‘Night with the Trams’A rare opportunity to spend an evening at the St Kilda Tram-way Museum and watch the sunset over the water, with the city lights in the background, all from the comfort of our ex-clusive use tram.

The evening, which starts at 6pm on Saturday 23rd Octo-ber, goes through until we get tired or they kick us out! The special entry includes tram rides, BBQ and old time movies. Soak up the great atmosphere and relive the old days when these vintage trams ran through the streets of Adelaide. Enjoy the luxury of travelling in the magnificent ‘Restaurant Tram’ with its decorative lights, leadlight windows and wooden pan-neling.

The all inclusive entry fee includes:

Tram rides - at our convenience. Includes stops looking across the water at the lights of Adelaide.

BBQ - sausages, meat pattie, onions, bread and a soft drink (additional soft drinks cost $1.50). Plus tea or coffee.

Film show - up to 15 short films of transport/general interest from the 1930s through to the late 1960s. Hopefully included will be the English classic ‘Night Mail’ (1936), ‘By Hydrofoil to London’ (1962), Australian Movie Magazine (includes build-ing Sydney underground and opening of Kingsford Smith Air-port), This Week in Britain and Australian Magazine to name just a few. See films as they used to be shown!

The tramway museum volunteers are putting on this special event just for us so it is not something you can do everyday. Deposits are not required but we do need numbers to enable them to cater appropriately. Don’t miss out.

If you intend going please let Steve or Anne McNicol know by the 8th October at the latest by phoning 8255 9446 (leave a message on the answering machine) or email: [email protected] - just leave your surname and most important the number in your car/group and how many/if any do NOT want the BBQ.

Entry (payable on the day): $15.00 for all (sorry no conces-sions) except, Vegetarions/Special dietary (BYO food): $10.00

Children under 12 years of age: Free

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF MORRIS MOTORS

Morris 100 Rally,C/O 33 Arcadia Road, Galston NSW 2159

Morris 100 National Rally CanberraCentenary Celebration Of The Production Of The First Morris Car.

We wish to give you advance notice of our intention to conduct The Morris 100 Rally at Canberra fromFriday 19th April 2013 to Monday 22nd April 2013. The Morris 100 Rally will celebrate the centenary of theproduction of the First Morris Car in 1913. It is our pleasure to invite your club and its members to participate.

The first Morris car produced by William R. Morris (later Lord Nuffield) came off the production line atOxford, England in April 1913. This car was a two seat Morris Oxford which was powered by an 8.9 hpengine and was priced at 165 Pounds. From this beginning ultimately developed the Nuffield Organisation(then British Motor Corporation) which produced the Morris, MG, Wolseley, Riley, and Austin marques. Tocelebrate the centenary of this event the Morris Register of NSW intends to host a National Centenary Rallyin Canberra to be called The Morris 100 Rally.

The Morris 100 Rally will be open to all Morris and Nuffield/BMC vehicles produced by firms which wereowned or directed by Lord Nuffield.

Canberra was chosen as the venue for this national event because it is the Nation’s capital.

By co-incidence 2013 is also the Centenary Year of the Naming of Canberra. The ACT Government will beconducting the Canberra 100 Celebration throughout the year. Our organizing committee has applied to theCanberra 100 Taskforce to have the Morris 100 Rally included in their program on the grounds that vehiclesbuilt by Lord Nuffield played a major role in the development of family motoring and commercial vehicletransport in this country.

The program for this event is still in the preliminary stages of planning. It is expected that a wide variety ofvehicles will participate in this rally. Because of the various performance capabilities of these vehicles aprogram of “runs” will be devised to suit the performance capabilities of participating vehicles.

We look forward to your participation in this event. If member/s of your club would like to participate in thisevent they are to complete a copy of the attached intent form and return it to the Morris 100 Rally Committee. This information will assist us with planning the event. Your assistance in making copies of the intent formavailable to your members will be appreciated.

We are also considering a five day tour for interested participants. The tour will start from Canberra onMonday 22nd and return to Canberra on Friday 25th of April. The route for this tour has not yet been finalized.People who might be interested in joining in are asked to indicate their interest on the accompanying form.

Yours faithfully

September 2010 Page 8Rocker Cover Races, July 2010 It was a wet and windy day as 20 hardy souls left the clubrooms for a leisurely run towards Port Adelaide. Barry had his shiny Rolls Royce out for its christening, it was a very smooth ride by all accounts.A lot of people got lost – took wrong turns. A navigating school is needed!!Back at the clubrooms Arthur Doecke and Jacob Borgas had the barbie firing and were doing a fine cooking job. Well done boys. Judith and Wendy organised the kitchen. Thanks girls. We had about 20 racers nominated with a few new ones. They are getting flashier every year. Arthur Doecke was again the fastest racer, but there was a lot of good competition this year. Well done Arthur. As Arthur has won 3 out of 4 years he gets to keep the trophy.Start building for next year. We might have a prize for the prettiest next year. Thanks to James Borgas for starting the races. Thanks to the club for putting on the lunch, it was great.

