PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

Fr. Mike’s Homily at a Mass with Priests who were Ordained at St. Patrick’s Seminary, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland (Fr. Mike’s hometown)

PASTOR’S CORNER 1

Puccini the composer of such great operas as ‘La Bohe-me’ and ‘Madam Bu erfly’ was very ill toward the end of his life. Despite the protesta ons of his family and students he insisted on finishing his final opera ‘Turedot’. Then one night he was rushed to the hospital and died during sur-gery. A er the funeral his students decided to complete the opera. It opened in La Scala Milan and the conductor was his favorite student Arturo Toscanini. Everything was going well when Toscanini stopped everything and turned to the audience and said: ‘Thus far the Master wrote’ and a er a silence said: ‘But the disciples finished the work.’ We celebrate what Jesus the Master wrote. We have been called to con nue the mission of Christ with our strengths and weaknesses. As St. Paul said, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, my power is at it’s best in weakness.’ It is difficult for me to believe that is forty years since our class walked out of this Cathedral to the strains of ‘Go ye afar, go teach all na ons’. Isaiah in today’s first readings tell us, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” This holy space is my spiritual womb where I received my first communion, confirma on, and ordina on. Growing up in Thurles we had a remarkable group of priests, two of were memorable preachers, Fr. William Noonan and Fr. James Feehan. They had the support of many others; four congre-ga ons of nuns and over twenty priests between the par-ish, the college and the Pallo nes. Many of us are indebted to the Irish Chris an Brothers who were great educators. Even though we le here as priests we s ll are a work in progress. Florence Garrigan a wonderful eighty-year-old parishioner of mines mo o is ‘when you are through changing you are through.’ I feel blessed that I am a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It is s ll a young vibrant church with people from every corner of the world. Sacra-ments are celebrated in over seventy languages. During my first years we had get togethers for the recently ordained. (We used to refer to them as ‘the recall of the recent mod-els) At one of these mee ngs the presenter was an Oblate priest. He was asked the following ques on; ‘We are young and enthusias c about priesthood. When we look at some of the older priests and they are lonely, depressed and have given up. How do we stop ourselves from becoming like them.’ I’ll always remember his answer, ‘You have to have a vision of priesthood. During the journey of life you will be tempted to compromise that vision, Don’t!’

Part of the vision is to live a life of service. Our second reading is the call of the first deacons. It is a call to serve. Jesus tells us, ‘I have come not to be served, but to serve. The greatest among you is the one who serves the rest.’ As priests we are called not just to serve but to preach the word as St. Paul says, ‘In season and out of sea-son.’ Just like our first reading, ‘I am pu ng my words in your mouth to tear up and to knock down, to build up and to plant. I think people draw the priesthood out of us. It is their trust, challenge, confidence that they have in us forms us. The late English actor, Alec Guinness tells the story about a

me he played the role of a priest. He was walking back to his hotel and a young boy approached him, put his hand in his and cha ed with him all the way back to the town. Guinness said that he wanted to know more about priests with whom children were so secure. I know that this confi-dence has been tarnished by the few but the big picture is brighter and hopeful. Just like Simon, Andrew, James and John, the Lord has called us. Being a priest is a real privilege. We are part of people’s lives in all the special moments of the cycles of life. From birth and bap sms, first communions, confirma-

ons, RICA, weddings, anoin ng of the sick and funerals. Perhaps our best work is done quietly. In the confessional and appointments where a myriad of issues surface. Of course the Eucharist is central to who we are. In the sacris-ty of our church is a sign which reads, ‘Priest of God, say this Mass as if it was your first, your last, you only one.’ Like everyone else we are nourished by word and sacra-ment. We receive the Body of Christ so that we might be the Body of Christ for others. One of the remarkable as-pects of being a priest is that no ma er what one has expe-rienced there is always something new and so one finds oneself saying ‘they never told us about this in seminary.’ And so we gather these days to renew acquaintances, to share our stories, to celebrate the joy of being priest and hopefully renewing and recommi ng ourselves with hope, enthusiasm and vision. To sum up I will conclude with the words of Oscar Romero, on of my heroes. It helps now and then, to step back and take the long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,

it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our life me only a ny frac on of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said No prayer fully expresses our faith No pastoral visit brings wholeness No program accomplishes the church’s mission No set of goals and objec ves includes everything This is what we are about We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay founda ons that will need further development. We provide yeast that provides for beyond our capabili es We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of libera on in realizing that This enables us to do something and do it well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the mast builder and the worker. We are workers not master builders; ministers not messiahs We are prophets of a future not our own.

CONTACT GOVERNOR BROWN VETO PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL ABx2-15 Contact Governor Brown right away and urge him to veto this very dangerous bill that would legalize physician assisted suicide. History repeatedly shows this is the path to euthanasia. The disabled, elderly, and poor would be especially vulnerable when cost-ly treatment could be replaced with cheaper life-ending drugs. Under a veil of “compassion,” this bill destroys the medical credo of “Do No Harm.” ABx2-15 would help make health care ra oning and death panels a reality. Don’t delay! The Governor intends to decide before 09/29. For faster contact, follow the link below and complete the email form.
