Our first Grand Body Meeting (GBM) was a wild success. Held in Thurston, about a hundred freshmen showed up to learn more about the student org and pay dues. They learned from Chairman Alex Miller want CR does and how to get involved. Bonus points to anyone who can spot the future freshmen rep in the picture!

Joe grew up in the City of Philadelphia but unlike the prevalent trend of the youth in his city he has been involved in

conservative politics since his freshman year of high school. Throughout his years in Philadelphia, Joe worked in a State Representative's office, campaigned for Mitt Romney, and served on the Philadelphia Youth Commission. Joe is an

Eagle Scout who is passionate about the outdoors. His hobbies include shooting, hiking and mountain

climbing.  Through the GW College Republicans, Joe looks forward to strengthening the conservative presence on

campus, bringing together the conservatives of the freshman class, and working to support the GW community as a whole.

Andrew Falacci is the latest generation of GW College Republicans Representatives. Growing up on Cape Cod Massachusetts and being

raised in the sea air, he has an innate love for sailing and the ocean, but has always branched his activities and interests far out. Some of his most profound interests are golf, tennis, horseback, and water sports. Whether it be scuba diving in underground caves or cruising above the waves on a

fly-board Falacci always tries to juice the most out of life. Away from his time working for the College Republicans Falacci

coaches sailing at his yacht club. a graduated from Barnstable High School where he was a two-sport varsity athlete, as well as Student Body

President, and an envoy to the Town of Barnstable School Committee. However, Andrew did not only study in the Barnstable School District.

He spent two years in the early part of high school studying at an international school in Puerto Aventuras Mexico.

Falacci was interested in politics from a young age. He was forged into being the conservative he is today because he wanted to separate himself

from the strong and phony liberalism he found around him in Massachusetts. Now he wants to continue the journey with the GW

College Republicans. Throughout his life Falacci has lived by the notion that you only get out of life what you put into it. “The world, like the sea, is always churning

with new energy and it is rewarding to dive in and be a part of it.”

BE GLAD WE HAVE A CONSTITUTION

Alex Pollock People are quick to belittle the Constitution as an obsolete document from another era. They will complain that it is used by some of those in power to limit the effectiveness and reach of the government. They will say that it is corrupted because it originally considered a slave to only be 3/5 of a man, didn’t give women the right to vote, established the Electoral College, and only allowed land-owning males to be active in politics. Despite these criticisms, “They” fail to recognize the invaluable protections that our constitution affords us in preventing the government from over stepping its bounds. Quite recently the power of the constitution was tested. In one week the constitution’s limitations on government power were broken, as it was revealed that the IRS used its power to investigate political groups linked to the Tea Party, and the Justice Department hacked the phones of several reporters at the Associated Press and one reporter at Fox News. The ongoing investigations will tell what role, if any, the Obama administration played in facilitating these abuses of government power. During the ensuing investigation many will try to jump to conclusions, and pin these scandals solely on the shoulders of President Obama; I, on the other hand, feel inclined to be thankful that there is an

ongoing investigation. The Constitution did its job this time. These events have highlighted the importance of our constitution’s ability to act as a watchdog in the face of abuses of power. The IRS scandal’s targeting of conservative political groups is a clear and direct violation of the first amendment, because it is attempting to limit political speech via heavily scrutinized tax investigations that are unique to political groups that share a common ideology. Moreover, the justice department’s wiretapping of reporters from the Associated Press for over two months is in direct conflict with the 4th amendment and the 1st amendment. Although the constitution didn’t prevent these specific invasions of privacy and free speech, it has indeed raised a red flag that will try and prevent future instances of overstepping by the U.S. government. The essence of the Constitution is that it outlines expectations for the people, so that they know what their government can and cannot do. Whenever one of these expectations is broken the people and their subsequent representatives in the Congress should respond to punish those responsible, or establish a law that protects the people from further incursions in the future. Because the United States has a clear cut Bill of Rights compared to most other countries, it is a reality check for the people, so they know that their government has infringed upon their rights

When these limitations on power aren’t clearly defined it becomes very easy to fall down the slippery slope and into the path of tyranny. This flaw isn’t unique to the left or the right; it is a flaw of human nature. People thrive on power, and it is easy to lose yourself in your own quest to shape the country into your vision. It is important to remind all leaders, conservative and liberal, that they are not kings, despots, or dictators. They may do as they choose in so far as they do not violate these sacred rights that we have all agreed shall never be disregarded. If the events of the past month highlight anything, it is that no government is perfect, the Constitution’s first sentence admits that. Governments consistently “break the rules”, but when that happens be glad that our rules are clear, concise, and to the point, because the rights that the founders valued are just as relevant today as they were in 1787.

FOR YOUNG AMERICANS, KAREN HANDEL IS RIGHT

CHOICE FOR SENATEChris Chaney

Fearless. Tenacious. Unwavering. Karen Handel personifies these words. Steadfast in her conservative beliefs, Karen has a track record of balancing budgets, curbing corruption, streamlining government, cutting government spending, and standing up for life. Karen has the experience—and guts—to take on Washington...

FOR YOUNG AMERICANS, KAREN HANDEL IS RIGHT CHOICE FOR SENATE Con’t.

