Halloween ObsessionSEPTEMBER 2017

If you know me, then you know that I am completely obsessed with Halloween. I can remember my very first trick-or-treat outing, when I dressed as a tiger. My Dad took my brother and I into that dark night and I was amazed by the costumes, the decorations and maybe just the complete freedom of this event. You might say I was “bewitched” by the whole spectacle. The months before autumn must have been hard on my parents as I began my costume planning. I had them drive all around to toy, hobby and drug stores as I searched for the perfect outfit.

I will search the internet looking at old boxed costumes, perhaps recalling or having second thoughts on past costume selections. I am obsessed! Halloween is also very special to me because I married my wife, Anne, right here at the winery on, you guessed it, Halloween. Of course we had a more formal wedding ceremony the following year in France, and can I tell you what my costume was at my wedding? I dressed up as Napoleon.

2015 Ghost Winery Malbec With a label that features an etching of our historic stone cellar, the Ghost Winery Malbec evokes early Flora Springs labels in its look and typeface. This special wine is sourced from two small blocks within the Komes Ranch just steps away from that storied cellar. This Malbec hints of the dark arts, with hair-raising flavors of black raspberry and rich cassis, hints of black espresso and notes of rich, decadent chocolate. With a supple texture, soft, silky tannins, and a long-lasting finish, this wine is scary good.

2015 All Hallows’ Eve Cabernet Franc The custom artwork on this year’s All Hallows’ Eve was created by San Francisco artist and illustrator Jeremy Fish, who was named San Francisco City Hall’s first artist-in-residence. The wine comes from a small block near John Komes’ home on the Rutherford side of Komes Ranch. Featuring blue fruit flavors - plum and blueberry - the wine also shows notes of tea and violet which are typical characteristics of Cabernet Franc. The 2015 is a ripe vintage and this wine is richly concentrated and broadly textured, with sandalwood notes from the oak barrel aging that adds complexity.
