Don Palm said the trick in life is to get paid to do what
you love to do. As an educator, he is doing what he
loves with the West Sacramento Center for the Los
Rios Community College system. The Center began in
the early 1990’s in West Sacramento. The new Center
on Capital Avenue opened January 2010. The Center
offers general education classes that can be
transferred to a 4-year university; career and
technical education; full services (counseling,
registration, financial aid, and job searching);
outreach to high schools. It is also a part of the Yolo County and the
City of West Sacramento. The Center draws people from throughout
the region. The center has a very diverse population by ethnicity and
nearly 50% of those enrolled are first generation college students. The
Center is looking forward to expanding both in physical space and in
programs. A big goal is to increase the number of students eligible to
transferring to the UC system. In addition, the Center wants to expand
it’s cooperation with UC Davis and the West Sacramento Unified
School District. The only significant issue with the Center is parking.
The city has helped by increasing parking in the area. In addition, the
Center is located directly by the Yolobus, transit center.
President Mike Campbell recognized our two key members who keep the Club functioning; Treasurer, Chris Bradford and Secretary, Randy Carlson. Chris is proud of the club’s contributions back to the community, and Randy enjoys delivering Meals on Wheels.

VOCATIONAL CORNER
By Drew Gidlof, Vocational Service
This week’s vocational corner article is the
first of a two part series featuring two
Rotarians who hold the honor of being
father and son Rotarians.
Tom Wallace started out after college
graduation with what is now Caltrans but
decided to change professions after 4 years.
He returned to Georgia Tech and obtained a masters degree in
civil engineering, majoring in soil mechanics. After 21 years with
a local Sacramento firm he and a partner formed Wallace Kuhl
in West Sacramento. Soon, soil engineering became geotechnical
engineering, allowing them to charge more for their services
because no one knew what that word meant but figured it must
be important. The scope of services includes testing of all
construction materials and processes along with soil conditions
for support of structures. In the late 1980’s environmental
engineering became the rage as everyone thought the world had
to be cleaned up to restore its “pristine” condition. So they
added that field to their scope of services. Tom had been
delighted that there is an almost unlimited supply of soil to test.
When he found out that air testing was to be added to their scope
of services he was blown away, as there is even more air than soil.
Tom was brought into Rotary by Bill Merwin, who was a farmer,
so both of them had found out how to make a living with dirt.
John Raney is in the same line of work as Tom was and they
worked together for a short time years ago.

Future Rotarian:
Lily He
Lily He is a graduating senior of Class of
2014. She has been a member of Interact for
two years. This year, Lily will be the club
president. Lily has chaired the Halloween
Carnival and the Reading Buddies Program. This year she
will continue to chair these programs, along with the guest
speakers' meetings. Lily is striving to attend Stanford
University. This has been her dream school for years. She
is interested in being a designer; either of biotechnology or
as an architect. Lily has dedicated her effort into making
Interact stronger by organizing the system more effectively,
recruiting more new members, and expanding the club’s
activities. Lily believes that better communication with
other members is essential to providing Interact a stronger
base. She has helped develop leadership skills of younger
classmates. By shadowing Kimberly for this past year and
experiencing a week at RYLA Camp, Lily has matured as a
leader. She will continue to make more improvements to
the club. Lily’s favorite moments are the Halloween
Carnival and the Spring Carnival. Those times are when
most members sign up for community service together.
