Director’s Report

This is Stephanie Derry’s second Disney show in which she has taken on the role of director, with the first being WMTC’s “The Little Mermaid” last year co-directing with Cassie Roome, and “Mulan” will mark her second.

Starting at the age of 4, Stephanie has performed in “Anne of Green Gables” at GMS and has since appeared in “The Wizard of Oz”, “Anything Goes” and their most recent production, “Legally Blonde” as Whitney.

Stephanie joined WMTC in 2004 and has performed in over 18 productions with WMTC, her favourites being “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, “Grease”

performing as Rizzo, “High School Musical” as Gabriella, “Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision” as Gert (Iceland) and WMTC’s most recent production, “Rent” as Alexi Darling. Stephanie is currently in her 4th and final year of her Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts degree with Drama as her major. Stephanie believes that “Mulan” is a true product of team effort, and she would like to thank everyone who has worked on the show, the Production Team, all volunteers, and the tremendous cast for all their hard work and dedication. She would also like to dedicate a special thank you to Jesse Lazaro and Jake Fonti for their hard work and contribution to the show. Stephanie hopes you enjoy the show.

Vocal Coach’s Report

The last time she was on the stage was as Ursula in “The Little Mermaid” last year with Wyong Musical Theatre Company. She has also been teaching singing for many years and been playing music for as long as she can remember. She is thankful for the opportunity to be the vocal coach of Mulan and is proud of all the effort that the cast has put in. She hopes that the show is a reflection of their talent and hard work.

Choreographer’s Report

Sarah Heywood has been a dancer for twenty-five years and a dance teacher for

twelve years. She has performed in the USA, NZ and around Australia. She

performed in many musicals as a child with Gosford Musical Society. Sarah has

a Bachelor of Arts (Dance and Theatre Studies) and a Bachelor of Education.

She is a local dance high school teacher at St. Peter's Catholic College,

Tuggerah where she choreographed their musical “Grease” - performed by the

high school students in March 2015. Sarah performed in the musical “HAIR” with

Wyong Musical Theatre Company in 2014 and will be performing in “Mary

Poppins” with Gosford Musical Society in October/November this year.

She would like to thank WMTC for this great opportunity and to the very creative and dedicated

production team for sharing the Mulan journey with her. She would also like to thank the very

talented cast members who have worked so hard to make Stephanie, Madeline and her vision

come to life on stage.

She hopes you all enjoy “Disney's Mulan Jr,” a story that captures the spirit of honour, loyalty,

The Legend of Hua Mulan.

In Chinese, mùlán (Chinese: 木蘭) refers to the magnolia. The heroine of the poem is given

different family names in different versions of her story. According to History of the Ming, her

family name is Zhu (朱), while

the History of the Qing say it

is Wei (魏). The family name 花

(Huā, lit. "flower"), which was introduced by Xu Wei, has become the most popular in recent years in part because of its more poetic meaning.

Disney's 1998 movie Mulan popularized the legend of the girl that took her father's place in the army. The legend stems from a Chinese poem, written during the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), a time where Northern China was ruled by nomadic invaders. This is reflected in the fact that the poem refers to the ruler as the Khan rather than as the Emperor. As is common with Chinese stories, it was further elaborated on as a novel during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and as a play during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Her surname has been variously given as Zhu, Wei, or Hua in various sources but in fact no independent contemporary records exist to confirm her existence.

In her 1976 bestseller “The Woman Warrior”, acclaimed writer Maxine Hong Kingston, described Mulan as a source of inspiration for Chinese women. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hua_Mulan and http://www.yellowbridge.com/onlinelit/mulan.php (Ode to Mulan)

~Poem of Mulan

“The male hare wildly kicks its feet;

the female hare has shifty eyes,

But when a pair of hares runs side by side,

Who can distinguish whether I am male or female?”

Curtis Lang, 15. Featured role In “Alice in Wonderland” at Mackillop Catholic College as well as a performing arts student. Attending Stage 2 screen course since early last year. “Mulan” has been my first Musical with Wyong Musical Theatre Company. The cast and directors have been wonderful and I love my musical fam.

Christiana Russell is an unusual mix of a human; she is in fact part mortal, part wizard. Her powers are activated through the hypnotic motions of song and dance. Watch as she casts a spell on the audience in her role of Subar-Tu. Life has not been easy, however, for young Christiana Russell. At an early age she realised that with great power comes great responsibility. She was partaking in a communal barn dance when all of a sudden her powers were activated. Everybody in the barn was instantly lifted into the air, their life in her hands. Her decision whether or not to spare their pathetic human lives has lead to this very moment in history. We’ll let you decide what she chose.

Abbey Callton: Acting is in my blood and having an opportunity to share this with other people is quite special. I'd love to thank all of the people who made this show possible.

This year he won the Eisteddfod in Drama for his hilarious depiction of “The Grinch”. Angus will continue to perform in musicals and pursue his passion for the Arts.

Morgan Lazaro: I have only been in musicals for a short time. I started with “Footloose” as “Coach Dunbar” from a surprise audition, I was nabbed out of the carpark while I was waiting for my brother to finish his audition! I am really grateful to the Wyong Musical Theatre Company for allowing me to play the part of Shan Yu as this will be my second and last junior show. I have loved meeting and working with everyone in this production, made so many new friends and can’t wait for the next one. I want to thank everyone who helped put this together and hope that everyone enjoys this show as much as we have putting it on for you .
