History of Food RegulationFebruary 25, 2015
1848 – out of concerns of food provided to troops in the Mexican-America War, inspections of adulterated food and drugs set standards on exported products like salted meats, fish and flour.
The Division of Chemistry started looking at agricultural commodities in 1867 following the first court case involving adulterated products where butter sued oleomargarine with butter winning and oleo being taxed.
Harvey W. Wiley was appointed Director of the Division of Chemistry and formed the “Poison Squad”, having young healthy men, volunteering to ingest food additive chemicals to determine their impact on human health.
Early in the 1880’s the Ladies Health Association provided the foundation for “pure food, drink and drug campaigns” s

1906 the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed and the Meat Inspection Act was a result of the Upton Sinclair’s publication of The Jungle. President Teddy Roosevelt when given a copy of the book, prompted inspections of the meat slaughtering houses and passage of the Act
1938, The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt , spurred by the Elixir Sulfanilamide disaster where 100 people died from elixir consumption
1976 FDA Guideline Food Inspection tool was developed using a 44 item and 100 point program
US Food and Drug Administration initiated a national guideline to food inspections, 1958
1993 FDA Uni-Code was a Science –based Code requiring individual State Adoption

As you see from the history of our very proud profession, there have been innovative processes that have spurred on great accomplishments.
None of this would have occurred without our predecessors having a great Value system and one we must acknowledge and attempt to emulate.
