Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

A man recently gave us a sizeable check and asked that the money be used to help people with utility bills. He was concerned that, while justified, we were spending so much money on rent that there were people who might go without electricity or other utilities because there was just not enough money to go around. We gratefully took him up on his offer. A two month electric bill was paid for a 49-year-old man who was out of work after quadruple bypass surgery. With no medical insurance and no paid sick leave, his wife’s $10/hour job barely paid the rent, meaning utilities had to go by the wayside while he recuperated. A woman who had recently taken in her abandoned infant niece and toddler nephew was devastated when her husband was arrested. Without his income, and newly saddled with children requiring childcare, she was at a loss as to how to pay rent and utilities. We paid her electric and gas bill, thanks to the man’s donation, and used our funds for her rent. We also advised her on how to get assistance with childcare so that she could find a job to support them until her husband was released. A 79-year-old woman, living on $650/month on Social Security income had a recent rent increase – her rent is now $600/month. She paid what little she could on her electric bill, using local food pantries for food, but she continued to fall behind and was facing disconnection. We happily brought her rent current. We remind everyone that when you make a donation to Helping Hands, and have a specific desire on how you want that donation used, we will do everything in our power to honor your request. Since we are an all-volunteer organization with no paid salaries, you can be assured that none of the money you donate to us will be spent on anything or anyone other than those people you want to reach…the poor of Midland. We are your servants…your arms in reaching out to the poor of Midland. Thank you for the honor of serving our neighbors in need through you!
