Paul reminds them in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” He goes on to encourage in verse 9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” God sees our labor to do good for his kingdom. The reward for our work will not be salvation. That is a free gift. But God will reward our labors through other blessings in our lives. Pastor’s Ponderings

“I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.” Galatians 4:11

The Labor Day Holiday that we enjoy in September was created in order to celebrate, and recognize that the American worker had not labored in vain. The origins of Labor Day date back to 1882. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing and the life of the American worker, especially in the larger industrial areas, was a very difficult one. Hours were long, conditions were often dangerous, regulations were non-existent and to top it all off, pay was low. Many were working their fingers to the bone with little or nothing to show for it. They were laboring in vain. New labor unions in New York asked their workers to walk off their jobs on September 5, 1882 to march from City Hall to Union Square as a protest against working conditions and raise public support for their plight. The march started slowly but by the days end, 10,000 workers made the march to Union Square. Twelve years following the New York City parade, Labor Day was declared a National holiday by President Grover Cleveland.

What does this have to do with us? Paul had taught the Galatians a gospel of salvation by grace, not by works. However, once Paul had left Galatia, others had begun to lead them back into a works based religion. A religion where you earn your way through good works made so much more sense to the Galatians and, if we

are honest, it makes sense to us hard working Americans as well.

Grace, while we enjoy it, doesn’t always seem like the best plan to us. It sure seems like there could be a few big loopholes in this salvation by grace idea! But that is the good news of the gospel and it was the message that Paul reiterated to the Galatian

Christians. In view of this grace, Paul still encourages the Galatians to continue in good works. But why? If good works were not required to receive salvation would the people not be laboring

to do good works in vain? Not at all.

This Labor Day, enjoy a hot dog and a day off as an appreciated American laborer. But also remember that your labor is seen by a Holy God and that your labor for the kingdom is never in vain.

Sharing Our Prayers, Praise, Needs & Celebrations

Anabel Lamberg – Please keep Anabel’s family and friends in your prayers. We learned on August 30th that Anabel passed away in the early hours of that morning. Jim Rees – Please continue to keep Jim (and Barbara) Rees in your prayers as Jim pursues his recommended chemo treatment, every 21 days. Currently these treatments are occurring in Denver. They are so grateful for all your prayers, love and support. We will keep you posted as we know more. If you would like to send Jim a card, you may mail it to their home address: Jim & Barbara Rees 11675 County Road 251 Salida, CO 81201

Jerry Massee - Jerry was recently admitted to Swedish Hospital in

Englewood and is being monitored in the Neuro ICU for a brain bleed. He is receiving excellent care and the prognosis is good. At the time of this writing, he will be there throughout the week and will be re-evaluated on Friday, August 31st. What they learn at that time will guide them as to next steps for restoring Jerry’s health. Phyllis is there with him as well as is Jerry’s daughter. We will keep you posted as we know more. Thank you to all those in our church family who have already stepped up to assist them while they are in Denver. If you would like to send Jerry a card, you may mail it to their home address: Jerry & Phyllis Massee 9399 County Rd. 178A Salida, CO 81201

Paul Million – Please keep Norma Smith’s brother, Paul Million who lives in Wichita, KS., deep within your prayers. Paul has been in and out of the hospital with some serious health challenges. He is seeking necessary medical attention to determine the cause and course of treatment.

Judy Eyler – Judy has asked that we let you know how incredibly grateful she is for all the prayers, cards and caring concern as she prepares for her upcoming surgery. Judy’s recent visit to the hospital to have a procedure to remove an obstruction in her heart resulted in NO obstruction to be found. Yeah!!! She was then able to be cleared for surgery! Please keep Judy deep within your prayers as she is scheduled to have her back surgery on Thursday, September 6th. Judy has been patiently (and painfully) waiting for

this date to arrive. If you would like to send Judy a card, you may mail it to her home address: Judy Eyler 10285 Piute Dr. Salida, CO 81201

Peaches – Thank you to Judy Naviaux, once again, for coordinating our summer peach orders this year. And also, thank you to David Hearn and Jerry Massee for going to Hotchkiss pick up the peaches! The peaches are SO yummy! It’s one of our favorite parts of summer!

