1.0 OBSERVATIONS

1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status

Four slope inclinometers and three pneumatic piezometers were read at the S2 – Priddis site on Hwy 22:14, on May 21, 2008 by Mr. Bryan Bale of AMEC Earth and Environmental (AMEC), a division of AMEC Americas Limited. The SI’s were read using an imperial Slope Indicator probe and Digitilt Datamate readout manufactured by Durham Geo Slope Indicator (DGSI). Inclinometer reading depths were referenced to the top of the SI casing, except for SI #9 and #11, which were referenced to the ground surface. The SI’s and piezometers at the site were installed to monitor the effectiveness of a pile wall and dewatering pumps installed to remediate past slope instablility. Please refer to Figure S2-1 attached in Section D for site layout and instrument locations. Figure S2-2 illustrates the location of the instruments that remain operational at the site. At the time of the readings there were four SI’s and three piezometers functioning at this site At the time of the Spring 2008 instrument readings, extensive cracking was noted along the pile wall along the downslope side of the road. It also appeared that some undermining of the pavement along the downslope edge of the road had occurred due to water infiltrating into the cracks and washing out the road bed material.

Alberta Transportation Instrumentation Monitoring Results Southern Region Site S2 – Highway 22:14, Priddis September 5, 2008 2.0 INTERPRETATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

2.1 General

Plots of the SI and piezometer data are presented in Section D and are summarized in the following sections. Where applicable, the resultant movement has also been plotted.

2.2 Zones of Movement

No new zones of movement have been noted since the last reading in September 2007. Zones of previous movement and historical results are summarized in Table S2-1.

2.3 Interpretation of Monitoring Results and Recommendations

2.3.1 Interpretation

Plots of the instrument readings from the Priddis site are included in Section D. A summary of each of the SI readings is presented below. Due to the resetting of the initial data sets to the Spring 2000 values, previously identified movement zones that are being tracked are also noted. AMEC BH#2 (Figures S2-3 to S2-7) The data from previous readings of this SI showed downslope and cross-slope

movement in a zone between approximately 5.3 m and 6.6 m depth. Due to continuing slope movement, the probe has not been able to pass below approximately 6.5 m since the Fall 2005 readings. From the fall of 2005 to the spring of 2008, the readings have been taken to a depth of 6.3 to 7.0 m. The instrument was not read in May 2008 since the zone above 6.3 m has not shown movement. When referring to Figures S2-3 to S2-7, please note that the plot of any given data set after May 2005 is valid only above the reading depths noted above.

This SI is no longer useful for measuring displacement since any movement

detected above the blockage at 6.3 m is relative to a moving reference point. Any noted movement above this zone would not include the movement rate of the reference point and would be inaccurate.

SI #4 (Figures S2-8 and S2-9) The SI was found blocked at 1.5 m depth and the planned reading could not be

completed to full depth. On June 19th, 2008 a tape measure was able to pass below 1.5 m, therefore it is thought that the blockage was likely due to ice. The SI will be read in the fall and some water will be removed to reduce the risk of ice blockage occurring again.

Page 3: September 5, 2008 - transportation.alberta.ca Landslide… · At the time of the Spring 2008 instrument readings, extensive cracking was noted along the pile wall along the downslope

Alberta Transportation Instrumentation Monitoring Results Southern Region Site S2 – Highway 22:14, Priddis September 5, 2008 SI #6 (Figures S2-10 to S2-12) The SI was found blocked at 6.1 m. This blockage coincides with the previously

identified movement zone at approximately 5.8 m depth and shown on Figure S2-12. Figure S2-12 demonstrates a clear trend of downslope movement around 4 to 5 m depth since the spring of 2002 with an increase in movement rate between the Spring 2007 and Fall 2007 readings. The SI has likely deformed to the extent that the probe can no longer pass the movement zone. The SI is no longer functional.

