FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Upcoming R40 Competitions The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Research Program will soon be competing two R40 competitions:

R40 MCH Research (MCHR) Program supports applied research relating to maternal and child health services, using research designs that allow for

strong causal inference such as Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), and that have the potential to improve health services and delivery of care for maternal and child health populations.

R40 MCH Secondary Data Analysis Studies (SDAS) Program supports applied empirical research relating to maternal and child health services, that utilizes exclusively the secondary analysis of existing national databases and/or administrative records. These projects should have the potential to improve health services and delivery of care for maternal and child health populations.

To receive an email announcement as soon as the FOA is posted on grants.gov, please sign up for the MCH Research listserve, link available on the MCH Research Program website: www.mchb.hrsa.gov/research.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Eileen Bulger, MD, FACS in the Seattle Times HIPRC Core Member Eileen Bulger, MD, FACS (Professor of Surgery) was on the cover of the Seattle Times Pacific Northwest Magazine on Sunday, September 28th. The article, titled, “Inside Harborview: An elite emergency team fights to mend broken bodies and minds,” is about the experience of working on the front lines of health care at Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Department and the mixture of pride and the emotional toll that comes with working in emergency medicine. Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP) Project Request It’s time again to collect possible projects for students in the Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP) for next summer. This information is going out in case you know of faculty in your department who might be interested in mentoring students on their research. As a reminder, this program provides funding for students to participate in a full-time, 10 week long summer research project between their first and second years. This fulfills their required Independent Investigative Inquiry (Triple I) and provides each student a $4,500 stipend. Approximately 35 students are selected each year to receive funding. Participants present their work at the annual poster session in November of their second year, and have the option of submitting their papers for publication. This year’s poster session is Monday, November 18th, 5-7 PM, at the HUB, and we would love to see you there! Projects fall into three categories: laboratory-based research, clinical and health services, or international health. Here is a link to the web page with information for faculty mentors including the faculty guidelines. Faculty should submit their abstract information, using the MSRTP Mentor Project Abstract Catalyst form, before Friday, October 31st. The information will be collated and released to students after Friday, November 14th.

Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium Clinical Research Core (CRC) & Advanced Research Core (ARC) This research is part of the landmark $30 million NCAA-U.S. Department of Defense Grand Alliance, which is funding the most comprehensive study of concussion and head impact exposure ever conducted. The alliance also supports an educational grand challenge aimed at changing important concussion safety behaviors and the culture of concussion reporting and management. The study will enroll an estimated 25,000 male and female NCAA student-athletes over the three-year study period. Participants will receive a comprehensive preseason evaluation for concussion and will be monitored in the event of an injury.

Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP) Project Request

It’s time again to collect possible projects for students in the Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP) for next summer.

Here is a link to the web page with in-formation for faculty mentors including the faculty guidelines. Faculty should submit their abstract information, using the MSRTP Mentor Project Abstract Catalyst form, before Friday, October 31st. The information will be collated and released to students after Friday, November 14th.