Thank You to all our “Summer Special Music” musicians – Thank you to the following musicians for providing special music during our summer worship services: Elaine Adams, Rod Schleicher, Bob Campbell, Calob Rundell, Rev. Terry Bebermeyer, Joan Lobeck, Linda Taylor, Brenda Hechel, Salida-A-Capella, Marcia Roberts and Mary Sandell. Your gifts and talents enriched our worship services more than you’ll ever know. Thank you to Bob Campbell for coordinating the schedule musicians for “Summer Special Music”!

Fred Harrington – Please continue your prayers for Fred & Olivia Harrington as they navigate Fred’s medical needs. Fred recently had his surgery to remove the kidney affected by cancer. The surgery went very well, even though he did have an allergic reaction to one of the medications. We pray that those challenges have been resolved and he is on the mend. We will keep you posted as we know more. If you would like to send them a card, you may mail it to their Texas home address: Fred & Olivia Harrington 609 Ferris Ave. Waxahachie, TX 75165

Worship in the Park – Thank you to everyone who attended this summer’s Worship in the Park; our collaborative worship service and picnic in the park with our Presbyterian friends. It was a wonderful morning and was well attended by both church communities. Thank you to Ginny Biglow for all your hard work and representing our church in the picnic planning process.

Courtney Shucker – Our dear friend, Courtney, passed away on August 1st, several days after a massive stroke. You can read Courtney’s Obituary HERE, which ran in the Mountain Mail on August 7th. Window Restoration

Update September 2018

The restoration of our first window (and most critically in need of repair) is well under way. The 12

x 19 foot stained glass window, in the choir room, has been removed and transported to Denver Art Glass for the restoration process.

Restoration steps have been going very well, all in all. However, there was an unexpected discovery of serious disrepair in much of the curved wood throughout the window. While the initial estimate for the restoration of this window was $50,640.00, we were notified of the additional $6000.00 would be needed in order to complete the window, bringing our total commitment to Denver Art Glass, to $57,640.00.

Thanks to the generosity of many, we have raised $46,459.00. We’ve made our first required payment to Denver Art Glass for $10,000.00. The remaining two payments will be: $25,000 within 14 days of being notified that the restoration process is completed, and final payment of $21,640.00 within 14 days of re-installation.

We are actively seeking your generous contributions to help fund the Window Restorations Program. If you have been considering contributing to this program we ask that you do so as soon as you are able.

You can now monitor the progress of funds raised for this historic project by a visual display in Century Hall.

In addition to welcoming your individual donations, mark your calendar to attend an incredible month community event where we will be one of the presenters at Salida Soup, on Thursday, September 20

th for the funding

opportunity they provide.

Plan to attend and Invite your friends to come, so they will learn more about our project and hopefully we’ll win their VOTE!

The presenter with the most votes takes home all donations! Here is a little information about Salida Soup. Windows Restoration Update continues on page 5…

Join us each month for the evolution of fundraising. Bring a potluck item and a $5 donation to be eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. As a diner, you will hear five-minute pitches from community members who need funding for projects that are beneficial to the community. 2018 PIG ROAST…IN REVIEW!

The 2018 Pig Roast volunteers were the absolute best ever! Not only did we have the valued support of members of our congregation here in Salida, but we established some new relationships with those willing to contribute for the first time. Also, we were able to enjoy catching up with several former residents of Salida who returned especially to support this event. Incredible!

We had a great year, serving over 300 dinners, and netting $3900 which supplements our general fund.