Figure S2-11 shows no significant increase in incremental cross-slope

(B-direction) displacement above 5.5 m depth since the Fall 2005 readings. SI #9 (Figures S2-13 and S2-14) There has been no significant movement since the previous readings at this

instrument. As previously noted, the full depth of 35’ could not be reached due to an accumulation of debris at the bottom of the casing. Therefore, for the purposes of plotting the current data, the Fall 2002 reading from 35’ (i.e. the last set of readings obtained at depth of 35’) were used to replace the missing reading at 35’.

SI #11 (Figures S2-15 and S2-16) There has been no significant movement since the previous readings at this

instrument. As previously noted, the full depth of 37’ could not be reached due to an accumulation of debris at the bottom of the casing. Therefore, for the purposes of plotting the current data, the Fall 2002 reading from 37’ (i.e. the last set of readings obtained at depth of 37’) were used to replace the missing reading at 37’.

The SI’s in AMEC BH #1 and SI#10 and the settlement gauge in AMEC BH #1A could not be read. They have been paved over since the Spring 2005 readings. The readings for piezometers 34397, 34398, and 34399 were all measured as approximately 0 kPa. Piezometer #34396 has an audible leak in the segment of excess cable coiled at surface; therefore no actual reading was obtained. The piezometer data plots (Figures S2-17 to S2-20) show that the pressure measured by each of the functioning piezometers in the spring of 2008 is consistent with past readings. However, each of the piezometers has a significant length of unprotected lead tubes coiled at ground surface and it is hypothesized that they may have been damaged and be inaudibly leaking, which could be causing the measured pressures of 0 kPa.

Page 4: September 5, 2008 - transportation.alberta.ca Landslide… · At the time of the Spring 2008 instrument readings, extensive cracking was noted along the pile wall along the downslope

Alberta Transportation Instrumentation Monitoring Results Southern Region Site S2 – Highway 22:14, Priddis September 5, 2008 In summary, the Spring 2008 data shows that:

• The movement at 5 m in SI #6 has continued and has sheared off the SI rendering it inoperable. Movement will likely continue, however, magnitudes and rates cannot be confirmed with the existing SI #6.

• SI’s #9 and #11 in the westbound lane of the road continue to show no significant

movement. This suggests that the pile wall along the downslope edge of the road is supporting the road surface despite continued settlement and cracking along the downslope edge of the road (i.e. downslope of the pile wall).

• The piezometers on the upslope side of the road all measured near zero pore pressure.

This is consistent with past readings and suggests that the automated pumping wells continue to be effective and/or that the piezometers are not functioning properly.

2.3.2 Recommendations

Based on the monitoring results and observations, AMEC recommends that:

• The semi-annual instrument monitoring should be continued. • The annual assessments should be continued.

• The maintenance contractor should restore access to the paved-over instruments.

• The operating status of the automatic pumps should be further checked as per

discussion in the 2006 and 2007 annual inspection report. Also, as per discussions on site during the 2007 annual inspection, new piezometers (with flush-mounted casing protectors) should be installed adjacent to the existing piezometers in order to replace the questionable existing piezometers and provide a reliable means for continuing to monitor the effectiveness of the pumping wells.

3.0 INSTRUMENTATION REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE REQUIRED

• Extend SI’s #9 and #11 above the pile wall and install new flush-mount casing protectors to ensure that these SI’s are not destroyed.

• Recover SI #10 and BH1 settlement gauge which have been buried beneath asphalt.

• Bail down the water level in SI #4 to prevent is blockage from occurring in the future.

• Replace the piezometers on the south side of the road. A proposal for this work will be

prepared by AMEC.

Alberta Transportation Instrumentation Monitoring Results Southern Region Site S2 – Highway 22:14, Priddis September 5, 2008 AMEC does not recommend replacing or retrofitting the SI’s below the pile wall with Measurand SAA cables because the depth of landslide movement is known and the repaired SI’s in the highway can be used for future monitoring.
