PERIYA PURANAM
Periya Puranam is the poetic compilation of the 63 Nayanmars devotion to Lord Shiva. It is composed by/ written by Chekkizar Peruman, during the 12th Century. It reveals the path that all 63 Nayanmars took to pray to Lord Shiva and how they achieved the Paramaatma, all through their undying devotion to Lord Shiva and all his devotees. Besides being a Minister in the Royal palace of Chola King Kulothunga Chola, Chekkizar himself was a poet and also a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
Periya Puranam is a poetic composition of life history of the devotees. The literature is found to be of highest order. Later it was also considered as the 5th Veda for the Shaivites. The song praises the devotees for the path they took, to pray to Lord Shiva. Not all the Nayanmars were scholars. Though some are learned scholars, some were Kings, while many others are normal people, who excelled only in the way they prayed / showed their devotion to Lord Shiva. In their undying bhakthi, they showed how one could reach God and how God comes in one’s service when in need. These Shaivites just followed their normal prescribed way of living, i.e. their Profession, as told in their caste system, (the basic differentiation of people based on their work), but differed in the way of praying to God.
It is said that, Chekkizar wanted to change his Kings interest from Jivaka Chintamani (worldly pleasures) to God’s way. So the King challenged him, which made him to compose a poem of all the Shaiva saints (followers of Lord Shiva) called the Periya Puranam. Chekkizar composed it in the halls of the Thousand pillars Temple- Chidambaram Nataraja Temple in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.
