24th Annual Power Walk for Dress for Success By: Laura O’Sullivan

On June 27, 2015, the weather was gorgeous and the AWL team showed up in force for the 4th Annual Power Walk for Dress for Success.

Wearing AWL red, our team of 30 runners and walkers descended upon the new course winding along Brush Creek. AWL Board Member Laura O’Sullivan co-chaired the event with Delinda Davis from Wal-Mart. AWL members showed up to enjoy this fun event, some to test their training efforts, and others to enjoy the scenery.

Joel Nichols from 41 Action News took to the stage in Frank A. Theis Park to emcee the festivities. With a DJ spinning tunes, everyone got ready for the fun to begin. This event wouldn’t be the same without the annual Men in Heels Race. Jenny Redix Jordan arranged to take the male par-ticipants to new heights by arranging with UMKC Women’s Center to co-sponsor the extra-large heels for the Men in Heels Race. Joel Nichols joined the fun quickly admitting that it’s not so easy to run in heels! The winner walked away with the coveted Golden Heel, a gift certificate for a pedicure.

Walkers and runners warmed up with Zumba in the park before embarking on the scenic course. Runners headed out first with walkers as the second wave. Along the route, we spied Past President Athena Dickson enjoying the event with her son, Nathan. Hon. Janette Rodecap sped past her competition, and Sara Christenson conquered the course, as well. As everyone wound their way through The Plaza on Brush Creek on this beautiful day, it was hard to remember the ongoing deluge of rain of prior weeks.

Many thanks to AWL Board Member Shannon Johnson and the attorneys and families of Seigfreid Bingham who helped take our team to the next level! Thanks to all who participated and supported this great cause.

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote “the economic independence of disadvantaged women by pro-viding professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” The 4th Annual Power Walk for Dress for Success raised more than $50,000 for this worthy cause. Here’s what this money will accomplish: (1) $25 gives one woman the shoes to wear to a job interview; (2) $50 pays for a month’s worth of bus passes for her commute to work; and (3) $100 provides job skills training for her to find a job, earn a living wage, stay employed, and open a savings account.

Many disadvantaged Kansas City women will wear professional attire and have access to career development tools as a direct result of AWL’s involvement. To see some of these inspiring stories of success, follow Dress for Success www.facebook.com/dfsKansasCity on Facebook.

Brianne Thomas, Managing Partner at Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish LLC is a pas-sionate, energetic and award-winning litigator, specializing in personal injury and workers’

compensation cases; many of which have resulted in millions of dollars in awards and settlements for clients.

Thomas began her legal career in 2005 as a clerk with Boyd & Kenter P.C., which soon led to an associate position. At the firm, her experience shaped her into a self-described “ambitious, hard-working, loyal problem-solver,” which led to her current role as Managing Partner at Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish.

In 2013, Brianne led the firm’s merger with Mark E. Parrish, a top-tier civil litigation law firm. As a result, Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish is growing and expanding their practice areas under her direction.

Currently, Thomas serves on the Executive Committee of AWL and will lead the organization as president in 2017. In 2012, she won the President’s Award for achievement as a board member. She is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys. She was recently appointed to the 16th Circuit Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee by the Missouri Bar Board of Governors.

Within the community, she is a civic leader, volunteering for Jackson County Court Appointed Special Advocates and various local charities through her work with AWL. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Rainbow Center, a non-profit organization that serves children and adults with commu-nicative disorders.

Her leadership with Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish and the community have led to numerous awards, including being named a 2015 Rising Star by KC Business Magazine, which recognizes 30 outstanding leaders under the age of 40 in Kansas City’s creative, entrepreneurial, nonprofit and corporate com-munities. She was also voted “Best of the Bar” in 2013 and 2014 and has been recognized by The National Trial Lawyers as the “Top 40 Under 40.” In 2012, she was honored with the David J. Dixon Award by the Missouri Bar Foundation, which recognizes outstanding work in appellate advocacy by a young lawyer.

Distinguished, decorated, determined… Brianne Thomas is truly a “rising star” for Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish and the Greater Kansas City area.

always strive to leave a place better than I found it. I hope you do too. My inbox and phone line are always open to suggestions on what AWL can do to help women in the law and the com-munity. Just as it took 3/4 of the states to agree

that women should have the right to vote, you don’t have to go it alone. We are here to help in any way we can. In 1920, women were striving for equality. In 2015, let’s strive to excel!