Ladies Day

Before going to Europe on business, a man drives his Rolls-Royce to a downtown Sydney bank and asks for an immediate loan of $5,000.

The loan officer, taken aback, requests collateral. “Well then, here are the keys to my Rolls-Royce,” the man says. The loan officer promptly has the car driven into the bank’s underground parking for safe keeping and gives the man $5,000.

Two weeks later, the man walks through the bank’s doors and asks to settle up his loan and get his car back. “That will be $5,000 in principal and $15.40 in interest,” the loan officer says. The man writes out a cheque and starts to walk away. “Wait sir,” the loan officer says. “You’re a millionaire. Why in the world would you need to borrow $5,000?”

The man smiles, “Where else could I find a safer place to park my Rolls-Royce in Sydney for two weeks and pay only $15.40?”

August Ladies Day was a tour of Haigh’s Choco-late Factory situated on Greenhill Road, Unley.

Eight ladies and two men gathered to see how their choco-late is produced. We were given a sample of the milk and the more refined dark chocolate by our tour guide to ap-preciate the slightly different way of making the two types of chocolate.

In the factory we watched them putting macadamia nuts in a big barrel ready to be coated with dark chocolate, then in the next area was a man rolling balls of berry mixture ready to go to the next process of covering them with chocolate, which is all done by hand. The staff regularly change their task in the process of the chocolate making so as not to become too repetitive for them.

On leaving the factory area we were given a handful of dark chocolate almonds with the offer of tea or coffee and to browse around the shop to buy some goodies.

We all then went to the Unley Shopping Centre for lunch.

We tried this once before only to find it was closed for renovations. It is well & truly open again now so let’s give it a go.

It is of course situated within the Botanic Gardens on North Terrace so we will meet there about 11am . No need for names again, see you there.

September 2010 Page 13Essex 19261926 Essex owned by Alan & Janet Reddy

On 22~ March 1969 we purchased this car from Mr. J.H. Sharp for £20. Jack was a friend of my fathers and a drinking mate at the Great Eastern Hotel at Littlehampton. He was also the mechanic for Dads first car, a 1927 Chev. The Essex was housed at Woodside and the rego expired on 4th November 1968. Jack was a watch and clock repairer also a bicycle and auto mechanic.

In July 1993 with the help of some friends we started to dismantle the body from the chassis. I then decided to do a full restoration. I found the front section of the chassis bent and broken engine mountings. After talking to some local res-idents I was told that Jack was hit by the Melbourne express on the Nairne crossing. He had stopped too closed to the line and the running board of the guard’s van at the back of the train hit the car. Jack had to pay £70 to the Commonwealth railways for repairs to the running board.

He continued to drive the car in that condition and I drove it from Woodside to Littlehampton when I purchased it.

Restoration started in July 1993, November the chassis painted, December engine installed to chassis. May 94 body grit blasted and undercoated, March 95 new roof timbers made, October 96 body prepared for painting, No-vember 98 painting complete, June 99 upholstery completed. January 2000 first run. July 2001 first car run with AAA club.

In April 2Q02 we returned to the Great Eastern Hotel and this is true story told to me by John Nitschke — One day Jack and Ross Miller drove into the hotel too fast and tipped the Essex onto the passenger’s side. Jack got out and went for his weekend supply (6 ‘clock closing). He came out with some fellow drinkers, lifted the car onto its wheels with Ross still inside and drove off.

Old cars are very unforgiving. The first Bay to Bird-wood run proved very trying. When we fmally gathered speed and topped the first hill — BANG. No 6 big end disintegrated.

Engine reconditioning followed. The Federation Car Run to the West Coast in March 20Q3 proved tedious at 30 MPH counting fence posts. The other side of Kimba Janet decided to tidy the dash and put the 2 levers parallel which switched off the engine with a BANG and a cloud of black smoke. Before reaching Poochera another BANG a part on the timing shaft had broken.

The RAA trailered it to Ceduna and we trucked it home.

The last straw was running out of petrol in sight of home (up the hill). The fuel gauge is in the box at the back. Janet said ENOUGH — lift your game. We looked around for an upgrade — a 1972 Mercedes SL sports came into our possession.
