A Message from Mrs. Nardea and Mr. Wolch
It has been an outstanding start to
another school year! Our
enrolment has been stable
around our 2016-17 projection. If
you have not done so already,
please return updated medical,
lunch supervision, physical education, verification of student data and
immunization permission forms to the school as soon as possible. Thanks!
We continue to develop character in all students and this is a shared
responsibility between home and school. There is a need for family,
community and schools to engage cooperatively to encourage students'
learning and maturing as social beings.
Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Nardea or Mr. Wolch with any
concerns or issues you may wish to discuss. It is always our pleasure to talk
to the parents of our students to resolve any potential problems. Please
contact the school office at 416-395-3080 to set up an appointment. The
school office closes daily at 4 p.m., and on a Short Period Day the office will
close at 2:45 p.m.
Our sign at the corner of Brian Drive and Van Horne Avenue will contain
messages to help us keep our local community informed of upcoming
events.
Grade 9 students wanting to make a change in the core courses must do so
by Thursday, October 6. Students must bring a letter from their parents

above the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4). We are extremely proud of our students for doing their very best and we will continue to work on instructional strategies and differentiated instruction to improve student achievement and creating a positive mindset
towards mathematics.
Moving On Up!!!
The “Moving on Up” program is a half day session for incoming grade 9 students. It gives an outline on how high school is going to be and how to succeed. The program discusses the obstacles of transitioning from elementary to secondary. It also lays out how there are different expectations, goals and standards at high school. “Moving on Up” helps you understand the learning skills and how they affect your studies and how to improve them. It’s also a great way to catch up with friends before the school year
starts and get back into the flow of being in school.
By Kelly W—93
Peter P., who attended the program, said via email that “I had a great time yesterday and I'm glad that I attended the program, the program made me realize my mistake that I had last year and made me realize what I had to work on harder on this year, it also helped me set my goal for the future and what to aim for. Thank you!”
New to Canada?
As the first few years are particularly difficult for newcomer students and their families, the Settlement and Education Partnerships in Toronto (SEPT) program aims at providing support by connecting families to services available in the community as well as the school system. By facilitating the settlement and integration of newcomer families into Canadian society, the SEPT
program hopes to promote student performance as well.
Your Settlement Worker at Pleasant View Junior High School is Alex Heung and can be reached at (647) 888-1494 or [email protected]. He is here at school every
alternate Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

74 Shows What They’re Made of!
This year, 74 started the year off with a "getting to
know you" project. Each student was given a template
with 5 panels. They needed to design and colour each
panel with:
1. Their name and birthday
2. Favourite Food or Snack
3. Elementary School and Favourite Subject
4. Favourite Team or Sport
5. Free Choice! Examples, favourite animal or pet,
hobby, song, musical group or artist, or what you want
to be when you grow up.
Some students
volunteered to
put together each

template into a
big 3-D sculpture.
The students put
in a lot of effort
making their

sections colourful and interesting. We may all come
from different schools and like different things, but now
we are all together at PV!!

One of the great things about Pleasant View JHS is
the amount of extra-curricular opportunities our staff
provides for the students. We have an abundance of

students. We encourage our students to get out and
get involved in these opportunities as they are an
excellent way to enrich student life. Below is a list of

December.

Perfection!
A great big congratulations goes out to Steven M. for
achieving a perfect score on the Gauss Math Contest!
While an accomplishment such
as this requires a natural
talent for mathematics, it is
also true that raw talent alone
does not usually result in this
level of proficiency. The
mathematics teachers at
Pleasant View also deserve
congratulations for this success
as well. To recognize the
achievements of Steven, he was
given a personalized copy of a
book from the Center for Education in Mathematics
and Computing at the University of Waterloo.
Character
Development Character development at the TDSB and
Pleasant View JHS is about helping
students learn and practice positive
character attributes. When we build good
character, we build strong communities. In
the school community, character
development is woven into our programs
and it becomes a way of life. Student
success is dependent on a safe, caring
and inclusive learning environment where
all students feel valued. At Pleasant
View, it starts by teaching our students
about the value of character – respecting
themselves and each other, making
positive contributions to their school and
community and thinking critically and
creatively.
Respect was the character trait for
September and each student
participated in an activity where they
wrote what “Respect” means to them.
This was a great activity and helps set the
tone for another amazing year at Pleasant
View JHS!
Everything You Need to Know
The beginning of school can be an exciting and
overwhelming time – for both parents and students. But
we’re here to help make the transition as smooth as possible
and provide all the information you need to know to get
started on the right foot. The TDSB has have created a one-
stop resource page full of back-to-school information,
including the school year calendar, where to go when you
need help, how to get involved and great homework tips for
both elementary and secondary students.
As a parent or guardian, there are many ways to be
involved in your child’s education, such as participating in
field trips, engaging them about their school experiences,
reviewing homework, joining the school council and
attending parent teacher interviews and school events. To
learn more about school councils and parent involvement on
a Board-wide basis, visit www.tdsb.on.ca/howtogetinvolved.
Being in the know about the TDSB is also an important
part of that and we are committed to keeping in touch with
you through regular webcasts and web chats, ward forums
and social media, including Twitter and Instagram. Visit
www.tdsb.on.ca often to learn more about opportunities to
connect.
Follow Us on Social Media
Join the conversations happening on TDSB's social media

about us on Twitter and Facebook, and plenty of useful

Safe Arrival Program
One measure of keeping students safe is ensuring
students have safely arrived at school. If your child is
going to be late or absent for any reason, it is important
that you contact the office immediately and report the
reason for the absence.
At the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) we now have
an automated call-out system that will attempt to contact
you if your child is late or absent on the day where the
school was not previously informed.
The system call-out will work as follows:
Parents/guardians identified in TDSB's Student
Information Systems who has access to student records,
and emergency contact with priority 1 or 2 will receive a
call. When you receive the call, you are required to listen
to the entire message and follow the prompts accordingly.
You will be asked if you are aware or unaware of your
child's absence. If unaware, you will be asked to call the
school immediately.
If you are aware of the absence, you will be asked to enter
the reason for your child's absence. The following options
will be provided for you:
- Illness;
- Doctor Appointment;
- Dentist Appointment;
- Family Matter;
- Weather;
- Other.
At the end of the message, you will have to press 2 to
confirm you received the message. If you do not confirm
receipt, you will receive a call on your mobile phone. If
there is no response from a Priority 1 contact, this same
process will be followed for Priority 2 contacts. If there is
no contact with either Priority 1 or Priority 2, this entire
process will be repeated 3 times in 10 minute intervals.
In the evening, all parents/guardians of students who
were late that day will receive a call informing them of
their child's tardiness.
With this in mind, it is important that your contact
information on file at the office is current and up-to-date.
Please let the office know immediately if your contact
information changes at any time throughout the school
year. We recognize that regular attendance is essential to
the safety, academic success, and well-being of all
students. Thank you for your continued cooperation to
keep your child safe and accounted for.
