September 2018 Abner Montessori School 1 The pre-primary class has been busy learning new Spanish words. Just ask your hijo o hija (son or daughter) to find a body part in Spanish. You will be surprised how quickly our tots can identify them. We have said goodbye to summer and hello to the new fall season. Please make sure your child has a change of extra clothing as we are discussing what clothes we wear as cooler weather nears. We are also learning about the planets, geometric shapes and body organs this month. Our class has enjoyed reading When the Leaf Blew In, by Steve Metzger, Acorns Everwhere! by Kevin Sherry and Discovering My World The Solar System, by Melvin and Gilda Berger. Some new songs have caught our ear. Don’t be surprised to hear your child singing Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas y Pies (Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes), Autumn Leaves, and songs about the planets. In the upcoming weeks we will be learning all about the change of the season. We would greatly appreciate any items you would like to add to our experience as we continue to explore with artificial leaves, fall stickers or pumpkins. This month in the Elementary House, students are continuing their study of the creation and history of Earth. Topics that have been covered are our universe, the solar system, layers of the Earth, elements and landforms. We are also beginning our study of the six kingdoms of life. Many students have been exploring animal phylum's of vertebrates and invertebrates. Discovering the characteristics of these groups is important for understanding classification.

In math, lower elementary students are studying number sense, place value and rounding. They are also working on addition and multiplication facts. Upper elementary students have been working on scientific notation, order of operations and solving for variables.

In language, lower elementary students are discovering the function of words by learning about nouns, adjectives and verbs. Upper elementary students are

l ea r n ing about possessive singular and posses s i ve plural nouns using apostrophes.

When hurricane Florence came through, students became very interested! Students enjoyed a video about how hurricanes form. We also watched the news to track the hurricane and learn how to stay safe.

As a class, we are working on building our community. Montessori philosophy embraces mixed-age classrooms. When students can work and learn together, respect and community building is fostered. Accepting leadership roles is important in the elementary classroom.

In September, the children continued to adjust to the work cycle and the expectations of being in the classroom. Some children will work together sharing their interest in the material accessible on the shelves. Seeing more material being pulled off the shelves exposes children to additional activities. This is when we start to see children engage in more language and math however, practical life is still the most important area in the room.

Apples were the topic of the month. We learned

about Johnny Appleseed, tasted apples, and made Apple Fritters. The children were given red, green, and yellow apples to taste. We graphed which color of apples were the favorite. Room one liked green apples the best and Room two liked red apples the best. The children also peeled apples, stirred ingredients together and stuffed a small pastry dough with fresh apple filling. After the pastry was baked the children enjoyed their creation with vanilla ice cream for afternoon snack.
