To the new families in our community, I would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to you in the upcoming school year! During the month of September, its always so nice to see the students return to school, so eager to reconnect with their teachers and friends. As we welcome our students back to school in September, it seems fitting that this months virtue is HOSPITALITY. Our teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms, gathering together resources, supplies and putting up their bul- letin boards to create a welcoming environment. As we know, hospitality is more than just a welcoming back. Our quote for the month is from Matthew 25:40, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me”. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to the new and returning staff at St. Anselm. Welcome to Mrs. Wilson, our new Special Education Teacher and to Miss Kemp, the Senior Kindergarten/Grade 1 Teacher and to Mr. Cotton, the Physical Education Teacher. Also joining the St. Anselm Catholic School com- munity is Father Josef Vano, the new Pastor at St. Anselm Parish. We look for- ward to working with all of the new members of the St. Anselm Catholic School community! Throughout the month of September, we have planned a number of community events to welcome families back to school. On Friday, September 9th from 9- 10:30 a.m., we have our Annual Welcome Back Breakfast in the gymnasium for staff and parents. On Friday, September 16th, Ms. Napaos class will be leading our Welcome Back Mass at 9 a.m. To conclude a busy September month, we will be having our Curriculum Night and BBQ on September 22nd, which is also a CSPC sponsored event. All families are invited to these events in Sep- tember and we hope to see many of you throughout the month. In the upcoming school year, we will continue to focus on Mathematics in our School Improvement Planning initiatives. Similar to last year, students in Grade 1-8, will be using the JUMP math program to support their learning in math. Our main area of focus in Math will be on Measurement as our data indicates this strand is where many students experience difficulty. The Nelson Math re- source will continue to be used in conjunction with JUMP Math. The staff at St. Anselm have made preparations to ensure a challenging and re- warding school year. They are ready, with your assistance, to establish open communication and to provide excellent Catholic education for your child(ren). We look forward to working with you in the upcoming year! R. A MESSAGE FROM THE CSPC CHAIR... WELCOME BACK! The Catholic School Parent Council (CSPC) would like to take this opportunity to welcome all returning and new families to St. Anselm’s. This is going to be another wonderful year and the CSPC is looking forward, in concert with all of you, to enhancing the school experience for all St. A’s students in 2016/17. You will hear more at the “Welcome Back Breakfast” which CSPC is organizing and funding. If you’re interested in joining the 2016/2017 Executive, be sure to complete the self-nomination or parent nomination form and return it to the office by Monday, September 12th.

CLASS PLACEMENTS

Each year, the St. Anselm teaching staff, along with the school Principal, work to-gether to build class compositions for the upcoming year. When determining where to place students, the following factors are considered: Learning Styles, Academic Abilities, Social/Emotional/ESL/Special Education, Behavioral needs, equitable bal-ance of boys and girls and a student’s previous placement. Our aim is to ensure that every class is as balanced as pos-sible, to ensure that all students attain their full academic potential and well being. During the summer months, we experienced continued en-rolment, thereby impacting class placements and our staff-ing model. As of September 8th, we currently have 400 full-time students registered at St. Anselm! Almost every class in the school is currently at the Ministry of Education class size cap: Kindergarten: class cap is 30 students Grade 1-3: class cap is 20 students (10% of the TCDSB can have 23 students). Grade 4-8 (straight grades): class cap is 31 students Grade 4-8 (combined grades): class cap is 29 students. As in previous years, we are anticipating some changes to take place during the month of September and kindly re-quest your patience as these changes are made. Parents of students involved in any possible changes will be notified as changes become necessary. After September 30th, clas-ses will be set and changes are not normally made.

CSPC WELCOME BACK BREAKFAST All parents are welcome to attend our Wel-come Back to School Breakfast for staff and parents on Friday, September 9th from 9:00 - 10:30 in the Gymnasium. The CSPC will be graciously sponsoring this year’s break-fast. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with other parents and meet the newest members of the community. Teaching staff will be invited to the gymnasium from 10-10:30 a.m. An invitation will be sent home during the first week of school.

CHARITY DRESS DOWN DAYS In an effort to provide further assistance to those in need, we will be asking students to make a financial donation on Dress Down Days. Each month, a Catholic Charity is chosen and the monies collected will be sent

directly to the organization. The name of the Charity se-lected will be included in each month’s Newsletter. In Sep-tember, we will be raising funds for Free the Children. In-formation on the organization can be found at ww.freethechildren.com. We encourage students to make a minimum donation of $2.00 on Friday, September 30th.

ALLERGY AWARE SCHOOL We have many students in our school with severe life threatening food aller-gies (anaphylaxis) to peanuts, nut products and other food items. THE LUNCH MOM PROGRAM BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!! In an effort to simplify planning lunches, we will be using The Lunch Mom, school hot lunch program, Monday-

Friday. Each semester, The Lunch Mom (TLM Ca-tering) provides a new menu and an order form to parents at the school. Parents have the option of choosing lunch any number of days/week they wish. Forms will be distributed in early September, and are returned by parents to a “hot lunch bin” in the office, where they are picked up by TLM staff. Unlike some hot lunch programs, all children have the SAME lunch every day. This helps ensure that each partici-pating child has the opportunity to try new, healthy foods. FOODS ARE GROUPED LOOSELY BY DAY TO HELP WITH FUSSY EATERS - for exam-ple, Monday is Pasta Day, Tuesday is Vegetarian day,Wednesday is “Chicken Finger Lover Day”, Thursday is “Beef Lover Day”, Friday is “fun day”. Gluten-free, vegetarian, dairy-free, and egg-free options are pro-vided upon request. There is no pork used in the prep-aration of any foods served by TLM Catering. The Lunch Mom currently provides approximately 3000 hot lunches per week at seven of Toronto’s private and public schools. Forms will be sent home to fami-lies on the 1st day of school and parents are invited to check out their TLM’s website for further information www.thelunchmom.com
