October is Eye Health Month – follow-ing on the heels of back to school. How appropriate to focus on the im-portance of keeping your eyes healthy just when the leaves start to change – who would want to miss seeing the beautiful colours of fall?As a mother and an optometrist, I realise the importance of clear vision especially as children head back to the classroom. What often gets for-gotten is that the health of your eyes is just as important. In order to main-tain eye sight, you need to maintain eye health. This is true regardless of your age or occupation. However, as we get older health concerns do be-come more of a focus. Certainly, as we get older, we are more likely to develop eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Cataracts are another change that can affect vision quite noticeably. Eye in-fections, like pink eye, can also occur, although many people think of pink eye as something that is seen more in school aged children.Glaucoma is a disease in which the pressure within the eye gets too high – this damages the nerves in the ret-ina and can lead to blindness if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Glau-coma rarely causes noticeable vision changes in the early stages. Macular Degeneration affects the macula – the small area in the retina

that is responsible for our being able to see detail. Although treat-ment for macular degeneration is limited, if diagnosed early, there are steps that can be taken to prevent rapid progression.Cataracts are quite a common oc-currence, especially as we age, however, they can occur at a young age as a result of poor nutrition or trauma. Cataracts cause blurry vision, sometimes increased glare and even double vision. Treatment is usually by surgery, removing the cloudy lens in-side the eye and replacing it with an arti� cial one.Not only is it important that we get our eyes checked regularly as we get older, at least every 1-2 years, it is important to start at a young age. As children grow and develop, eyesight can change quite suddenly. As we get older, eye health becomes more important as vision stabilizes. my tenure we have substantially grown the membership, created webcasts and e-newsletters, streamlined policies and procedures while bringing corporate records up to date. I must share that I’ve had the great fortune of leading many organization and never have I been a part of such a motivated and dedicated group. Bill Reid is the most energetic and effective ED I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He has proven to be a great mentor to me and will continue to serve the Chamber moving forward. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank each and every one of you for your support and I’m looking forward to continuing to serve as Past President.
