LEGISLATIVE The main thing going on legislatively is the election coming up. We
repeatedly invited 57th Senatorial candidate Christopher Belt to our meeting
and he was a no show. His campaign director Adam White flat out told me
that he worked for the senate and not the Democrat party and he had to clear
it with the Senate. Christopher said he would come to our meeting and Adam
said he would call me back, not once but twice he told me that. Neither one
happened. The Republican candidate stated she is for a minor motorcycle
helmet bill on our voter questionnaire for the primary election. Neither can-
didate returned our Voter Questionnaire for the General Election. So there
you have it, the one that will probably win seems to be a puppet for the sen-
ate and the other knows what's best for you. Happy Trails.
Mike Gallagher
LAP SPONSOR AT THE SPRINGFIELD MILE St Clair County ABATE is a lap sponsor at the Springfield Mile. The members pre-
sent at the August meeting donated until we hit the $100 mark. This is great public
relations and get’s our chapter name out to thousands of motorcycle race fans.
Hometown boy Jeffery Carver won the national event Memorial day and is the fa-
vorite to win it this September 2nd again. Jeff is from Grafton Illinois.
St. Clair ABATE and the Great Flood of ‘93.
Back in 1993, I had the honor of serving as President of the St. Clair
County Chapter. At the time, we were over 400 members strong and a pow-
erhouse within ABATE of IL, primarily due to the efforts of Michael and
Sheila Gallagher. As the rains began then continued, the local news (internet
was a baby and only rich folks had bag phones), which was our primary
source of information began talking about a “100 Year Flood”. At first, no-
body paid attention, but it soon became apparent that what was happening
outside was something phenomenal and life-changing. As levee after levee
failed, whole towns up and down the Mississippi became inundated in her
muddy waters and lives were lost and wrecked. After calling every member
living below the bluffs to ensure their safety, I met with key ABATE mem-
bers and we quickly devised a plan to help those impacted by the flood.
Over the course of one week, we not only secured money, supplies and sup-
port from many local businesses, but we put together a “Flood Drive” re-
questing building materials, cash, clothing… ANYTHING that those who
had lost everything may need. We secured two tractor-trailers and held the
drive on the east end of Belleville out by the high school. The flood drive
was a huge success, completely filling both semis and raising thousands of
dollars in donations. Members got back together the following weekend to
escort the trucks to Alton. Approximately 30 riders and the semis were es-
corted from Belleville to Alton by the Illinois State Police. It was something
to see! We arrived at the Red Cross Command center in Alton and began
unloading the trucks. Their volunteers were taken aback by the scruffy and
rough looking bikers who had raised so much for folks they didn’t even
know. Right after the last truck was unloaded, the Command Center re-
ceived word that the sandbag wall in downtown Alton was failing and even
more homes and businesses were at risk. Without being asked or even giv-
ing it a second thought, we hopped onto our bikes and scootered downtown.
We parked the bikes and spent the next several hours rebuilding the sandbag
walls downtown.
So many members came forward to do a truly righteous act for those
in need that I get misty-eyed thinking about it today. I’ve been proud of
what our chapter and our members have been able to do over the years and
our response to the Great Flood of ‘93 is a great example of what we can
accomplish when we’re motivated and eager to do what needs to be done.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hi all,
Wow September is here already. Always love this time of year. The
weather is slowly cooling off and it is a good time to get some riding in. It's a
great chance to get out and see some of the beautiful country that we have in
our area.
If you take a nice ride and want to let others know about it post it on
our Facebook page. Or you could write a small article about your ride and
submit it to the newsletter. Mike G is always looking for good content and
would love to add it. Also, when you’re out and about remember to let peo-
ple know about ABATE and what we do. We could always use new mem-
bers. Don't forget to support our newsletter advertisers when out riding. They
support us.
It won't be long before the election will be here. Check out the candi-
dates and be an informed voter. (DO YOUR HOMEWORK). ABATE of IL
grades the candidates and puts it in the state newsletter. If you get a chance
to check it out, it may help you with your decision.
