This Month’s Highlights

The Boomer List: American MastersTuesday, September 23 at 9pm

The baby boomer generation (1946-1964) has changed our world. This program documents this influential generation through the lives of 19 famous boomers—one born each year of the baby boom—including New Age guru Deepak Chopra, singer-songwriter Billy Joel, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, and environmentalist Erin Brockovich.

POVMondays at 10pm (except 9/15)

After Tiller (9/1) is a probing portrait of the four doctors in the United States who perform third-trimester abortions in the wake of the assassination of Dr. George Tiller. The Genius of Marian (9/8) is an emotionally complex story about one family’s struggle to come to terms with their mother’s Alzheimer’s disease. Koch (9/22) reveals that Mayor Ed Koch was more than the blunt, funny man New Yorkers either loved or hated.

NOVAWednesdays at 9pm (except 9/17)

Diseases that were eradicated a generation ago—whooping cough, measles, mumps—are returning in part because parents aren’t getting their children’s vaccinated. Vaccines: Calling the Shots (9/10) explores the science behind vaccinations. Rise of the Hackers (9/24) investigates how a new global geek squad is harnessing cutting-edge science to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals who seek to steal our personal information.

Ed Koch

Deepak Chopra

American Experience: The Big BurnTuesday, September 9 at 9pm

In the summer of 1910, a wildfire devoured more than three million acres across the Northern Rockies, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. The Big Burn is a cautionary tale of heroism, arrogance, and ultimately humility in the face of nature’s power.

Live from Lincoln Center: Sweeney ToddFriday, September 26 at 9pm

The New York Philharmonic’s acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was staged to a sold-out crowd at Avery Fisher Hall. The musical tells the story of a barber who, with Mrs. Lovett the piemaker, seeks vengeance on what he considers a merciless world. The cast features bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett.

MAKERS: Women in ComedyTuesday, September 30 at 9pm

The MAKERS series spotlights women who transformed the landscape of their chosen vocations. This installment tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from groundbreaking 1970s sitcoms like Maude to women of the 1980s American comedy club boom to today’s multifaceted landscape. Contemporary comics including Joan Rivers and Ellen DeGeneres talk about where women started in this competitive, male-dominated profession and where they are determined to go.

Finding Your RootsTuesday, September 30 at 8pm

Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. delves into race, culture, and identity through genealogy, finding new ways to, as he says, “get into the DNA of American culture.” In Born Champions, Billie Jean King learns the story of her grandmother, who had kept her orphan status a secret; Derek Jeter confronts his ancestors’ lives as slaves; and Rebecca Lobo finds out that her Spanish ancestor fought side by side with a famous revolutionary.

Masterpiece Classic: The Paradise, Season 2 Sunday, September 28 at 9pm

On the brink of happiness at the end of last season, Victorian-era retail genius John Moray and his “little champion” Denise, find true love a bumpy ride as Katherine and her new husband scheme to wreck their lives. Joanna Vanderham stars as Denise, with Emun Elliott as Moray.

Renowned double bassist Murray Grodner joins George Walker for a rare interview. Mr. Groder’s first orchestral position was in 1941 under conductor Antal Dorati. At age 22 during the second world war, he performed in a symphonette with members of the Fine Arts Quartet, the New York Philharmonic, and with pianists Gyorgy Sandor and Joseph Levine.

Mr. Grodner has performed with such organizations as the Pitts-burgh Symphony under Fritz Reiner and the NBC Symphony un-der Arturo Toscanini. He began teaching at IU in 1955 as professor of double bass, and he is now a professor emeritus at the Jacobs School of Music. He was the president and founder of Lemur Music, a company that served double bassists worldwide. He is the author of several publications, including the books Comprehensive Catalog of Music, Books, Recordings & Videos for the Double Bass, and A Double Bassist’s Guide to Refining Performance Practice.

International Violin Competition of IndianapolisWednesday and Thursday, September 17 and 18, 8 p.m.

Live from the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center—the Classical Finals of International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

Held every four years, “The Indianapolis” brings together the world’s most brilliant young violinists to the capital city for a 17-day competition and celebration of the violin. This year, 40 young artists will come to Indianapolis to perform a broad survey of the violin repertoire before a panel of judges led by Jaime Laredo. Since the first competition in 1982, laureates have gone on to successful careers as concert violinists, recording artists, concertmasters, and chamber musicians. Join us for the competition regarded as “the Olympics of the violin.”

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History is the new documentary by Ken Burns airing for seven consecutive nights on WTIU. It weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt—members of one of the most influential families in American politics. The film follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. During those years, Theodore became the 26th president of the United States, and his niece Eleanor married his fifth cousin Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government, and redefined the role of the United States in the world.

The series encompasses history the Roosevelts helped to make—the creation of National Parks

and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Germany, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world. It is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling, and personal courage.

Meryl Streep portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from her personal letters and writings, Paul Giamatti is the voice of Theodore Roosevelt, and Edward Herrmann is the voice of FDR. The all-star cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Philip Bosco, Keith Carradine, Kevin Conway, Pamela Reed, Ed Harris, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Amy Madigan, Carl Lumbly, Billy Bob Thornton, and the late Eli Wallach.