...DC and force the government to start acting in the best interests of young Americans. It’s no secret that young Americans have been hit hardest by Obama’s liberal crusade and an out-of-control government. Plagued by anemic job growth, college students struggle to find jobs after graduation. Many settle for an unpaid internship—the lucky ones get a stipend to cover the commute—or retreat to the security of mom and dad’s basement while they wait tables or bag groceries. Young Americans want to work, we want to pay our own way, but we need jobs. And being an Obamacare navigator just isn’t going to cut it. Karen understands how government spurs job growth: it gets out of the way. As a management executive and the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce CEO, Karen learned how government regulation and red tape adversely affect businesses. While Chair of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Karen closed a $100 million budget gap—without one cent in new taxes. Karen’s “no new taxes” approach stimulated job growth. She kept her commitment to taxpayers when she fired a corrupt Sheriff after millions of dollars of county funds went missing.

As Georgia’s Secretary of State, Karen wasted no time restructuring the office; streamlining permitting and licensing processes and saving tax-payer dollars from going to waste. Her elimination of needless bureaucratic hurdles allowed businesses to focus on creating jobs and not filling out government paperwork. When Susan G. Komen for the Cure caved to political pressure and restored funding to Planned Parenthood, Karen resigned her executive position and abandoned her six-figure salary. Karen held firm to her pro-life convictions and took a bold stand for the lives of millions of unborn children. Karen’s top three opponents will sound off on all the conservative talking-points, checking-off the boxes as they go down the list. But talk is cheap. These three men have a combined record of 42 years in Congress. Willingly or not, they had a hand in creating the fiscal mess in which America has found herself. They’re guilty by association, and now they want a promotion. Typical. Many conservatives bemoan the revolving door between the Capitol and K Street, but what about the revolving door between both houses of Congress? How is this any better? It’s time for a change. It’s time for someone new. Young Americans deserve a leader who will fight to restore common sense to Washington. A leader who will end the “pass it now, pay it later” mentality. My

generation faces the horrid task of paying for the reckless and irresponsible spending habits of the last twenty-odd years. America’s future—our future—remains bleak and stagnate under the weight of never-ending government debt. The time has come for young Americans to demand a leader who understands the immorality of Washington’s spending habits; a leader with a strong track record of fiscal responsibility. Karen Handel is that leader.Karen will champion limited government, the repeal of Obamacare, a balanced budget, and less government spending. She will fight for liberty by supporting the 4th Amendment and not the NSA. She will fight for jobs by cutting taxes. She will serve with the heart of a humble servant, not as a greedy power-player looking to make her next move. As Georgia’s next U.S. Senator, Karen Handel will steer America on a better path and ensure that young Americans meet our rendezvous with destiny.

MORE GUNS EQUALS LESS CRIMES

Andrew Desiderio “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”— Thomas Jefferson

MORE GUNS EQUALS LESS CRIMES Con’t

...People laugh when I tell them the founding fathers gave us the right to bear arms in order to protect ourselves against tyrannical government. The truth is, the founders realized that if a country’s citizens did not have the right to bear arms, it would not be able to rebel against a tyrannical government similar to the one they experienced pre-Revolutionary War with Great Britain. Besides the philosophical argument, I’d like to explore the facts and statistics of the argument. As the gun debate rages on in Washington, D.C., and around the country, I took it upon myself to validate my opinions with statistics. I am about to prove fewer guns means more violent crime and more guns means less violent crime. Here we go. Many gun-control advocates, such as CNN’s Piers Morgan, like to cite Great Britain’s gun murder rate, as compared to that of the United States, when attempting to advance their beliefs. It is true that the number of gun murders in Great Britain is significantly fewer than that of the United States. Throughout the 20th century, Britain enacted strict gun laws, leading up to 1997 when all guns were essentially outlawed.

So Britain’s crime rate must be really low since it banned guns, right? Not a chance. According to a report released jointly by the European Union and the United Nations, Great Britain is the most-violent country in the world. The report states the UK has 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens, which is the highest rate in the world. That figure has skyrocketed ever since guns were banned in that nation. In fact, in the four years after the 1997 ban, the violent crime rate more than doubled. Therefore, in Great Britain, ever since guns have been outlawed, violent crime has surged to the highest rate in the world. So to validate the first part of my equation, it is indeed true that fewer guns leads to more violent crime. Now, let’s tackle the second part of my equation. According to the aforementioned report by the EU and U.N., the United States has a violent crime rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 citizens. But that was in 2009. According to the most recent FBI statistics for the year 2011, the U.S. had 386.3 violent crimes per 100,000 citizens. Keep in mind that the UK’s rate is 2,034 per 100,000.Not only is America’s violent crime rate incredibly low, it has decreased by 49 percent since 1992, in which there were 757.7

violent crimes per 100,000 citizens. The murder rate in the United States during that same period has also decreased by 49 percent, going from 9.3 per 100,000 in 1992 to 4.7 per 100,000 in 2011. And what happened in terms of gun circulation between 1992 and 2011? In 1992, there were 192 million firearms in circulation in the U.S. In 2011, there were 310 million firearms in circulation. Both statistics are according to the U.S. Department of Justice. So to recap: Between 1992 and 2011, in the United States, when 118 million more guns were put into circulation, violent crime decreased by 49 percent and the murder rate decreased by 49 percent. Therefore, beyond rational dispute, more guns means less crime. One can also say more guns in circulation makes us all safer. People can argue or disagree with me, but I have the facts on my side. Unfortunately, the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy has been exploited by gun control advocates in order to advance their agenda. They are acting as if gun violence is an “epidemic,” when that is the furthest thing from the truth. Guns cannot be considered an epidemic when they have made us safer over the past 20 years and have been the reason for the significant drop in...

...violent crime and murder in this country. These advocates have used solely emotion in their arguments, suggesting anyone who disagrees with them hates children or wants more people murdered. This really shows the intellectual weakness and policy ineffectiveness of their argument.
