Bugatti BallEvening of Hope 2011

An event that benefi ted the American Cancer Societywww.BugattiBall.com

e Bugatti Ball Evening of Hope Gala on August 6th was a night toremember. We raised over $160,000 for the programs and services of the Ameri-can Cancer Society. e event was a sell out and guests attended from each city in our County. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends, high school classmates and clients - the Bugatti Ball’s success was due in large part to their signi cant contributions as Sponsors, Underwriters, Donors andVolunteers. I give a breathtaking salute to my close friends Patrick Warburton and Marcella Detroit whose talent ensured the success of this stunning event! I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to co-chair this wonderful and inspiring celebration with Jacqui Irwin. e proceeds from the Bugatti Ball will have a direct impact on improving the lives of cancer patients and caregiv-ers in Ventura County. Together with millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well and get well, by nding cures, and by ghting back. ank you for your participation in making this work possible.

Sincerely, Rosemary Allison

The bowtie set has no business raising earthworms. This is the patchouli-scented passion of neo-hippies, the apex of dedica-tion for dirt lovers from California to Katmandu. You’re about

as likely to find an executive fingering a steamy, organic porridge of humus and worm manure as you are to see Birkenstocks in the board-room. No, a compost bin is no place for a corporate suit.

But don’t tell John Distad (p. 23). Apparently he didn’t get that memo. The bowtie wearing VP at a local financial firm—indeed, not just a corporate guy in a bowtie, but one who works in the hidebound financial sector—alternates between the dung-rich world of big money and a backyard that screams, as writer Andrea Kitay puts it, “closet beatnik.”

While John is in many ways an ideal profile subject for Ventana, this piece almost didn’t make the editorial cut. The pitch came loop-ing at us from an odd angle; we didn’t swing at it for months. What ultimately gave the story legs wasn’t his bowtie or the incongruity of his buttoned-down professional life and his rustic passions, but the compre-hensiveness of his approach to do-it-yourself gardening.

Quite simply, when it comes to backyard gumption John Distad is doing everything right, from breathing new life into worthy old machin-ery to farming worms, chipping yard waste into mulch, and collecting rainwater. And in that sense he is, as I mentioned above, a perfect character for a Ventura County lifestyle magazine: local, successful yet decidedly down to earth, clever, casual, quirky with a unique sense of style. I have mixed feelings about guys like John. They are an inspiration. They’re also a wakeup slap—a stinging reminder that I don’t do nearly

enough around my own home.If you’ve read this section with any regularity over the years, you

know I have a pet aversion to the mundane. Mark Storer’s article about stone (p. 34) is a direct product of that aversion. Rather than flood the book with a sprawl of typical Home & Garden features, we rolled the dice on a subject whose layers of depth penetrate to the earth’s core and rise to Himalayan peaks.

The plan was to build an article around two extremes, counterbalanc-ing the polished stonework in a contemporary house with the rustic, ancient feeling sculptures of Ventura artist Paul Lindhard. To be sure, it would have been easier to fill pages with boilerplate Nesting stories. Stone, after all, is no light subject. Volumes of books have been written in its honor, from geology to poetry. It is a symbol and one of the most overplayed metaphors in all of literature: rolling through the ages, a timeless cliché that gathers no moss.

I often compare the editorial process to construction—building a magazine. There’s a culinary parallel too, particularly within each story. Like the John Distad profile, the stone article has a certain yin yang appeal, an element of contrast that adds to its complexity. Of course, like food, balance and presentation come into play as well.

Yes, it would have been considerably easier to fill the pages ahead with architectural imagery and descriptions of home interiors. But we like to think you appreciate a bit more flavor.

It’s the end of the workday and architect Jeffrey Weinstein is enjoying a glass of wine with his wife, Wendy Wilson, in the kitch-

en he designed for her. “It’s the first single-family home I’ve ever designed,” says Jeffrey, who works mostly on commercial projects and green retrofits. “I always built for other people.”

The 2,500-square-foot three-bedroom con-temporary ranch home was several years in the making—a labor of love that started with a week-end visit to Ojai in 1996. They knew right away it’s where they wanted to be. “[Ojai] has a natural attractiveness. It’s very calming,” says Wendy, a personal chef and a contract coordinator for a restaurant franchise business. She says that living in Santa Monica gave them “less and less time for enjoying life,” so in 1998 she and Jeffrey bought the one-acre property, which at the time had an older three-bedroom home.