Hope to see you at the meeting September 13th and if you can bring a
small bottle of booze (airplane size) for our cooler we are giving away at the
Freeburg chili cook of on September 29th.
Until then, be safe,
ED

Meeting 18 August 2018 Officer Reports: State Coordinator (Ryan Hubbard): Please keep all information regarding ABATE
of IL positive when posting on social media. Ryan has been receiving phone calls about people bashing others or chapters and it needs to stop. Assistant Coordinator (Jeff Marsh): Planning the State Seminar for 2019. Also agrees with Ryan that we need to move in a positive direction and remember our mission. Treasurer (Paul Truax): Will not be at the October BOD meeting. He will be doing
a session on being a Great Chapter at the 2019 Seminar. Legislative (Josh Witkowski): Gave out a handout on current and potential bills.
Plans to have its own website shortly, which will come out of the Legislative Budget. Want to get chapter consensus on getting a bus to transport people to and from Legislative Day. If a bus were to leave from our Region, where and what times would you like it to depart and return? Be cautious when posting political issues on the chapter or state websites. ABATE of IL is working with both Federal & IL State groups involved with autonomous vehicles (Driverless) – More to follow Office Manager (Pauli Ward): Call if you want labels for members that have been expired for a while to send them a renewal form. Talk to off-road riders about be-coming ABATE members. Go to their meetings if possible. Safety & Ed (Mike Brush): Please help get the word out to watch for motorcycles
and be aware of our surroundings. Products (Tracey Eddington): Not present. Sounds like she did well with product
sales at the State Party in June. Newsletter (Janet Thompson): Wants each chapter to get at least one business
sponsor if they don’t already have one. Look on page 7 of the State Newsletter for sponsor information. Working on drafting a letter that can be submitted with an ap-plication to become a business sponsor. For $50 per year a business can be listed in the state newsletter under the business section of the supporting chapter. $50 a year is very small to get your name/advertise your business in the newsletter. Public Relations (Brian Dukes): Working on proclamations. Looking at additional
promotional materials to provide the chapters. Bike Raffle (Howard Nation): Not present. Per Pauli, need all tickets sold or not
turned in by August 28th or at the Springfield Mile. Activities (Mark Werries): Numbers were down this year for the State Party.
Those who attended had a great time. This was the first year this event was opened to the Public. It is encouraged chapters attend this event as it is nice to get acquainted with other chapter members as well as other fellow riders. BOD will de-termine the place, date and events for next year’s party at the October meeting. New Business:
No scholarship given this year. Annual MRF Pledge – Each chapter has been challenged to donate $1 per

Safety & Ed Report – September 2018
Where has the summer gone, temperatures are starting to change and
it is great riding weather.
School is back in session and I have schedule for Mascoutah High School for
the driver’s education classes next month to provide motorcycle awareness.
If you are interested please contact me and you can contribute. This is fun
and exciting plus you are representing ABATE members providing education
to our young drivers.
Remain vigilant at all times as there is road construction areas that do not
take motorcycles into consideration. Lawn mowing continues to be a hot
topic as people are blowing grass on the roads. This creates a slick hazard
for motorcyclists. Also, chapter member Steve Gunther called the Saint
Clair County Sheriff's Office to report grass on the road and found out blow-
ing grass onto the road as a Class B misdemeanor. It is littering and it seems
to be a Hot Topic on a lot of motorcycle websites.
Do you have Flight insurance such as Air Evac Lifeteam (Air Med Care Net-
work)? If not, you should consider getting it in the event it is needed to airlift
and to get quick medical care. Will your medical insurance pick up that
cost? I encourage each of you to call your insurance and ask the question.
Did you know for a low yearly cost for the entire household you can save
thousands of dollars or lots of financial trouble later? You are covered by
200+ aircraft locations over 30+ states in the USA and with the cost $30,000
and up of medical airlift for a low annual fee of $65 you do the math.
Check it out: http://www.airmedcarenetwork.com
Remain observant at all times!
