Why September? For many Americans, September 11th is remembered as one of the most tragic, devastating events that ever happened on our nation’s soil. Without hesitation, first responders charged head first into the danger zone to save lives of people they did not know.

Firefighters are an integral part of our community, protecting our lives, properties and businesses.

The month of September is now dedicated to not just honoring and paying respect to these extraordinary men and women, but celebrating them!

We’re extending the opportunity for your business to #thankafirefighter during Firefighter Appreciation Month campaign.

What is Firefighter Appreciation Month?A month dedicated to acknowledging our heroic California Firefighters. Local, statewide, boutique and nationwide businesses will participate by hosting an event or activity, or by offering a specialty item to raise funds for the California Fire Foundation.

Firefighter Appreciation Month isn’t just a fundraising month-long event, but also an ongoing awareness campaign.

Leadership TeamIn order to best fulfill its mission, the California Fire Foundation is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors, consisting entirely of active-duty or retired firefighters.

Lou Paulson is President of California Professional Firefighters (CPF), representing more than 30,000 front-line first responders statewide. As president of the state’s largest and most recognized firefighter organization, Lou has helped build the profession even as he has worked to protect its members.

Lou’s leadership in the fire service is formed by a career of nearly three decades, most of which was spent as a front-line firefighter with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. Lou eventually rose to the rank of captain, and served several terms as president of Contra Costa County Firefighters Local 1230. He retired as a captain in 2011. As CPF president, Lou co-sponsors the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) – a national model for public safety apprenticeship training and a force for building a stronger, more diverse fire service. Lou also presides over the California Fire Foundation -- a non-profit foundation that built and maintains the California Firefighters Memorial in Sacramento’s Capitol Park.

In his community, Lou has served on the Diablo Fire Safe Council and the Los Medanos College Fire Science Advisory Committee. He has received numerous commendations for his service to the labor and fire service communities, and has also been recognized for his promotion of firefighter fundraising on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Notable Foundation ProgramsCALIFORNIA FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIALThe Foundation designed, built and maintains a unique memorial to fallen firefighters at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Every year, the Foundation holds a special ceremony to commemorate the bravery of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. To view a video from the 2016 California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony, where Governor Brown spoke in commemoration of the lives of 29 fallen firefighters who recently died in the line of duty, please click here.

FIREFIGHTERS AND THEIR FAMILIESThe Foundation supplies emergency support to departments and families of firefighters killed in the line of duty, while also providing educational assistance to the children of fallen firefighters through the California Firefighters Endowment and Daniel A. Terry Scholarship program. To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in Daniel A. Terry Scholarship assistance. Click here for an overview of the Daniel A. Terry College Scholarship program.

VICTIM ASSISTANCEThe Foundation’s Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency (SAVE) program provides immediate financial assistance to victims of fire and disaster in California. Working with firefighters throughout the state, the Foundation offers $100 gift cards to individuals and families, right on-scene of an incident, where there has been more than 25 percent loss in a fire or natural disaster. To date, SAVE has enabled over 4,200 victims struck by tragedy to instantly purchase basic necessities such as food, medicine or clothing. Corporate support has been provided by Chevron, Inc. The goal is to expand the program into all communities in California and ultimately increase the value on the cards.

COMMUNITY EDUCATIONThe Foundation offers information about fire safety and conducts public outreach and education about fire safety issues through its Firefighters on Your Side program. Additionally, the Foundation contributes to other organizations that aim to enhance and improve the communities of California.

The Foundation is the only organization in California providing these essential services and programs for firefighters, their families and our communities. Less than 20 percent of funds raised go to administrative/overhead costs, meaning that more than 80 percent of funds raised go directly to these valuable programs.