Over the years, they leased out the property while Jeffrey worked on design ideas, biding their time until they could afford to make the big leap from city life. “We were patient,” says Jeffrey, who was eager to see their sons, now 11 and 12, raised in a small town.

Realizing it was going to be more affordable to build a house from the ground up than to remodel the aging 1955 home, they offered to sell the house for just one dollar—land not included. The only other catch was that it needed to be hauled away in time for construction to begin.

“I called every church, every nonprofit, every organization I could think of … I couldn’t give it away,” says Jeffrey, shaking his head. Ultimately, they had no choice but to demolish it so building could begin.

Construction was completed in 2008, and in 2010 the fam-ily moved from their 1,500-square-foot condo in Santa Monica into their new Ojai home. The exterior features a pitched metal roof, redwood siding, and a wrap-around deck off the back with an outdoor stone fireplace. Inside there are two more fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the master bedroom, Brazilian cherry floors in the family room, and large windows at every turn to bring in natural light. The living room has 20-foot-high ceilings featuring Douglas fir and slate blue porcelain tile floors that look just like stone. The tile floors continue into the kitch-

en, the home’s focal point.Jeffrey designed the exhibition-style kitchen for Wendy, a clas-

sically trained personal chef. She now has the ability to conduct cooking classes in a space that allows her to prepare meals while facing an audience.

The six-burner cook top is centered on a large, curved island with a blue-speckled Silestone countertop that seats four. Equipped with custom-made cherry cabinetry, a German-engineered built-in spice rack, and built-in Thermador and KitchenAid stainless steel appliances, the kitchen’s most impressive design feature is the 10-foot-high stainless steel exhaust flue and hood. “I had to per-suade the builder that it could be done,” says Jeffrey, pointing up to the top of the hood. “The only downside is you have to get up there and clean it.”

One final artistic touch was recently added to the recessed, curved upper wall of the kitchen where a colorful seven-by-12-foot mural was installed. The couple commissioned local artist Ruben Franco to create a scene that would depict one of Ojai’s best-known crops. “I definitely wanted to have orange trees,” says Wendy of the

mural, which is reminiscent of the vintage orange crate label art of the early twentieth century.

In addition to hosting cooking classes, Wendy bakes the challah bread for the local Jewish temple. Jeffrey has even been known to dabble in the kitchen on occasion, making French toast from her bread. And though Wendy’s favorite culinary creations tend toward Thai, Korean, Indian, and other ethnic cuisines, Jeffrey’s favorite is classic American home cooking at its best: “Key lime pie!” he says with a smile. v

The Weinstein-Wilson home will be featured as part of the annual Holiday Home Look In tour, put on by the Ojai Festival Women’s Committee to raise funds for the Ojai Music Festival. The 2011 event takes place on November 19 and 20. Details online at ojaifestival.org.

Camarillo - Hollywood

Page 23: September 2011: Fall Home + Garden Issue

By all appearances, John Distad is a regu-lar Joe. A corporate kind of guy, he lives the good life in the semi-rural hills above Camarillo. From

the manicured wood-frame home he shares with wife, Patti, to his job at the Ventura financial firm Crowell, Weedon & Co. where he spends the work week manag-ing portfolios for clients, Distad looks pretty darn, well, average. But behind the proper suit and trademark bow-tie is an alternate persona. A closet beatnik who spends his weekends clad in a rumpled work shirt and baseball cap scouring farmers’ markets and supply stores for handy cast-offs and intriguing gizmos. Following him on a recent tour of his garden and orchard, I ask about the whys and wherefores of the bowties. Distad shrugs and laughs, “It just sort of happened, I guess. Other than Louis Farrakhan and [TV weatherman] George Fishbeck, there aren’t many of us.”

Or maybe it’s because bowties are smaller and more efficient. And efficiency is a critical factor in the innova-tion and implementation of gardening techniques that Distad uses in the never-ending effort to reduce his fam-ily’s ecological footprint. Half farmer and half inventor, Distad spends his free time calculating the water flow to his gutter-fed 1,100-gallon rainwater collection barrel, or chipping garden and orchard trimmings in the vintage ‘65 Roto-Hoe Cut ‘N Shred chipper he traded with a neighbor for a ‘65 Charles Krug Cabernet. “I’m pretty sure I got the better end of that deal,” he says proudly.