Some memorable moments… A stove fire while attempting to clean the oven, resulting in… ~ Purchase and installation of a new stove ~ Professional fire, smoke and fire retardant cleanup (expensive) ~ Failure of our smoke alarm system during said fire, resulting in several hours of ear-splitting alarm testing on one of our busiest prep days.

And then, before we were fully able to appreciate the fruits of everyone’s labor, a sewer backup in the basement discovered about 6:15 on Friday evening.

Second emergency 911 non-injury call within the week, visit from city utilities, then a plumber, then CLEAN UP. Yes, we do have a plumber who answers his phone and actually shows up after hours on a Friday. He is Dan with Rhodes and Doyle Maintenance and Supply, who totally deserves this mention.

And, of course, cabbage….. All in all, great fun, mostly wonderful memories, and a bit of money for our church. Thanks, Burrell & Sherry

Have you picked up your card yet??

Look around and find one…..

This invitation is for YOU!

The Kairos Prison Ministry is an interdenominational ministry whose purpose is to bring the message of Jesus’ saving grace to those incarcerated in prison. Our Church has been privileged to help support this at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex with donations from the Endowment Fund as well as volunteers from our congregation. We recently received the following thank you letter from them that shows the impact we are having.

July 16, 2018

First United Methodist Church of Salida C/O David Hearn PO Box 945 Salida, CO 81201

On behalf of Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc., I wanted to personally express my appreciation for your financial gift of $250 as well as your prayer support. It is because of financial

support like yours that Kairos volunteers are able to respond to Christ's call to visit those in prison. The prayer support is also a key component of the weekend because the prayer chain (each link representing one individual’s prayer for them) which we introduce early on the weekend is a visible sign to the participants of Christ's love from the larger Christian community. This loving support begins to soften the "hardened hearts" that enter into the weekend.

The 4-day weekend we just completed at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex was the fourth such weekend presented there. It turned out to be a very special weekend in several ways. First, a couple of weeks prior to our scheduled weekend there was a major violent incident within the prison which triggered a facility lockdown. Typically during a lockdown all special activities, such as a Kairos weekend, are cancelled. However, the warden made an exception and allowed our weekend to proceed.

Then, near the end of our weekend it was announced that the warden would once again allow baptism ceremonies to be conducted within the prison. Three weeks after the completion of our weekend, I was present to witness ten members of the Kairos community at BVCC baptized as Christians.

I have participated in ten Kairos weekends over the last six years and I can assure you that Kairos is a program you can be proud to support. Kairos graduates have a new-found hope in Christ. They also experience joy, despite their incarceration, realizing that they are loved by God and that God wants to have a relationship with them.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your continued support of Kairos and let you know that because of your support thirty-six men were brought closer to Christ during our most recent Kairos weekend.

God Bless,

Patrick Dolan, Kairos Donor Coordinator

The next Kairos weekend will be September 27-30. We will be announcing specific ways in which you can help support this very effective ministry in the near future. If you want more information, please contact Cynthia & David Hearn or Lisa & Roger Hilbig.

Our Children’s Program will start up again on September 9th after taking the summer off.

Each Sunday, during the worship service, children in attendance have the opportunity to come up to the front of the sanctuary for the Message for Young People.

Following the Message for Young People, all children are invited to leave the sanctuary with our Sunday School teachers to go to the classroom. Parents may pick them up there after worship. On Communion Sundays, the children will return to the sanctuary to participate in Communion with their families.

We welcome new and returning volunteers who would like to help with the Children’s Program. It is our policy to always have two volunteers with the children at all times. Age appropriate activities are provided each week. Children benefit from the small group and large group activities which include: exploring life lessons and virtues through Bible Stories, creative art projects, playing with manipulatives (floor or table games), and experiencing the joy of music!

Come play, have fun, be inspired and help demonstrate to the children, what living a life in Faith can be about. You will be blessed and will be a blessing!

If you are interested and/or need more information about the Children’s Program please speak with Pastor Melinda, Licia Iverson or Ginny Biglow. Thank You!!
