to this year’s Pipe Organ Encounter Advanced in Bloomington Indiana! I had a wonderful week of workshops, lessons, and recitals! I had two outstanding teachers throughout the week, Dr. Carole Terry and Dr. David Schrader, who worked with me on my technique, practice habits, and musicianship. My favorite part of the week was watching the 1920’s Phantom of the Opera silent film accompanied by the large Fisk organ in Auer Hall. It was fantastic! Afterwards, we toured the organ’s pipe chambers and saw how the mechanical action worked. I also was allowed to attend workshops on many different topics including improvisation, hymn playing, and practice techniques. My week at IU was unforgettable! I loved talking to all of the faculty and my fellow students. I could not have had a better week! Thank you for helping me attend this camp and for always supporting me in all of my endeavors! -Layton Graves

Friends and Colleagues, I have received word that our oldest chapter member Esther Hamme is now home after recovering from a serious fall. Esther broke several bones in her neck and had been in York Health South Rehab hospital for many weeks. Esther is a long-time AGO member and former newsletter editor and archivist. The Chapter honored her last Fall for her outstanding contributions to the Chapter. While Esther has retired from organ playing, she continues to renew her AGO membership. I am sure she would appreciate receiving any get well wishes with cards or calls. Esther L. Hamme 2239 Linden Rd. York, PA 17408 H:717-764-4818

Page 9 Volume 10 Issue 1 AGO NATIONAL COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW MISSION STATEMENT NEW YORK CITY—The AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS (AGO) announces a newly adopted mission statement, which was approved by the AGO National Council at its July 2012 meeting in Nashville. The new mission statement begins with a succinct, memorable statement that focuses on how the AGO makes a difference in the world. It is followed by a list of goals that help define how the mission will be accomplished. The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. To achieve this, we: •Encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; •Inspire, educate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; •Provide networking, fellowship, and mutual support; •Nurture future generations of organists; •Promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles; and •Engage wider audiences with organ and choral music. “The new mission focuses on more than just serving the needs of dues-paying members,” declared AGO Executive Director James Thomashower. “This is a mission that gives the work of the Guild meaning in the context of our society.” The Guild’s prior mission statement was developed early in 1998. Over the last three years, the AGO National Council and various task forces have reviewed AGO members’ responses to a long-range planning questionnaire to determine what is most important to members and consider afresh what the Guild should plan to achieve organizationally. In 2011, a task force was formed to develop a new mission statement. Members of the task force were AGO Councillor for Region IX Leslie Wolf Robb, Director; AGO Treasurer Calvert Johnson; AGO Councillor for Region VI Jan Kraybill; and AGO President Eileen Guenther (ex officio). The task force drafted three mission statement options and asked AGO members to complete an online survey in April 2012. Based upon the responses of Guild members, the AGO National Council endorsed the new mission statement to challenge, energize, and equip AGO members to continue and expand the work of the Guild both now and in the years to come. “The Strategic Planning Workbook for Nonprofit Organizations defines a mission statement as ‘What you intend to accomplish, your organization’s overall goal, the reason you exist’,” stated AGO President Eileen Guenther. “Other books on leadership define it as what an organization can do uniquely—better than any other organization. Not-for-profit organizations must revisit their mission statements periodically to be sure they reflect current environmental realities as well as the organization’s current needs and objectives.”