For the last two years, during which he overhauled his garden, Distad has been consumed by a flurry of repurposing, fashioning tools and toys out of promis-ing looking pieces of junk. He shows me the horseshoe pit he fashioned from an axle of his son’s 1970 VW Squareback. Pole beans and cucumbers vines climb a fence made of the metal he saved when he redid his

porch and deck with Trex. And tucked back in the corner of the yard is the most powerful tool in his arsenal, and the real force behind a flourishing garden: a compact, three-bucket compost system in which an army of specialized worms keeps each buck-etful of kitchen cuttings moving from one stage to the next, a system that produces usable compost in record time.

The garden is so productive, in fact, that Distad grows enough not just for his fam-ily, but also for friends and colleagues. Showing me the buckets and the final product, he explains the secret of his success. “It’s an ongoing operation, lasting almost all year long. I can wheelbarrow the stuff out almost any time of year, and by next spring I will have added four to six inches of this rich stuff in the main garden areas. I rototill it into the soil for a huge improvement.” Except for the winter months, when the temperature drops below 41 degrees and natural composting almost stops, he can work nonstop.

According to Distad, his feel for farming—and for fiddling with ways to do it bet-

ter and faster—is in his genes. “My ancestors were farmers from Norway who emigrat-ed to South Dakota to farm grain and manage livestock,” he says. “And I have a natural curiosity, which extends to the mechanical. Plus, I really hate green beans out of a can.”

For this businessman with a graduate degree in systems management, stream-lining the handling of yard and orchard waste—by chipping it into reusable frag-ments—is a significant way to lessen the impact on local landfills. Ongoing appli-cations of natural mulch not only reduce the majority of weeds, but also improve the quality of Camarillo’s heavy clay soils, he tells me. “Chipping is a constant thing, but there are always plenty of places to put it. Weeds don’t have as good a chance at getting started, and if they do they’re rooted in the heavy mulch and can be easily pulled by hand,” he explains.

But what intrigues me most is Distad’s system of collecting the rain and so-called gray water that would otherwise go into city drains. During heavy winter rains, the water flows off the roof and into collection barrels, which then are pumped into a 1,100-gallon collection barrel. From here, Distad has rigged both systems to funnel water into the existing sprinkler system in the orchard and gardens. “This year we had so much rain I could have filled up two more barrels,” he explains. “And they were surprisingly easy to install. I bought the bigger one at a local garden show and installed it in less than an hour.”

Gizmos and creepy crawlies aside, the Distad place is a gardener’s dream come true. Forty-odd Haas avocado trees stretch along rows on the gentle slope along the back, and rock paths meander among islands of vegetables tucked into raised beds. Heirloom cherry tomatoes, hot and green chilies, and artichokes sprout alongside lettuce, butternut squash, eggplant, and radishes. “I’m always looking for places I

can grow more vegetables,” he says, “but Patti likes to grow flowers. If I can’t eat it, I’m not wild about watering it. See!” he chuckles, pointing to a new octagonal raised bed, “she snuck some flowers in that one too.”

For some visitors—friends and neighbors entranced by the site—vegetables and flowers are as pleasant to muse upon as to eat. For them, John and Patti created an outdoor seating area with a tiled fireplace adjacent to a patch of grass. In the corner, an inviting swing with comfy pillows rests in the shade of several podocarpus trees. Nearby, a ping-pong table invites the younger set to play. Meanwhile, John and Patti have the next few months set aside to re-organize some of the beds, pull stray weeds, and spruce up the paths. In spring 2012 the Distad garden will be showcased in the Camarillo Hospice garden tour, and they want to be ready. v

Top, from lefT: John takes a practical approach to edible gardening. He traded a bottle of ’65 Charles Krug Cabernet for a Roto-Hoe chipper of the

same year. Patty, meanwhile, focuses on flowers. Together they’ve created a backyard fantasy of trickling fountains, fruits and vegetables, perennial blooms,

and cozy seating areas. This jasmine-laced arbor (top right) affords sweeping views of the property as well as a shady respite.

righT: The Distad home has been showcased on several local garden tours. In spring 2012, it will again be featured as part of a benefit for Camarillo Hospice.

PatiosOutdoor living has always been a part of our heritage here in California. From the early days of Sunset magazine to today’s Dwell, Californians have desired a seamless approach to integrating the outdoors with their interior. Taking your floor from inside to outside used to mean that you gave up style or performance in one area as a trade off for consistency. This is no longer the case as our collection of concrete, stone and glass allows you to have it all.