Summer Social a Success!By: Hon. Courtney Wachal

Thank you to all who attended the summer social, held at Cleaver and Cork on Thursday, July 16, 2015. Step Up volunteers gathered to celebrate another successful year of assisting victims of domestic violence with their municipal court warrants and traffic violations. Donations were collected for “Henry’s Haul”, which provides hot wheels for patients recovering at Children’s Mercy. A special toast was made to honor Judge John Williams, who with his wife, AWL member and Step-Up co-founder Molly Williams, has volunteered for the Step Up program since its inception. Judge Williams celebrated his retirement on August 31, 2015. His tireless work and dedication to justice has been invaluable to Kansas City and to AWL. Thanks again to all who were able to participate!

5Leaps and Bounds for the Women and Men of Step-UpBy: Maureen Brady

On July 16, 2015, the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City was honored to sponsor the annual “Step-Up” Warrant Relief Program held in cooperation with the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Court. With the assistance of numerous volunteer attorneys from AWL, over 55 women and men were given a chance to dismiss outstanding warrants and fines in exchange for community service.

The program was held open to any abuse victims who sought protection from one of the Kansas City area shelters. The participants were provided with an attorney free of charge who advocated on their behalf to dismiss any outstanding warrants for traffic, parking and other infractions issued from the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Court. The Step-Up Program allowed the participants to wipe out their violation history and start anew.

The attorneys who volunteered for the program gave a day out of their regular practice to donate their time and efforts on behalf of the victims participating in the program. Volunteers within the AWL community were drawn from all areas of the law. It afforded attorneys who do not typically practice in criminal law or litigation to appear before the Court and advocate on behalf of their client. A great sense of civic pride is the reward for such compassion.

It is the cooperation with the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Court judges, prosecutors and staff which make this program so successful. The enthusiasm of the Court personnel is palpable and

humbling. Special recognition goes to Judicial Assistant Olivia Jones for coordinating Court personnel and setting up the logistics of the program. Municipal Prosecutor, Laura Dold, and AWL Board Member, Tracy Barnes, held a one hour CLE prior to beginning the program which gave volunteer attorney insight into helping the pro-gram participants.

The program is designed to help citizens of the community who are willing to provide community service in lieu of fines for traffic tickets. Over the years, many participants have built up numerous tickets. Several of the participants were moved to tears upon hearing that they would be able to dismiss warrants and fines in exchange for commu-nity service.

Following the program, AWL hosted a happy hour for all members and Court personnel. Judges and attorneys who gave of their time and talents to help the community were truly appreciated.

Local news station KSHB interviewed program organizer and AWL Board Member Maureen Brady. (http://www.kansascity.com/living/liv-columns-blogs/chow-town/article27144415.html) After airing the segment, numerous other community groups and potential partici-pants expressed their thanks and reaffirmed the need for this vital program to continue. All involved are thankful that the program was so successful and are looking forward to the 2016 Step-Up.

Henry’s Haul Huge Success!By: Nicole Fisher

A big THANK YOU to all who donated toy cars or money to purchase toy cars in support of Lucy’s Kids for Peace and The Kid Stitch to benefit Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics. It was the goal of AWL to gather at least 100 cars to donate to the toy drive, but in the end our members surpassed the goal and donated well over 1,000 cars!

The cars were donated in memory of a child who under-went cancer treatment at Children’s Mercy and loved playing with his toy cars. That child was named Henry and the goal of this event is to raise enough toy cars that every child at Children’s Mercy can have their own toy car as they seek treatment.

For more information about Henry’s Haul visit: www.thekidstitch.com Volunteers stand in front of the huge pile of cars donated by AWL Members.

Ashley Ricket was recently promoted to partner at Dollar Burns and Becker, L.C., a platinum sponsor of the Association for Women Lawyers of Kansas City. Ricket has served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Women Lawyers of Kansas City since 2013.

At Dollar Burns & Becker, Ricket repre-sents families in Missouri and Kansas, who

have been affected by nursing home abuse and neglect, medical malpractice, and daycare abuse and neglect. Ricket has worked on these cases since she started her career as an attorney. It was then she discovered abuse and neglect was the niche area she was interested in. “I felt that it was important to protect elders from abuse and neglect in nursing homes and children from the same abuse and neglect in daycares,” Ricket said. “At this point in their lives, both elders and children are at a fragile and vulnerable state and are in great need of a voice.”

