HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER?
Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who
(namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we
tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought
up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own
behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or
charged with violations of our training.
We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths
about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for
helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the proph-
ets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose
message we don’t like? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 9:30-37
“If anyone wishes to be the first, he shall be the last of all
and the servant of all.”
A teacher with a bag of candy in front of a class of young
students who ask “Who wants to be first?” will likely see a
sea of wildly waving hands and hear shouts of “Me, me,
me!” A teacher who has given an assignment to memorize
The Declaration of Independence who ask “Who wants to
be first?” is likely not to see any hands at all. How
children and adults respond to the question, “Who wants to
be first?” often depends on whether the activity involved is
a treat or a task, pleasant or unpleasant. When we are
challenged to be the first to serve others and respond to
God’s generosity by sharing our talents, abilities, and
resources, do we shout “Me, me, me!” and rush to be first?
Or do we turn away, turn on the television, or play tennis
or golf, or spend hours texting our BFF-of-the-day?
When we are standing with others waiting to enter into the
presence of God, will Jesus point to us and say, “You
first!” or will he be point at someone else?

6 Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018
Today’s readings invite us to become great in the sight of God by doing
God’s will, surrendering our lives in the service of others, as Jesus did. The
first reading tells us how the world often ill-treats those who strive to live
justly and do God’s will. The second reading is in tune with the dispute
among the apostles about who is the greatest. James warns us that selfish
ambitions destroy peace and cause conflicts and war. He advises us to
choose the path of righteousness and humble service, which leads to lasting peace. In today’s
gospel, Jesus teaches his apostles that child-like humility and selfless service make one great in the
eyes of God.
Jesus says that people who serve humbly are the greatest. Presenting a child before them, Jesus
explains that one who wishes to be the first among them must be a servant to all. True greatness
consists in serving one's fellow men and is never self-centered. It lies in the ability to see and
respond to the needs of others and it presupposes compassion and sympathy. To be the greatest in
the kingdom of heaven, one must give up one’s personal opinion in order to accept Christ’s
revealed truth. To be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, one must put aside one’s own personal
preferences when they conflict with God’s will. The two conditions of true greatness are humility
and service. The Christian vocation is an apostolate of bearing witness to Christ through service.
The truly great person is a servant - a person who spends his/her day taking care of other people.
What does it mean when Jesus states that those who want to be the first must be the last? Jesus
wants his apostles to substitute for their ambition to rule, thus becoming the first, the ambition to
serve, thus becoming the last. We are all supposed to be serving, whatever our position or role in
society, the family or the Church may be, because true greatness lies in being the servant or slave
of all.
We must become great through humble, self-giving service. In Jesus' view, greatness is found in
our willingness to accept, welcome and serve those who are considered unacceptable and
undeserving by reason of class, color, religion, wealth or culture. If we are to be truly great, we
must be ready to accept four challenges: (1) to put ourselves last, (2) to be the servant of all, (3) to
receive the most insignificant human beings with love, and (4) to expect nothing in return. During
the holy Mass let us pray for the true spirit of service, for an attitude of love for those around us.
Mother Teresa puts it like this: “Be the living expression of God's kindness through humble
service. Show kindness in your face”.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of prepar ing the unbaptized, and those un-formed
by Christianity (termed, un-catechized), for acceptance of Christ, of the Catholic Faith, and reception of the
Sacraments of Initiation. Full initiation normally concludes with the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday).
The process usually takes a year, although there may exceptions, due to age or infirmity. Catholic initiation (outside
of the R.C.I.A.) indicates that a person is already validly baptized, already accepts Christ, and now wishes to be
Roman Catholic. This catechesis (learning the Faith) can be adapted to the specific needs and circumstances of the
individual.
We will begin class sometimes in September, if you know of anyone interesting in learning about the process please
let Fr. Shaiju know.