Commercially built, with livable, yet affordable, luxury design in mind, we specialize in materials that are suited to either zone. Buena offers you the opportunity to design your terrain – pool coping + waterlines; bbq’s + facades; flooring as comfortable outside as it is in – with high-grade materials. In Ken Follet’s superb novel “The Pillars of the Earth,” he tells the story of an English cathedral built over three generations in the 12th century. Follet follows the family at the heart of his fictional novel, which is set against the backdrop of historical events. The book is

filled with interesting characters and fascinating turns, lots of sex and death, and, at the heart of it all, a cathedral made of stone. Lots of stone.

Perhaps the world’s oldest building material, stone has come in and out of vogue as ages pass and aesthetics change. Granite countertops became all the rage around 20 years ago, according to David Askar of Pacific Stoneworks in Ventura, coinciding with the rise of an American foodie culture. Homeowners wanted something classic and long lasting, giving at least the perception of permanence while providing a kind of new aesthetic.

“Stone, particularly granite, has a practicality and function while also having a real artistic beauty,” Askar said. “It’s fairly impervious to heat, and quarrying technology has gotten much bet-ter. We’re seeing new colors of granite, blues and greens, that we didn’t have before.”

Larry and Roxanne Pearson are clients of Pacific Stoneworks who began a major renovation on their Ventura Keys home in 2002. They didn’t just want some new paint and carpet, either. The Pearsons added a third story, a kind of great room shaped overall like a boat with the daily sea breeze blowing along its prow. Beyond the nautical style, two things punctuate the room’s unique design: it is almost entirely white, and the floor is covered with quartz tiles. In fact, the Pearson’s whole house is an homage to stone of various kinds, from soapstone to granite to quartz to a large, marble dining room table covered in orthoceras fossils.

The permanent aesthetic of stone

A swirling stair railing connects levels in the three-story house. Tinted windows moderate the

intense coastal glare, while richly-colored Brazilian Tigerwood

“We worked with Ted Temple of Temple & Associates here in Ventura,” said Roxanne. “We designed [the house] over the course of three years, between 2002 and 2005, while we were still living in Bakersfield.” Larry was teaching high school algebra there and Roxanne was an in-demand portrait photog-rapher, but the couple, who bought their Keys home in 1995, had no intentions of staying inland. “We always knew we would retire here,” Roxanne said. “Larry’s a fourth genera-tion Venturan, and I’m third generation. We wanted to take advantage of this location.” The Pearsons’ beloved boat floats in the Keys chan-nel off the back patio; the Pacific Ocean is visi-ble from the front of the house. In the distance, the iconic Two Trees cap the city’s heights.

But the house wasn’t always so ideal. “It was essentially a box when we moved in,” Roxanne said, pointing out curves where there were once straight edges and flat walls. “It kind of went against everything this area is about,” said Larry, “the ocean and the movement associated with that. We knew we wanted to soften those edges and bring that feeling of waves into the house.”

The bottom floor, particularly the entryway, no longer has those straight edges. “We made structural changes to the walls and put in flow and rounded edges,” said Roxanne. “Larry’s a swimmer and a surfer, so you can see the shapes of surfboards along the downstairs wet bar and even the kitchen counter.”

The dark gray tile of the bottom floor gives

OppOsite: A Moroccan marble slab embedded with 400 million-year-old orthoc-eras fossils finds new life as a dining table in the Ventura

Keys home of Larry and Roxanne Pearson.

Right: An ocean theme is pervasive throughout the Pearson’s contemporary

house. Here, black granite on a radius takes on the shape

of a surfboard, complete with cobalt “stringer” and

“single fin” faucet.

way as you climb the spiral staircase to the second floor, which is a lighter colored tile called ostrich gray. But the guest bathroom on the second floor features the white quartz tiles again, giving a hint of what’s to come at the top of the stairs. The bottom floor is open in the front, too, all the way to the ceiling of the third floor. “When you look down from up there, you get the effect of dark to light as you go up in the house,” Roxanne said.