In addition to nursing home abuse and daycare abuse, Ricket’s practice focuses on personal injury litigation including medical malpractice, wrongful death, and insurance bad faith. She has argued before the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District of Missouri and before the Supreme Court of Missouri. She has litigated cases in both state and federal courts in Missouri and Kansas, the Federal Court of Claims, the Supreme Court of Missouri, and the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District of Missouri, and the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento. In addition, Ricket has litigated vaccine cases before the United States Federal Court of Claims in Washington, D.C.

In 2012, Ricket was selected by Missouri

Judges and her peers to receive Missouri Lawyers Weekly’s Rising Star Award, awarded to women lawyers under the age of 40 who have already made a difference in the justice system of Missouri. Also in 2012, she was recognized as an Up and Coming Lawyer by Missouri Lawyers Weekly, awarded to attorneys under the age of 40 who epitomize excellence in the legal community and are identified as a leader in the community-at-large. From 2012 through 2015, Ashley has also been named to the National Trial Lawyers 40 Under 40 list and recognized by Super Lawyers for Missouri and Kansas. Ricket has been named in Kansas City Business Journal’s Best of the Bar list from 2013 through 2015.

Ricket received her law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2006. While in law school, Ricket was a member of the Law Review Journal. Ashley is licensed to practice in both Missouri and Kansas. She is a member of the Board of Governors for the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys. Ricket has written many amicus briefs on behalf of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys (MATA). Ricket is also a published author in the Missouri Bar Journal as well as the Journal of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys.

7CONNECTIONS UPDATE By: Tracy Barnes

It’s no surprise that the Connections men-toring group is full of talented, award-winning women. But the amount of exciting professional updates in this article truly shows just how astounding these ladies are. Additionally, the classes met at Season’s 52 for individual group outings and the atmosphere proved to be perfect for catching up on all that had happened since the last group get-togethers several months ago.

The Class of 2015 has some well-deserving award winners. Mentor Nicole Fisher and Mentee Tiffannie Kennedy will both receive the 2015 Missouri Lawyer’s Weekly “Up & Coming” Award. They will be honored at a luncheon held in October in St. Louis, Missouri. You may remember that Shauna Alexander welcomed daughter Anya Rose Alexander in May. Now, three months old, Shauna is taking some time away to focus on her two daughters.

The Class of 2014 also has some big award-winners. Mentor Kelly McCambridge was named Best of the Bar for Employment Law, as well as a SuperLawyer. Mentor Aubrey Gann-Redmon just defended a law firm in a probate malpractice case and received an excellent settlement result for her client. She also received the SuperLawyers “Rising Star” award for the third year in a row, as well as, achieving the Best of the Bar award for the second year in a row for her work in probate.

Mentor Kate Nolan was recently named Vice President of Legal and Case Services at Jackson County CASA after previously serving as the Director of Legal Services. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) work to train volunteers to represent the best interest of abused and neglected children and the Jackson County chapter will help close to 1,200 children in family court this year alone.

Mentee Callie Pippen Raitinger also received the 2015 Missouri Lawyer’s Weekly “Up & Coming” Award. Mentee Tracy Barnes will be the incoming Vice Chair of the Municipal Court Committee for the upcoming year for KCMBA. Tracy also received the SuperLawyers “Rising Star”

award. Tracy has been hard at work orga-nizing the 20th Annual AWL/AWLF “I’m Not Serious About Golf” Tournament, to be held on September 25, 2015, and is seeking hole sponsors and goodie bag and raffle donations for the tournament. If you are interested in sponsoring or donating, please email Tracy at [email protected]. And, don’t forget to register as a player in Kansas City’s Premier Golf Tournament! You can register at http://awlf.formstack.com/forms/awlawlfs_premier_2015_sporting_event.

The Class of 2013 has a special award-winner. Heather Hardinger also received the Missouri Lawyer’s Weekly “Up & Coming” Award. Brooke Blake gave a LinkedIn presentation and workshop at the Women’s Employment Network on July 29, which included assisting the women in setting up their own LinkedIn profiles to assist in their job searches. The presentation was so successful, Brooke has been asked to speak three additional times over the course of the year.
