“S-219 Firing Operations”

Information

Dates: September 9-10th

Time: 0800-1700

Location: Kimberly, TBD

Course Description:

This course was developed using a blended approach to learning, meaning that it contains a mix of

online and instructor-led training (ILT). Students are required to complete the online training portion

of the course prior to submitting for certification. The course introduces the roles and responsibilities

of a firing boss (FIRB) and outlines duties of other personnel who may engage firing operations. The

course discusses and illustrates common firing devices and techniques. Although comprehensive in

nature, the course work is not a substitute for the dynamic fire environment. The course provides

students with important information regarding general tasks required to be successful. Any

opportunity to show students a real ignition or demonstrate the use of an actual firing device will assist

in transferring these new concepts and skills to the job. There is an optional field day outlined in the

course, it is the discretion of the delivery unit to include the field day, however, if logistically feasible

it is suggested by NWCG that a field day be conducted.

Maximum Class: 20 students

Required Gear:

o Pen and paper

Instructor:

o Justin Kidd- Eastern Area Fire Services Coordinator, Idaho Dept. of Lands

The class will cover short and long stretches, equipment and layout considerations, options on going vertical, and culminate with full speed single and multi-company drills. Students should expect to work up a sweat, polish up on a few skills already mastered, and walk away with a few new skills and ideas to take back to their departments, no matter what the size or staffing. avid rock climber since 1991, is a former member of Seattle Mountain Rescue Team, and a former

member of the Washington State FEMA USAR Task Force. For nearly 10 years, Matt was employed by

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation (manufacturers of quality rescue and climbing equipment)

involved in new product design, quality control and engineering. Matt left his position as an

Engineering Manager with SMC when he became a firefighter. He has been a presenter at the

International Technical Rescue Symposium. Matt's unique background in various levels of special

operations brings an incredible amount of technical knowledge to our team.

S-219 Firing Operations:

Justin D. Kidd- Justin is currently the Eastern Area Fire Services Coordinator for the Idaho Dept. of

Lands. He has spent 21 years in wildland fire management, including leadership positions with the

Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service and Idaho Dept. of Lands. He has spent a majority of

his career serving as a Crew Boss and Engine Captain for the Dubois Ranger District on the Targhee

National Forest in SE Idaho, an Assistant Center Manager at the East Idaho Interagency Fire Center

and as the Fuels AFMO on the north zone of the Targhee National Forest. Justin has been a wildland

firefighting instructor for 14 years instructing Federal, State and Municipal departments. His focus is

on the fundamental aspects of fighting wildland fire and helping others to develop a better

understanding of the natural and human factors that affect how we make choices and perform as

firefighters.

Master of Engines:

James Greenwood – Born and raised in Colorado, James started work on a type VI engine for the US Forest Service, graduated to an Interagency Hotshot Crew for the National Park Service, and culminated his wildland career with Post-Grad work as a Smokejumper for the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Somewhere in between he graduated from undergraduate school and law school, passing the State Bar of Nevada in 2008. He joined the dark side of structural firefighting via the Santa Fe Fire Department in New Mexico, before his Boise-native better-half put her foot down. He now rides in the backseat of an engine on the Boise Bench, and believes his varied professional and academic background allow him special insight into what good training looks like, and every once in a while, he manages to avoid being the bad example everyone else learns from.

Ben Gira - Originally from the outskirts of Chicago, Ben migrated out West in 2009 and began his fire service career digging ditches for the Forest Service and BLM. He currently rides backwards for the Boise Fire Department. He continually strives to increase clarity on the fire ground through hard work andtraining.

Fire Training

"We don't rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training" -Archilochus

Joe Lunghofer - Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Joe joined the Marine Corps in 2002. After his enlistment he worked as a government contractor for the Department of Defense. Joe then began his career with The Bureau of Land Management in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has worked for the Boise Fire Department since 2012 and is assigned to a truck company in southeast Boise.

Chris Hendershot - Chris started his career in the fire service in 1999 after he joined the Air Force and was assigned to an ARFF team. After 10 years, multiple deployments and a few structure fires, he left the Air Force and attended Boise State University and Idaho State University. After working on an ambulance long enough to figure out how not to kill someone, he was fortunate enough to be hired by Boise Fire. During the Boise Fire Recruit Academy and subsequent trainings he realized that the words ‘You don’t know that you don’t know’ are very real. Riding backwards on some of the busiest engine companies in Boise has allowed Chris the opportunity to better himself and others every tour.

Tim Raymond - Tim was raised between Chicago and Utah and started his fire service career in the Salt Lake Valley in 2010. He received a Fire Science degree from Utah Valley University and is a graduate of the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. Tim took his backseat attitude to Boise in 2013 and has instructed at the department, county, and state levels. He is a member of Local 149, Treasure Valley Fools, and Boise Fire Nuggets. Tim enjoys spending his free time traveling...for training and fun.