But if you ask the crew at Pacific Stoneworks, the master bath is the

home’s proudest feature. Counters of metal laminate with a brush design reminiscent of sea grass are covered with granite tops, and the shower, sink, and separate tub are all granite as well. “We don’t take any shortcuts,” said Askar. “And we’re able to get the joints and spaces between pieces down to 1/16 of an inch.” The company uses a computer assisted drawing program to create what they call a digital template of the space and employs water jet stone cutting to create more exact measurements, a necessity when it comes to custom home manufacturing. The result of the artisan workmanship is

that the Pearson’s bathroom takes remarkably cold and hard materials—metal, granite, and tile—and makes them soft and inviting.

That’s the counterintuitive thing about working with stone, according to Paul Lindhard, the Ventura-based stoneworker and sculptor who founded Art City. Along with some 20 other artists on-site, Lindhard creates his mas-terpieces not on a canvas in a salon, but on a dirty yard with silica dust float-ing about and power tools in abundant supply.

“It’s a very peaceful medium,” said Lindhard. “On the surface, it may seem kind of obdurate, but you slow down, breathe, and learn to work with the stone, not against it. You don’t get second chances with a slab of granite.”

Private parties and government agencies all over Ventura County have commissioned Lindhard to create some very memorable and very lasting pieces of art. He’s even in the process of chipping away at a new “Welcome to Ventura” sign made of Sierra orange calcite that will sit on granite pillars and mark the western entry into the city.

Above: Though textur-ally scarred from the

quarrying process, the basalt and onyx that Paul

Lindhard used in this “Drunken Lantern” sculp-

ture maintains much of its original nature.

Top cenTer: In the Pearson’s master bath, gray granite mixes with

a reed-patterned cabinet reminiscent of sea grass.

opposiTe: Again the oceanic theme, as ostrich gray slate in the rounded

entryway recreates the swirl of a black sand

beach during ebb tide.

“It’s a very peaceful medium. On the surface, it may seem kind of obdurate, but you slow down, breathe, and learn to work with the stone,

not against it. You don’t get second chances with a slab of granite.”

“I’m moved by the history and nature of stone,” said Lindhard. “Its nature and where it came from are fascinating to me. I’ll get as excited as anyone to see a green vein in a slab of granite, but there’s a story there, too.”

Lindhard recently was able to order some 1,500 pieces of Kansas limestone, commonly referred to as “post rock” for its prevalence in use as fence posts all over the nation’s flattest state. Each piece is between four and six feet tall and colored in faded oranges, browns, and white. The stone is being used in a num-ber of ways, including as part of an outdoor set of bench seats, podium, and lectern for Sheridan Way School in Ventura.

Art City and Pacific Stoneworks actually used to share space (“We’re on the caveman end of that equation,” joked Lindhard), and while Art City has moved a couple blocks north of the original location, Lindhard and Stoneworks owner Kent Hardley still work together when possible.

The English cathedrals of Follet’s fictional novel are all too real, having been painstakingly built over hundreds of years even as technology progressed making stone less difficult to quarry and more interesting to look at. Its permanence is, per-haps, an illusion. Nothing lasts forever, after all. But perhaps it’s just the fact that it will last longer than we do that makes us want to have it in our lives. v

The work of Ventura-based sculptor Paul Lindhard (top right) suggests a reverence for stone as an artis-tic medium capable of evoking a powerful spirit of place, as well as the passage of time. This 14-foot-tall “Light Cairn” (left) is made with free-stacked and glued New Mexico travertine blocks. Lindhard’s artwork is equally at home indoors; above, an exhibit at the Artists’ Union Gallery, Ventura. (venturaartistsunion.org)

“I don’t copy what’s new... I create what’s next!”

—Bob Lynn

The bride who commissioned this wedding ring brought me a Peridot that had

been cut from a rough that was part of a meteorite.

This gem had literally fallen out of the sky! The inclusions in the Peridot made the gem

very fragile. So to subject it to the stresses that normal wear would bring if it were set into prongs was out of the question. The standard answer is to

set the gem in a half-bezel setting like we have here by hammering the bezel tight to the gem. Unfortunately, that hammering would certainly break the gem. We literally were between a “stony” meteor and a hard spot.

I engineered a design that would be esthetically correct, protect the gem during wear as much as possible, and not subject it to breakage during setting. Jewelers all know you can’t heat Peridot without ruining it, yet I literally welded the gem into the ring — and didn’t affect it. Another of my “Magic” setting jobs!

The ring is in 18K yellow gold and set with yellow Sapphires on the shoulders. She saw the finished ring for the first time a few hours ago and just loved it!

I would love to design the ring of your dreams, please call me.
